The Birthday Massacre – Counterpane Lyrics 7 years ago
"Strange
Changes come with age
Some things disappear in a day
And some things slowly fade" Reflecting on how time goes on and nothing stays the same. Probably in a relationship?

"And you and I are like the ink staining all the other pages" Saying that their relationship has a history now. Written in ink suggests that there is a big story behind it, and 'staining' probably means that something went wrong and got messed up & smudged and cant be removed from their past and thoughts.

"We’re at the edge of the world again
A step back is a step forward" They're at the edge of breaking up which is a world ending to them because of how much they mean to each other. Stepping back from the situation could do nothing to help and they'll still end up over the edge, broken.

"Been here before when we were innocent
I saw the signs but I couldn’t find the words" They've been almost breaking up for a long time and now theyve ruined each other by getting to this point so much. She could see it coming but didn't know what to say or what to do about it.

"Now we’re stuck in a wasteland
Everyone in the dark adores you" Now theyre stuck in the aftermath of destroying each other. IDK what everyone in the dark adores you means. Maybe everyone who only sees his side thinks that he is right, and she feels looked over

"So much regret for things I never said
I should’ve left
I always meant to" She wishes she said something as soon as she could see it coming, especially because this bad situation has been around for so long

"Shame
There’s nobody to blame" (except themselves?) or maybe it was just bound to happen so there's no point in blaming either person

"People interlace by mistake sometimes
It hurts to walk away
But we’re just cheap toys, perpetually breaking" Sometimes people get too close when they probably weren't meant to and they'd rather stay in chaos than have to deal with the loss, so they keep breaking and breaking.

"We’re at the edge of the world again
Time will never heal the distance" Time won't stop the hurt that the've put on each other or get them back together

"Been here before when we were innocent
Building this modern prison for so long" Modern prison might mean that everyone these days are trapped and caged in by other people.

The Birthday Massacre – One Promise Lyrics 7 years ago
@[peril2pancakes:20118] I think it's about being deceived in a relationship, controlled and being fooled and used.

"you disappear without a sound, tie it up and tear it down" i think that means that the other person always does what they wish, control everything, ruin everything and just leave whenever they want.

"Making sure the door's locked, making sure the toys are put away" i think the writer is saying that they are always the one making sure everything's okay, and tidying up all they mess the other person leaves. Maybe locking the door to protect themselves?

Maybe the big deception in the chorus is not being properly loved and they are finally realising. The other person promised they loved them and would never leave or hurt them or whatever, but obviously theyve been breaking that promise over time.

They probably made that promise in december :P

"I never notice the way you look at me" is probably that they never noticed what the other person really thought of them.

The Birthday Massacre – Beyond Lyrics 7 years ago
These are the correct lyrics:

Out here at the edge of town I saw her
Alone on the water
I watched from the ridge as the trains passed under
My eyes full of wonder

Here I can see
Lakes of fire
As she called to me

And I could see
Beyond the ordinary
Lost to me
in every fading memory

Here under the bridge her eyes looked younger
An absence of color
The sound of her voice lost in thunder
My heart full of hunger

Here I can see
Lakes of fire
As she whispered to me

And I could see
Beyond the ordinary
Lost to me
In every fading memory

Out into the dark I stared
Out here at the edge of the world
I made a promise to never grow up and
Forget all the days here when I was so young

And I could see
Beyond the ordinary
Lost to me

And I could see
Beyond the ordinary
Lost to me
In every fading memory

The Birthday Massacre – Diaries Lyrics 7 years ago
Its about finding someone, and feeling like your life is coming together (lines that were broken are now the same).
And it feels like a dream because they love each other but at the same time she still thinks its going to end in destruction like everything does

I think the queen they sing about is a metaphor for something, maybe idealism.
and its about struggling, and all your pain and self destruction.

The Birthday Massacre – The Long Way Home Lyrics 7 years ago
I think its just talking about the long dark times we have to go to in order to feel safe and 'at home'. The band is just very smart with imagery and made it sound like a long journey through the cold and the snow, in the dark, because that is how it feels when we feel alone and desperate.

The Birthday Massacre – Nowhere Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this song is called nowhere because is about fantasy. They probably made this song with fantasy worlds in their head. And they called it Nowhere because no one else can get there but you.

Where are you?
I'm Nowhere (in my fantasy world)

It's about growing up, when you can no longer pretend that life is a game and all just fun. You can't escape responsibilities as you get older.

The second verse talks about anxieties of getting older.

Fits the dark love themes of their Nothing and Nowhere album.

Or maybe this time its talking about the dark side of yourself, that call for you to run away. The side of you that youre trying to run FROM.

The Birthday Massacre – The Other Side Lyrics 7 years ago
It sounds like shes singing from both her perspective and the perspective of the part of her that embraces her struggles and spirituality.

"Let me show you the way through the water,
you dont have to explain yourself,
turn our face to the stars,
i see you smiling".

Thats her spiritual/connected side telling her she can embrace her feelings and doesnt have to explain them or analyse them, they can just be. Her connected side must be more connected to nature, as chibi's actual self (or whichever TMB member wrote this) feels in touch with her spiritual side when she looking at the stars, feeling happier.

"in summer I drowned you
In winter I found you
As the world falls apart around me"

This is the 'real' chibi tlking, and It seems like Chibi wants to be more in touch with her spiritual/connected side in summer, but in winter she pushes it away, falls into depression maybe. Cold seasons often do that to people.

"The serpent is dreaming
I don't know this feeling
As we break through the other side"

Serpents represent evil usually, or sin/desires. So if the serpent is dreaming, it might mean its alseep and Chibi feels no desires, and wants to feel more pure and connected. She isnt familiar with feeling so connected and in synch with everything in her life. Breaking through the other side could mean death, or it could mean the other dimension, so breaking through and seeing the truth?

"Walking north I can hide for a season
Are you here in the dark with me?
With your voice in the stars
I hear you crying"

North in the northern hemisphere is colder, so walking north means winter climate, where she can hide in the darkness (in sorrow, anxiety, depression) for a season (all through winter). Shes asking her higher self if she is there with her through all the bad times. When she looks at the stars, she connects with her higher self more, she can hear her in the stars (maybe not literally but it could just be symbolism). The "I hear you crying" could mean that even her spiritual side is not at its best in winter, or maybe she means only herself is crying, and her spiritual side is watching over.

The Birthday Massacre – Trinity Lyrics 7 years ago
This song comes right after The Other Side. I think its like a story, theyve gotten to the other side, but they havent necessarily died. Thats why this song is called Trinity (the three persons of the Christian Godhead; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), because they're in trine now, they are complete, theyve embraced the universe, let go of their fears and past....

And that might be why this song is just an instrumental, no lyrics, cause it could lead on to the theme of their next album, and if this song had lyrics it wouldn't leave the right outro for this Superstition and intro for the next.

I think all of their albums have continued as a story of their life progress. Nothing and Nowhere seemed very fantasy orientated. Violet seemed to be a very rough, intimidating interpretation of society. Walking with Strangers seemed to focus on those themes mostly in the school grounds. Pins and Needles was a more 'grow up' theme, as was Hide and Seek, like they were maturing. And Superstition looked at a more spiritual theme. Doesnt it just make sense for the next album to lead on after Trinity?

The Birthday Massacre – Divide Lyrics 7 years ago
"Tides of glass, return to ash.
In the dawn, we follow the path away from the sun.
Shadows cast in wake of the past.
Reaching out, into the dark and out of the light."

Is this referring to the theme of moving on? Moving out of the light of day might mean something like.. not being ready to face the truth, being too comfortable in the past, in the dark? "Tides of glass, return to ash", might mean tides as in waves of emotion/change, going from something reflective and sharp (glass is able to cut you), burning away to ash, which is soft and harmless after the fire. Burning the past away?

"Crawling underneath our feet,
A river running black and green
From the heart of the gallows tree,
Where the future and our fate
Will bleed into the world below."

Is this black and green river the 'world below'?. Seems like a nice symbolism of the underworld. And the gallows tree is a tree where people are hanged isnt it? So that makes sense.

"Stone to bear the mountain stairs.
In the night, we dance with our devils and dine with the snakes.
The dead will stare in joy and despair
Rising up, away from the earth, into the clouds."

So they've gone away from the light of day, sheltering in the mountains where at night they relive the past again, dance with their devils and dine with the snakes, meaning they embrace the evil at night, and this is what theyre comfortable doing. The dead watch over them, with mixed feelings as they move on to the heavens.

"From the eye of the Graeae we stole,
A truth that we can’t unknow.
Spinning on the threads they sew
In a river of the tears that flow into the world below."

So instead of facing the truth, they stole it from the Graeae, that mythical creature. So then they accidently found another way into that river of the underworld? when they were trying to avoid it maybe? fate still lead them there. Spinning on the threads might mean, they are just puppets to the higher forces, like the Graeae, and cant actually control their life now that the stole the truth.

"Over, under, threads of fate.
Weaving patterns, soon and late.
As in this life, so in all things
The end result, the action brings."

So its talking about the choices we make leading us to our eventual fate, even if we avoid it, it will come sooner or later.

"The fates will divide in three.
A sight that we can’t unsee.
We’re falling to our hands and knees
As the past and the future bleed into the world below."

They can't control their lives anymore, the Divide in three means past, present, future. It's all come together, their past is gone, the present theyve reached and their fate/future is ahead. They fall to their hands and knees as they cant stand up against it anymore.

The Birthday Massacre – Superstition Lyrics 7 years ago
I remember Chibi and the band saying in an interview that this album was strongly linked to water imagery in meanings (emotions, drowning in them) and death. It's obvious in the song titles Rain, Oceania (water), The Other Side, Beyond (death) and all the others lyrically as well.

She also said that this song related to her experiences going to a psychiatrist/psychologist (can't remember which one) and that makes a lot of sense, as if she was recalling her thoughts and experiences, maybe with her spiritual insights/visions, only to be told it's basically all fake and an illusion by the psych.
It also relates to the water and death theme: "I walk out to the edge of the lake, Eyes following the water, As it washes my convictions away." meaning that shes readily immersing herself in these visions and feelings/thoughts, and the death part meaning that she wanted herself to be reborn into this new 'world' she'd found, but only to be told by the psych that it's wrong, that she's being superstitious, that its 'sedition', etc and not right, that she'd break herself apart (slow decomposition) if she lets herself become her visions.

The fire part.: " I wake up in the light of the fire, Eyes burning like the ashes In submission to the heat of desire." is probably referring to her 'rebirth' like a pheonix being burnt and rising from the ashes. She wants to be reborn into this new 'religion'/belief of hers, but the psych tells her to let it go and not to tell others about it because its all suspicious beliefs, and its a mental illness etc.

It sounds very much like my own experiences with hypomania, where I (and lots of others say this too) had big insights and revelation, only to be told that it was part of my illness and to not envelop myself in it because it was 'just mania'.

The Weeknd – Stargirl Interlude Lyrics 7 years ago
Somewhere described this as "Lana Del Rey imagines an erotic encounter" and it seems like exactly that.

They seem to be doing *something* on the kitchen bench, she's screaming, scratching the bench top, back arched, she couldn't stop, they were hitting 'it'.

What I dont get though is the "I shouldn't cry, but I love it..." is she crying out of pure ecstasy for the feeling? or is she crying because she's only imagining it, and wishes it were true. And even though she's crying cause its not real, she just loves imagining it?

But then I also don't get "I just wanna see you shine cause I know you are a stargirl". But that might just relate to the other songs on the album...

Lana Del Rey – You're Gonna Love Me Lyrics 8 years ago
One of my favourites of her early songs

About pretty much being obsessed with a guy while shes dangerous for him and will keep trying to be with him anyway

The "what God give me a brain for...... Etc" is highlighting her issues of having no control over her self and her life so she wants to control this guy instead (wanting to make him love her, but only wanting to love him just a little bit)

Lana Del Rey – I Can Fly Lyrics 8 years ago
She wrote this for Tim Burton's film Big Eyes, where a man marries a woman who loves him so much, only to use her art under his name to get famous.

So this song is her Ballard, it's freeing. Her realising what a lieing deceiving asswhole her husband was, and that she was manipulated, and she can actually be free and fine without him.

I haven't actually seen the film. God ive got to catch up

Lana Del Rey – Music to Watch Boys To Lyrics 8 years ago
Okay that babysitting nanny comment freaks me out........

I think this is about the days when girls hang out with the boys. Reminds me of middle school hahaha. Sounds like she's trying to be a player with the boys, while acting sweet, doing what they want, while at the same time being a 'destroyer', taking their hearts but not giving hers up completely? "its all a game to me anyway"

The blue ribbons on ice gives me this vibe that the whole 'girls and boys' interacting is like a dance

Lana Del Rey – 24 Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm convincing myself she wrote this for a James Bond film

Cause this one seems the least 'Lana like' from honeymoon.

Otherwise its talking about a lover who always leaves and comes back to her but she knows he's been seeing other people maybe and neglecting her while only seeing her a day at a time (24 hours ) and leaving again? "if you lay down with dogs you'll get fleas" "be careful of the company you keep/the ones you choose to leave"

And when she tries to get him to stay he's just "hard to reach, cold to touch"

Lana Del Rey – Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Nina Simone cover) Lyrics 8 years ago
Even though this isn't her song, I do see why she covered it. In interviews she's often reacting to criticism by explaining that she means only good, and doesn't want to mess around with people on purpose, so it could be a reaction to the media, trying to say she's just another flaws human, but more likely addressing loved ones that she's upset or hurt in the past, particularly in romantic relationships

Probably especially talking about her fears and anxieties she's mentioned affecting others

Lana Del Rey – Swan Song Lyrics 8 years ago
Did anyone notice that the intro faded vocals are from High By the Beach?!!!!!

I never thought this was a suicide pact song, I think it's more likely her literally wondering whether being famous is worth it, and that she wants to just dissappear with her lover to be free from the media hahah (i kinda picture the house from HBTB too here, great place to retire to?)

Lana Del Rey – Religion Lyrics 8 years ago
The second line is "let sleeping dogs lay"

I think it's about diving into a new relationship and they automatically become your whole life, they're the only person you spend time with and you do everything with them. It kinda sounds dangerous but addictive.

Or maybe it's an old relationship, but same principle

And the "it never was about the party, drugs, money, clubs, for you there's only love" might mean that he is putting all his effort and time into her too FOR ONCE YAY

Lana Del Rey – Honeymoon Lyrics 8 years ago
Lana has already said that Honeymoon is more fantasy than an actual story of hers.

I think it's her dreaming of marrying someone who is damaged like her, who understands her like no one else and will go and be wild with her.

There's elements of a dark, perhaps violent (mentally or emotionally, probably not physically ) relationship, but it's so enticing and wild and a dream that it seems perfect

submissions
Lana Del Rey – Freak Lyrics 8 years ago
I have no idea where "when you're on ice" came from.....

But I think this is about feeling so passionately about someone, just completely idolising the time you spend with them and wanting them to join you to be crazy and wild and passionate, but also being calmer and mentally connected (hence the whole chorus)

P.s. I also think it's "your halo's full of fire"

Lana Del Rey – God Knows I Tried Lyrics 8 years ago
The guitar bit at the intro reminded me of the intro of "kinda outta luck". I thought this song might have been about the struggles she faced being an alcoholic, and personal things she's dealt with from a very young age, maybe why she chose a "lizzy grant era" vibe from this song, idk.

We know she's Christian so this song must be like the story of her life struggles, leading up to now - not knowing what to do now that she's so famous.

It's very pleading and appologetic, like she's scared of failure and scared of not finding peace after so long, even though she can be happy a lot - "god gave me life, so let there be light"
It's like she's ready for inner pesce

Lana Del Rey – Terrence Loves You Lyrics 8 years ago
"and I still get trashed, when I hear your tunes" - while it could be Bowie, Barrie is also a muscian and she took that breakup really hard :/

Plus she said it was her favourite song on Honeymoon, and since it was a real event that happened to her, it would be easy to see why.

She also has said she didn't want the relationship to end so that explains the aching and longing of the Bowie lyrics

Lana Del Rey – The Blackest Day Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this is about her break up with Barry Oneil

Recently news came out that Lana broke up with him in an interview but it was really all just mistaken words- "i don't really wanna break up we got it going on, it's what you gathered from my talk but you were wrong"

Previously Lana had said that she destroyed that relationship because of her insecurities and anxiety, but after the interview news came out Barry said he thought he was also not doing her any good because of his depression and self esteem, etc. "you're not simple, it's trigonometry" - Lana saying that he isn't simple and had his own issues too

"holding your hand listen to our song" -HELLO THEY SANG SUMMER WINE TOGETHER

everyone knows Lana was most upset after that breakup so this song makes 100% sense to the scenario. I feel really bad for them :/
"in on my own again" x 4
That end part literally makes my throat go lumpy every time

Lana Del Rey – Angels Forever (Forever Angels) Lyrics 8 years ago
used to think this was about her and her lover just cruising through life, because I think a lot of Ride while listening to this, as if it was a sequel- the story of one of the men she was with in the music video or something

But now I'm starting to think she's singing about her idols. She's talked a lot about her famous influences and a lot of them are rock gods, like guns and roses, nirvana, damn I can't even name any others that come to mind right now. But I think in this song she is idolising them

"Rock and roll guardians, heavy metal lions, they will never understand the kind of people you or I am'
Is she implying that she understands the pain and criticism they (kurt cobain especially?) Went through, being famous, and that they live on even after death (angels forever)
