Death Cab for Cutie – Crooked Teeth Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Littlewanderer:40672] - Disdain for a certain city --> I wonder if it was Los Angeles. I share Ben\'s disdain for that place. He\'s from the beautiful green Northwest and didn\'t like living in the brown hellhole known as LA.

Squeeze – Pulling Mussels (From The Shell) Lyrics 3 years ago
@[RDTX14:36474] - Lol! You couldn't be more wrong. Of course this is about a beach vacation -- and it's also about early sexual encounters on or near the beach. It's chock full of innuendo and double entendres that are more than obvious.

@[stoolhardy:36473] - I know this is a very old comment, but I always interpreted the lyrics to be that he feels like William Tell (who was known for being an excellent marksman) because he hit the mark by making his partner (Maid Marion) come.

Doves – The Cedar Room Lyrics 3 years ago
I used to live in a place that had a large closet entirely lined in cedar wood. It was intended to preserve clothing by keeping them safe from moths (it was built in the days when people wore a lot of wool). He's recognizing that he will soon be just a memory to her that she'll kept stored away.

The Psychedelic Furs – Tiny Hands Lyrics 3 years ago
I'm guessing this is about Donald "Tiny Hands" Trump, the worse president in the history of the United States, who took us down the wrong road (understatement of the century). My fellow Americans: Vote that evil, destructive mf'er out in November 2020!

Big Thief – Cattails Lyrics 3 years ago
And I imagine this woman's version of "going to Heaven" after she dies is returning to the Great Lakes area (of her youth?) where the cattails sway with the lonesome loon.

Big Thief – Cattails Lyrics 3 years ago
This is a beautiful, haunting, poignant song. I think Caroline is a relative (or a friend?) of the singer. She is old and likely to die soon -- "leaving here soon and you know where."

Vampire Weekend – Harmony Hall Lyrics 4 years ago
@[WhistleBlower:32744] - Lol!!!! Q-anon & Pizza Gate -- give me a break. That's conspiracy idiocacy for absolute morons who will believe any propaganda pushed by the extremist loony right.

Film School – Two Kinds Lyrics 5 years ago
My take: The love he and his significant other "used to know" was passionate, romantic love. That has fizzled into platonic love, and he is beginning to understand that his S.O. is ready to take a break, a "time out." He's saying he's done with the whole thing unless she shows fights to rekindle their romantic relationship -- "unless you contest."

Vampire Weekend – Harmony Hall Lyrics 5 years ago
Great song. I just wanted to point out that Columbia University in NYC has a student residence called Harmony Hall.

@[unknownONE:28407] - I don't think so. PTM rejects religion. See my comment above.

Portugal. The Man – Live in the Moment Lyrics 5 years ago
Portugal. The Man is not religious. They don't believe in the Bible and other nonsensical mythology, thus the lines:

When your family
Swinging from the branches of a tree
God only knows
We don't need ghost stories
We are primates who evolved (swinging from the branches), not creatures made by some fictional deity. The Jesus myth is also dissed: "We don't need ghost stories."

PTM recognizes the harm done by idiotic patriarchal monotheisms like Christianity, and they're declaring that they don't buy it. This theme is seen in other songs and lyrics, such as when they sing:
Don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus
To roll with us
The only rule we need is never
Giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us.

This song is clearly another rejection of religion -- we've all got much better things to do on Sunday morning than listen to lies and fiction from moronic preachers. Amen! (Pun intended.)

Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell Lyrics 6 years ago
God this song is heartwrenching. Does anyone know if Carrie really did break Sufjan's arm?

Sufjan Stevens – The Only Thing Lyrics 6 years ago
I appreciate the reference to the sea lion caves (which are near Florence, Oregon). I'm guessing Carrie and Lowell took Sufjan and his siblings to see them during the summers they spent with them in Eugene. That is something you would definitely remember from your childhood, a true "wonder" that makes life worth living.

Sufjan Stevens – Death With Dignity Lyrics 6 years ago
Because this album is Oregon-related, I can't help but think that the mention of the chimney swift might be inspired by the famous mass swarming of thousands of vaux swifts on September nights at Chapman Elementary School in Portland. They swoop around in the air and then suddenly all fly down the giant chimney to nest for the night.

Sufjan Stevens – Fourth of July Lyrics 6 years ago
I think he is comparing the spread of the Tillamook burn (a historically destructive wildfire in Oregon, where his mother lived) to the spread of her cancer (the spread of evil).

The Avett Brothers – Down with the Shine Lyrics 6 years ago
To me, "down with the shine" is another way of saying "boo to glitzy, superficial things." If you get caught up in materialism and the superficial beauty of pretty-but-shallow people and objects you'll poison your mind and get taken for a ride that you'll regret. It's a fool's errand, chasing the fountain of youth and never-aging new shiny things. Instead, embrace aging, the timeless things in life, love, and family.

Interpol – Say Hello to the Angels Lyrics 9 years ago
"Say hello to the angels" -- a comment on death, perhaps, but an orgasm is also called "the little death." So perhaps the climax of the song is ... a climax. Or two.

Interpol – PDA Lyrics 9 years ago
I always imagined the "sleep tight/grim rite/we have 200 couches" line taking place at a funeral home where someone is pointing out all the types of coffins available. Maybe the narrator is envisioning his ex as dead.
