Twenty One Pilots – Not Today Lyrics 7 years ago
This song starts with the main character, Tyler, feelings depressed and not wanting to leave his house. He's a shut in with curtains closed and refuses to face his demons, Blurryface.
"I don't know why
I just feel I'm better off
Staying in the same room I was born in"

He has someone close to him, either a personal friend or possibly God, who refuses to let him wallow in his self loathing. He comes in and tears down the curtains and forces him to fight, saying "not today" as in, you're not giving in today. You need to fight this. The main character does not appreciate this at first, saying his friend doesn't see his side.
"You are out of my mind, ooh
You aren't seeing my side, ooh
You waste all this time trying to get to me
But you are out of my mind"
"Heard you say
Not today
Tore the curtains down
Windows open, now make a sound"

He finally gets so fed up with the person close to his that he lashes out at him.
"Oh, don't you test me, no
Just because I play the piano
Doesn't mean not
I'm not willing to take you down"

This outburst leads him to see how he needs to change. He's attacking the person that cares about him and he now realizes that he may be the one out of line.
"I'm, I'm out of my mind, ooh
I'm, I'm not seeing things right, ooh
I waste all this time trying to run from you
But I'm, I'm out of my mind"

The music at this point gets simple and drawn back as he turns on Blurryface. His original statements towards his friend are now directed at his demons. The music really adds significance to this line, thus suggesting a completely different meaning from the first time he said it.
"You are out of my mind
You aren't seeing my side
You waste all of this time trying to get to me
But you are out of my mind"

This is when the music gets really upbeat and happy, with the horns taking a more prominent role. This suggests a celebration of his victory over Blurryface. Although this victory is possibly temporary and short lived, it is still a victory and something to celebrate. So now when his friend says "Not today", it is Tyler now tearing the curtains down, throwing the windows open, and making noise in celebration.
"Heard you say
Not today
Tore the curtains down
Windows open, now make a sound"

I love how they use the music to change the meaning of lyrics through the process of this song. Makes the ending feel so satisfying and triumphant.

Twenty One Pilots – Car Radio Lyrics 7 years ago
As someone who has gone through and overcome depression, this song is incredibly powerful to me.

Music was always my escape. My thoughts were terrifying when left to their own path, so I needed something to funnel or focus them. Music was that focus. This was when I was in middle school, 2003-2006, so most of what I listened to was Relient K, Switchfoot, and Thousand Foot Krutch. I cannot explain how vital those bands were to me overcoming that struggle.

But there were days were I couldn't listen to music. Say I forgot to charge my ipod, or I forgot my headphones. I would get my ipod taken away from me by teachers constantly for listening in class. Those days when I didn't have that distraction were brutal. My parents could literally tell what days I didn't have music based on what mood I was in after school.

This is how I relate to this song. I obviously couldn't drive back then, but sitting in a car alone with my thoughts during that time would have been terrible. That's what I feel like this song is conveying. Yeah it sucks to get your radio stolen but this is way deeper than that. It's the void that is left when you are alone in silence.

Twenty One Pilots – A Car, a Torch, a Death Lyrics 7 years ago
To understand this song it takes a little understanding of Christian theology. Tyler says he understands why God died. In Christian theology Jesus, who is also God, died to save us from sin.

In this song the main character is worried about a woman he cares about.
"I begin to envy the headlights driving south
I want to crack the door so I can just fall out
But then I remember when you packed my car
You reached in the back and buckled up your heart"

It hurts her when he's gone and her personal struggles grow worse.
"And when my car was far out of sight
He crept in her room and stayed there for the night"

He cares for her so much that he would sacrifice himself to heal her hurts. This is why he knows why God died. He understands the pain of watching someone you care about suffer and therefore understands sacrificing for them.
"And then I said, I'll take the grave, please, just send them all my way"

Twenty One Pilots – Fairly Local Lyrics 7 years ago
It seems to me like the two verses are two different sides of his (or anyone's) mind. Everyone does things we know are wrong. Sometimes we don't even care that they are wrong. Yet overall we generally try and do good with our lives. The two verses of this song are almost exact inverses of each other. It seems like this is done to highlight the contradiction in our minds between what want to do and what we know is right and the struggle that goes on internally over it.

I see this song from a less religious standpoint. I've always seen the social implications of the song with real people, although I know Joseph usually has religious themes in his song.

I see this more as him feeling alone and slightly outcast and seeing someone else that seems to be in a similar situation and he's intrigued by this and is trying to get to know that person. The visual I get in the beginning of the song is being alone in a crowd and feeling a connection to another person that is obviously feeling the same way.
