Weezer – Glorious Day Lyrics | 4 months ago |
At first I feel like this is a really positive song, but something about this verse makes me feel like this is not a positive song, but I can’t put my finger on it: Glorious children on my mind Glorious wastings of my time Glorious plans we make up Forcing things in line The words and phrases “wasting”, “make up”, and “forcing” aren’t positive. What am I missing? Has he ever talked about this song? |

Hmm, I always thought the lyrics were “there’s no such thing as sweet as your sting”. |
Paul McCartney – New Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Wow, a beautiful song that reminds me of “In My Life”. The song celebrates the way the person he loves changed his life, changed his view of the world, changed his view of himself. Definitely a later-in-years, looking-back, thank-you song to a person he loves. The phrase “when we were new” really brings me back to the amazing times when you’ve newly fallen in love, and the apple of your eye can do no wrong, and you are the happiest you can be. My one question is why “Don’t look at me”? What is he ashamed of or embarrassed about? Perhaps he’s a little embarrassed because he’s getting emotional looking back at that wonderful time of his life when he and this person shared this happiness. It makes me tear up a bit looking back on those times in my life. This is a real gem in McCartney’s 21st Century catalogue. |
Toad the Wet Sprocket – Is It For Me? Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I don’t understand all the interpretations that it’a whore house. Did someone in the band say that? There’s really no reference to that that I see. When you were a teenager, didn’t you ever hear a rumor of a house somewhere around you being haunted? I can picture a number of houses I heard were haunted. Once we heard of a ghost that appeared on some old dirt road so about four cars of kids all drove out there. We drank a beer or two and some people thought they saw something, some didn’t. Driving back, we got pulled over by a cop, who told us there was no ghost, and not to drive out there any more. We were polite and drove away, but with the cop right behind us, my dumb friend threw a paper cup out the window, and he immediately pulled us over and this time when he approached the car, he could smell the alcohol, and we all got charged with underage drinking. This song always reminds me of that night. And I think that’s really what this song is about. It’s a coming-of-age moment that the narrator will never forget. They sneak out, they go to a haunted house, there’s a big accident where some gets really hurt because they were being irresponsible, and in the middle of all of it, they witnessed this beautiful sunrise. Either the narrator knew at the moment it happened, or is realizing in retrospect, that it was one of those moments where you grow up, where you lose a little innocence, where your path to adulthood becomes a little clearer to you. And that’s what he sees through a figurative door: the future, growing up, needing to make better decisions. And he’s not sure if he wants to grow up: Is it for him? This is my favorite Toad song because the imagery and the storytelling really paints a picture, and the music matches the dream-like tale perfectly! They really are one of the most underappreciated bands ever. |

@[ChiTownHustler:29286] I’m sure that’s a shot at The Eagles — who deserve shots — but I kind of don’t get it. Can someone explain how this is an insult to them? Is it just that The Eagles were mainstream and everywhere at the time, so your boring neighbors probably like them? Is that it? |

@[Rick103617:28570] Thanks! I never saw that before. I assumed that it meant straight A’s but had no confirmation. |
The Flaming Lips – Suddenly Everything Has Changed Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I think the meaning is clearly described in the subtitle, but I always saw it as something kind of opposite of that until I read that. It reminded me of when something awful happens, like the death of a loved one, or a particularly traumatic break-up. Just as you are moving on and getting back to the status quo - a la mundane tasks - all of a sudden the full weight of what happened ca hit you like a freight train. Then you find yourself reliving that terrible experience in your mind all over again. Suddenly you feel the entire weight of what happened. You go through it, get back on your feet, and then the cycle starts over again. But either way, it's the enormity of a life-change hitting you as soon as you let your guard down. |
Ice Cube – A Bird In The Hand Lyrics | 7 years ago |
OK, a question, and a couple corrections. 1.) Does anyone know what Cube is referencing by "when I was in school I got the A-E-E"? I've tried to figure this out for years but can't make heads or tails of it... 2.) It's "There's no SC for this youngster" as in USC, University of Southern California -- not "SE" as above. 3.) "what the hell, crack will sell" NOT "cracker sell". Although, Hell Cracker does seem like a great Alt-Country band name. :-) 4.) Def one of Cube's most concise, and well-developed sets of lyrics in his immense socially-conscious rap library. My favorite Ice Cube song ever. Brilliant illustration of the position people are put in when born into poverty: Is the right thing to obey the law, or is the right thing to feed my family? |
Toad the Wet Sprocket – Stupid Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I agree it's about the wife cheating on him, but not once. I think it's over a period of time. In my experience, when the very first time you find out your SO is unhappy is when you find out they've been cheating, you feel really, really, really stupid. It's shocking - "blinding" - and you go into your own type of PTSD when it comes out of nowhere. "Ooh, I didn't expect that from you." You had this person on a pedestal, and you never expected this. |
Spoon – The Underdog Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Thanks ontore! I felt like the "photo-op" comment was the indicator that he was talking about George W, "The Photo-Op President". But everyone's interpretations about the record industry swayed me. I think his comments here - referring to "the big guy in government" - confirm my suspicions. |
Ween – Someday Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[actonius:12277] Oh yeah. That's what I love about Ween. Every aspect of the tune is sincere... but then there's this one thing that is totally odd, i.e. Pizza Day and the muppet back-up singers. |
Tame Impala – Expectation Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I almost feel like it's wishful thinking that his future present day self could go back and warn his past self not to dive in on this relationship(s), because they're not right, to spare the hurt. The "hint from above" and the "voice from afar" are his future self in this case. |
Michael Penn – On Automatic Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Seems like a positive song at first, but I think he's being sarcastic. Although he's been mistreated by this woman, he's going to give it a shot, so everything's good right? Things are looking up, right? He knows it's stupid, but he's gonna do it anyway. Perhaps there are a couple different scenarios in the song, but each time he goes into it knowing it's a bad idea, but he's gonna do it anyway. That's my initial take, at least. |
Keane – Better Than This Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Can't believe David Bowie doesn't get a writing credit on this! That is lifted straight out of Ashes to Ashes, and everyone in the studio has to know it at the time of recording. Not sure if it's supposed to be a subtle nod to him, but it ain't subtle. |
The Jungle Giants – Like a Weight Lyrics | 8 years ago |
No comments? Great song. Sounds to me like he's so low after being dumped that he's considering suicide... |
American Football – The One with the Tambourine Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Building on what nvrmnt and wD41 said, I suddenly got the image that the red strings are like puppet strings. The insecurities guiding her every decision. Just a thought. |
Kings of Convenience – Parallel Lines Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Two people separated. But one sees them as always connected, as if their lives will come back together. But they never do, because parallel lines never intersect. Very sad. |
Wilco – (Was I) In Your Dreams Lyrics | 8 years ago |
When he lost her, a relationship with her was his dream, he just died inside. I don't think it's to be taken literally that she died. My $0.02. |
Local Natives – Ceilings Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[Lalanote:4299] Whoa. Deep. LOL. I'll try to finish that thought here by saying what the narrator thinks about when he's staring at the ceiling is how this couple's love once was and the state it's in currently, which is decrepit and crumbling... (Perhaps what his ceiling looked like if he lived in an older house.) |
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – So In Love Lyrics | 8 years ago |
That awkward moment when you realize the person you fell in love with was not who you thought they were. And you're angry and embarrassed and hurt, but you stand up for yourself and move on. |
