Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger Lyrics 7 years ago
goodbye stranger is a far more complex song than what it appears to be on the surface. it's not about one night stands (at least not directly), moreso personal struggles.

an important note is that there are chorus lyrics missing that add a lot of context to the song:

"Sweet devotion (Goodbye Mary), it's not for me (Goodbye Jane)
Just give me motion (Will we ever) and set me free (Meet again)
In the land and the ocean (Feel no sorrow), far away (Feel no shame)
it's the life I've chosen (Come tomorrow), every day (Feel no pain)

And now I'm leaving (Goodbye Mary), got to go (Goodbye Jane)
Hit the road (Will we ever), I say it once again (Meet again)
Yes I'm leaving (Feel no sorrow), got to go (Feel no shame)
Got to go (Come tomorrow), I'm sorry I must tell you (Feel no pain)

Goodbye Mary (Goodbye Mary), goodbye Jane (Goodbye Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever) meet again (Meet again)

I believe, yes, that I've got to get away"

to me, at least, the answer becomes obvious that this is a song about the person who wrote the song, actively trying to fix himself and essentially run from his past, notably of drug abuse and addiction.

In the song he is talking to multiple people, namely the comments they make about his lifestyle as a member of a band, and he responds to them explaining that, yes, his lifestyle is abnormal, he rejects religious salvation, but the way he lives his life and how he is always on the move, is how he's learned to cope with and escape from his problems.

It is a very optimistic song, but more the type of optimism someone feels as they're walking into a rehab centre after a 3 month heroin binge. a song of hope and personal salvation.
