Tokyo Police Club – Hands Reversed Lyrics

In the song meanings commentary for Bambi, there's the interpretation that the "kite" in that song refers to the singer's mother's battle with alcoholism... the colorful kite (alcohol) is the only bright thing in a black and white world. The theme seems to continue in this song.
"You've got to come into the kitchen for a crime"-- alcohol is usually kept in the fridge or cabinet
"You've got to shoot me up and tie me to the kite"-- the mother is holding the singer hostage emotionally with her alcoholism
"The breakfast of champions is a hedonistic hell"-- The mom starts drinking first thing in the morning and apparently doesn't care about anything but her own pleasure
"You can buy it in cans, tin cans"-- you can buy beer in cans
"I think you've got your hands reversed"-- the singer thinks the mom's logic for defending her choices is completely backwards
"Watching your weekends and holidays combine, etc"-- this set of lyrics talks about the effects of alcohol on one's memory and the poor decisions the mother makes like forgetting to buy actual souvenirs when she went to the beach.
"But when you feel like a million, I feel like a grand"-- when the mother feels great (i.e. drunk), the singer feels crappy. |

To the person questioning about the K-Ci and Jojo line, they're a pair of hip hop artists who are brothers. Sonny and Cher were a pair of lovers back in the 60s. Saying "You're Tina but I'm not Ike" is a reference to Tina and Ike Turner, which was a well documented abusive relationship where Tina Turner was beaten by her husband Ike. He's saying they're like salt and pepper couple-wise, like Tina and Ike... if Ike didn't beat Tina. |

Tokyo Police Club – Breakneck Speed Lyrics

I think this song is about a guy and a girl who grow up together and try to maintain their friendship past puberty even though society says that they should be sexually attracted to each other and want to date. The singer points out that their voices used to sound the same (i.e. they probably both had high pitched kid voices before puberty) but now they "just translate", meaning that since puberty and growing up, everything has either romantic or sexual implications that they have to avoid for things to not be awkward. I don't think the line about being amazed at getting out alive has anything to do with trauma; rather, it's a humorous musing about how rough puberty is for everyone. "Forest fires underneath your bed" sounds like a reference to the sexual awakening that happens when you grow up and realize that boys don't have cooties anymore. |

Gomez – Silence Lyrics

It seems like a song about being really bored with one's surroundings. Like being trapped at a parent's house for the weekend and being forced to hold your tongue and be very proper, and feeling utterly bored by it all. |

Alex Winston – Locomotive Lyrics

It seems like a really simple song to me. The girl is being bombarded by a guy's advances and she really doesn't feel a particular connection to him, or even really care about him at all. She refers to him as a locomotive because he's forcing things to move quickly, even though he'd probably get a lot farther with her if he'd just slow down and take the time to get to know her. |

Noel Gallagher – If I Had A Gun Lyrics

This song to me is about finally meeting a person you have an impossibly deep connection with, and realizing that you'd actually do anything for them. It's like being in a crowded room, but being around that person makes all of the surrounding chaos seem like white noise. It's the sort of love where if something horrible happened to the other person, even if they dumped you or broke your heart, you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if they were suffering somehow.
I really love this song compared to other love songs because it feels more realistic. It's not about how love is perfect and nothing bad will ever happen in a relationship because two people are in perfect flawless love. It's more like learning to become a better person because the person you're with deserves the best. |

Daughter – Human Lyrics

I feel like this song is written about being in the midst of a depression, where you really only feel like a bare animal and not a human capable of processing thoughts and emotions. So instead of enjoying life and the full spectrum of human emotion, the singer feels numb and robotic. It also feels like the singer is going through a personal awakening because of a recent breakup, and she's learning more about herself and the way her emotions affect her, possibly questioning her own humanity in the midst of it all. |

The Avett Brothers – Die Then Grow Lyrics

This song seems to be about a man who's hopelessly in love with a woman (possibly much younger than him) who's very immature and selfish, like a child. He even points out that the people who "ask for love" and "demand some respect" come "last in line for what they expect", which refers to the singer's relationships with his friends and family deteriorating due to his relationship with Anita. He doesn't want to have to leave her, but he knows in his heart that she would rather die than be forced to change her ways.
Also, it seems like the "spring of talent" is a reference to having success with his band, which he uses as an excuse to leave her without breaking her heart too much. He insists that he was born to follow her, but it's more like a reassurance to her that he still cares for her rather than the actual truth. "Don't let romance and beating hearts change what we came to do" is a statement to her, telling her not to guilt trip him into staying with her instead of following his dreams with his band. |

Bright Eyes – Approximate Sunlight Lyrics

I've seen Youtube comments state that the woman in the background is actually crying hysterically about something (it sounds like people watching her from a tower above). With that in mind, this song seems like it's actually about drug cartels acting as virtual dictatorships in certain Latin American countries while places like the US have basically turned a blind eye toward it for their own pointless pleasures and problems. The song doesn't seem like it's from Conor's point of view, but from the US as a whole-- mostly embittered and indifferent toward the girl at the quincenera (which sounds like a metaphor for whatever country he's talking about). |

East Hundred – Slow Burning Crimes Lyrics

This song seems like it's a narrative in the singer's head about a relationship she can't stop thinking about while she's out on tour with the band. The lyrics "we walk through rivers of fire/high tides try to kill off desire" implies that the relationship is constantly tested, while "slow burning crimes keep us up through the night" feels like reminiscing about spending the intimate middle hours of the night with someone important. It sounds like the relationship is constantly tested because the other person doesn't trust her while she's away on tour, but she's always thinking about him/her and missing them while she's gone. |

Eisley – Ambulance Lyrics

This song is about that really horrible, crushing feeling you get when someone you never thought was going to leave you ends up dumping you. You actually feel briefly paralyzed by emotion, which is what I believe the lyrics are hinting at-- the feeling of being so heartbroken your heart literally aches in your chest, like some sort of sick heart attack. The singer knows that she's actually going to be okay eventually, but for right now, it seems so horrific that she's removed herself from her own mind.
The lyrics go on to describe a typical breakup (having to move out and pick up your things from the parking lot, still feeling attached to the other person but knowing that in time they'll stop looking at you with adoration), but also have an existential hint to them-- "is it really safe to say that we were made this way, made to brave the pain?". The singer is questioning whether human beings were meant to endure these kinds of emotions, or if they were meant to love each other at all. Even though the phrase "like a rubbernecker's gaze" is meant to be used as a simile, I feel as though it's also a literal statement about how when people break up, everyone seems to stop and stare at the spectacle.
The song is really powerful and in my honest opinion, accurately describes the feeling of losing someone who's given up on your relationship. |

Eisley – Mr. Moon Lyrics
|
I recall reading somewhere that this song was written specifically with all of the Dupree sister's relationships at the time in mind. One was getting divorced, one had an engagement called off, and I believe the other had just been dumped.
That being said, this song seems to be a reflection on all the sad things that seemed to happen all at once. At night, when people have time to think about what's going on their lives, that's when the singer is reminded of the moon and how it's shining down on her life without the other person around to hurt her. At some point, she must have gotten a (possibly drunken) phone call from her ex trying to get back together, and instead of taking him up on the opportunity, she's inspired by how strong her sisters have been and turns him away.
It sounds like a really sad, upsetting song, but it's more like a song of sisterly love and sticking together through the hard times. |

I agree with xxohitislove, this song seems like a thinly veiled potshot at the Farro brothers, especially since immediately after leaving, they went on the offensive and tried to "spill their guts" about how bad working with Hayley Williams was. |

Paramore – Interlude: I'm Not Angry Anymore Lyrics
| 9 years ago

It seems like it's a song about forcing yourself to grow up and not be upset with someone (especially someone you have to be or work around, no matter how hard you try to avoid them). But at the end of the day, you probably still secretly hate what they did and think about it a lot. On the outside, you're really charming and bubbly, but sometimes it still shows that you're angry. |

Paramore – Future Lyrics

I think this is a song directed towards people who are feeling lost or maybe even suicidal. The instrumentals in this song add to the feeling. It seems like Hayley is directly addressing you, personally. Like she's giving you advice when you're in the middle of a crisis. She's telling you to stop thinking about all the bad things that happened in the past, and all the bad things that are happening right now, and to just focus on the future. I love that the song has a crashing, monumental buildup. It seems symbolic of letting go of all the horrible things that might have happened before in someone's life. |

Mother Mother – Bit By Bit Lyrics

The song is about being so disillusioned with society that you just want to say "fuck it" and run away to somewhere remote where nobody else can find you. "Out in the sticks" is a term used to refer to a place that's out in the middle of nowhere. The singers are saying they want to bundle up all their bags on a stick, like old timey hobos, and just bail. |

Paramore – Ain't It Fun Lyrics

This song is about that period in your 20s where some people grow up and flourish, and then some people stay stuck in high school forever. And the ones who end up stuck are usually the ones who whine about how hard life is even though they've had the same opportunities as the rest of us. Basically, the song is saying "life is hard, get over it" |

St. Vincent – Human Racing Lyrics

The song seems to be about the general fast paced lifestyle most people lead these days. It feels like a longing to connect with other people, while other people seem wrapped up in whatever trivial day to day things that prevent them from stopping to enjoy the small things in life. |

St. Vincent – The Bed Lyrics

It seems like the children could be hiding under the bed with their dad's gun while their dad is in the living room beating their mother. They want to scare away the "monsters" (probably a reference to the scary sounds of yelling, screaming, chaos that don't sound human). |

St. Vincent – Prince Johnny Lyrics

I think this song is about a fake, pretentious hipster guy that the singer hangs around, hoping that he actually cares about her or their relationship. Even though she knows that someone else will treat her better, she can't help but want to be around him anyway. The song also seems to hint that this "Johnny" guy is only really interesting after he does cocaine ('praying" in bathroom stalls to make him a "real boy" sounds like a thinly veiled metaphor for snorting cocaine off of a toilet seat, in the bathroom of a club or maybe a bar). Or else he's only fun to be around when he's drinking ("praying" could also be throwing up after having too much alcohol).
Johnny and all of his friends feel "above" everyone else because they're rich, famous artsy types who think they can see beauty in ways that other people can't (hence, being "sons of somebody"-- they see themselves as more important than anyone else). In actuality, they're just a bunch of boring snobs who get high and sleep around with each other. From the outside looking in, it's probably a romantic, bohemian lifestyle, but now that the singer hangs around these people, she sees that other people are more genuine and will treat her better.
Despite all of her observations about how everyone in her circle of friends (particularly "prince" Johnny, the leader of the pack) are just fake and disappointing, at the end of the song, she finds herself joining in "prayer" with the rest of them. It's an admission that even though she could do better, she still wants to feel like royalty with the rest of them. It's actually a very ironic, self-aware song about true friendship in young adulthood. |
