Michael Hurley – The Tea Song Lyrics 4 years ago
Is this about drugs? Either way, it's a very good folk song.

The Killers – When You Were Young Lyrics 4 years ago
This might be a stretch, but I like to imagine that Flowers is sort of speaking to himself in this song. He starts with "you", but quickly switches to "we" and "I". It's interesting to note that he uses "you" pronouns when referring to the past, and "we" and "I" pronouns when referring to the present-time. That being said, I think it could very well be possible that this song isn't a song about a romantic relationship, but rather his relationship with himself. Or rather, his relationship with himself moving into adulthood as apposed to his relationship with who he was before it.

"You sit there in your heartache, waiting on some beautiful boy to save you from your old ways. You play forgiveness -- watch it now, here he comes! He doesn't look a think like Jesus, but talks like a gentleman -- like you imagined when you were young." When we were young, we were eager to grow up and become adults. We have to wait, but once it has happened, it's like it all happened in the blink-of-an-eye and you rarely end up being the person you envisioned yourself to be -- however, that isn't all a bad thing. I think Flowers cold possibly be trying to illustrate that message here. (Again, I know it's a stretch.)

"Can we climb this mountain? I don't know. Higher now than ever before..." Here, there is a hint of uncertainty -- which most of us experience when we feel like we've suddenly been thrown into adulthood and feel forced to leave our childhood behind.

"I know we can make it if we take it slow. Let's take it easy. Easy now, watch it go! We're burning down the highway skyline on the back of a hurricane that started turning when you were young." To me, these few lines are Flowers reassuring himself that he is only building off of who he used to be and not entirely leaving that person behind.

"Sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live when you were young." Here, he seems to be reminiscing about the past.

"They say, the devil's water -- it ain't so sweet. You don't have to drink right now, but you can dip your feet in every once and a little while." Like when he says, "We can make it if we take it slow,", I feel like he is reiterating the fact that it isn't easy, but there is no rush -- and that you can learn to understand, change, and accept change with time.

"He doesn't look a thing like Jesus -- but more than you'll ever know." I really like this line. It's as if he is trying to say that you probably won't end up much like the person you thought you would become when you were younger -- in terms of "moving out and being yourself and successfully being able to live on your own right off the bat"... But you will be closer to that person than you think you are when you are finally there.

Starfucker – Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is named after an old friend from high-school, which gives a little more insight on what the song itself is about: the inevitable fading of relationships between yourself and the people you used to know.

@[buggie92:28844] I noticed that a lot of folk-punk incorporates an extremely toaist mindset into their lyrics. I love it a lot.

In reference to the line where Sean (the lead singer of AJJ) sings, "I've got a bad case of the yellow flashlight blues.":

In 2012, in the band’s hometown of Phoenix, AZ, someone left a series of yellow flashlights around town which had been turned into explosives. When people picked up the flashlights and turned them on, they exploded.

It’s unclear whether Sean has the blues from the cruelty of a world in which people injure strangers with improvised explosives, or whether the world’s ugliness makes him feel like inflicting random pain himself.

I think this song is about someone realizing that they basically sold their soul to the one that they love, and coming to the fact that the one they love might not always be around in their life, but they themselves will be. So they need to be their for themselves.

Department of Eagles – Family Romance Lyrics 6 years ago
I feel like this song might be about a relationship between someone and their own family member, hence the title: Family Romance.

"There's every good reason / To let down your hair / It's nobody's business / And nobody cares." I think this is the singer talking to his relative, trying to convince her to partake in sexual interactions with him.

"Ask our neighbors," makes me think that maybe even the neighbors have heard them and/or seen them have sexual relations with each other. "I would know," sounds kind of like he knows that the neighbors know about their relationship, maybe because he's heard them talk about it and spread rumors?

"In spite of the weather / We can have a good time." I feel like this insinuates that the two are stuck at home together a lot, but despite that they can still 'have fun together' -- as in having deeper relations with each other.

"...You don't have to close your eyes / The way you used to do," makes me believe that at one point before, she knew it was wrong. Maybe she still does, but she's not as worried anymore? Just thoughts, I don't know.

Anyways that's just my interpretation. I really would like to know what this song is actually about. I really dig it. It's a chill tune.

The Shins – Fantasy Island Lyrics 6 years ago
I think this song is about someone reminiscing on his own childhood and how much he's seemed to have changed but realizing that deep down he's pretty much the same -- and he doesn't like that. He'd rather run away "to fantasy island" and pretend to be different to please those around him.

Bruce Springsteen – Hungry Heart Lyrics 7 years ago
I love Sexton Blake's version of this song.

I think this song means what is says: "Everybody's got a hungry heart." Everybody's heart continues to long for something -- to fill something. Another notable underlying "theme" of the song is that our desires may never be completely fulfilled -- our hearts will never cease to be hungry.

This song makes me imagine a man who falls in love with an intersex person and doesn't know how he feels about it. That's probably not what it means, but hey. It fits in my imagination.
