Warpaint – Elephants Lyrics 9 years ago
@[DannyG505:1028] 'Mystical' anarchists (accused thieves waiting in darkness) singing to conservatives (those that are 'not there', elephant symbol of the US GOP). A work of large-scale attempted hypnotism? Whether is that - to enable more of the thievery they admit to being accused of, or truly to keep from danger and 'catch' their elephants from falling? They likely do not actually know, themselves, but have a belief, which verges on mysticism. One may have to rely on personal experience to know.

Pavement – Shady Lane Lyrics 9 years ago
@[summerbabe:474] great interpretation, I wouldn't have come up with such a linking story, it sounds so plausible I can believe it. I always took the lines more as vaguely connected epigrams about the drolleries of suburbian middle class life in the nineties. You've actually made this plausibly coherent. I want you to be my interpreter to the pavement catalogue now !!

Katatonia – The Parting Lyrics 9 years ago
@[EternalTearsOfSorrow:334] i like what you wrote, but I think it's more complex than that. Why would this other person, stepping into darkness, trust someone who never trusted them? He is saying that he's trustworthy, but this other person isn't. However, that leaves the well deserved question as to why he would bother guiding this person forward; why do they 'have to walk along this wire'? Perhaps he sees something in them that can be developed, or perhaps must be developed from his point of view. Nonetheless, the lyrics leave so many questions unanswered that the listener can barely know the story, or who to trust---nonetheless it is clearly urgent, intriguing, and a brilliant song.

Local Natives – Sticky Thread Lyrics 9 years ago
@[pdxwastrel:236] you definitely wrote the best explanation, short of the other guy who had inside info from the author at a show. I just wanted to add that, regardless of what the author said, I read this poem and feel it could be applied to any kind of relationship - friends, colleagues, unspecified.

Also, you seemed confused about the water changing color, but I think it's got a clear meaning. When water is still and undisturbed, it turns putrid. If you're out in nature, you don't drink water that has been sitting in one place. It tastes awful and makes an excellent home for bacteria and other nasties. It's also a great metaphor for how, if you don't allow things to stir up your relationships, even conflict, they can grow stale and disgusting, even poisonous, over time. "This work is so hard," indeed. local natives, thank you for writing this. It helped me appreciate some of the painful conflict in my life. It didn't make it not painful, but maybe it made it bearable for at least another day. So, in a sense, I owe at least a day of my life to this song, maybe many more.
