The Beatles – You Can't Do That Lyrics 5 years ago
Haha, 2world, I love your premise! Why not. I 've always just assumed it's that side of Lennon that I actually really admire. That honest side. If anybody can put themselves out there and be vulnerable in song it is John Lennon. Think 'Help', 'I'm A Loser', 'Yer Blues', 'Don't Let Me Down' etc. I love that about him.

In this song he's showing typical male entitlement anger, and he knows it. I think it's interesting that in the bridge he makes his main point by telling us that it's not so much about him being hurt by her giving attention to other guys but by how people will laugh at him once they find out. It's something different than him just being a jealous guy. It's him facing public humiliation. Is that a real thorn in John's side or is he making a point to other men who would react this way at what might be behind their anger in similar situations.

In any case, the music in this song equals the tenor of the lyrics. The opening guitar lick is one of his best and his voice drives the song relentlessly thrusting on the downbeat in an angry, dirty way. The rhythm guitar sound is nasty, too, and syncopates in a raunchy accompaniment to his vocals. One unique, perfect song from the nearly perfect album, 'A Hard Day's Night', made at the pinnacle of their pure rock song/ballade writing.

Elton John – Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me Lyrics 8 years ago
@[coolgreycat:8914] Nice interpretation, but the words belong to Bernie Taupin, the lyricist for all of Elton's songs.

The Beatles – Good Night Lyrics 8 years ago
The lyrics are simple and innocent of any subtext that says it's anything but a lullaby.

Looking further, it is the Beatles consoling the listeners, after the chaos and oblivion of Revolution 9, and the cultural mayhem it suggests (of the whole wildness of the White Album, really), with this overtly hopeful (and rather mawkish) gesture that things are indeed, at least temporarily, just peachy. For all of you who are upset about what just happened, here you go, take it easy, it's all good! It's almost cynical about what they predict will be the fallout of putting something like Revolution 9 on a Beatles record. I think part of them is laughing at a lot of the listener base that they know are a little less open to new musical and artistic concepts.

Personally, I have always experienced this piece in an additional way. The combination of the overtly sentimental arrangement and Ringo's dirgelike voice make for something that crosses over into creepy territory and makes me think not just of death, but of suicide. Possibly even a suicide pact! I know this is just my personal stretch on a meaning. I'm waiting, however, for someone to use this song in film to backdrop effectively and eerily some scene of suicide or death.

Cool! I don't know if all those references are accurate. But I never realized it could be about the band members before and will listen to this differently from now on.
