Taylor Swift – Style Lyrics 9 years ago
Just had to say -- the phrase "never go out of style" was actually in the TV show Friends, which everyone knows Taylor loves. In Season 4, Episode 16 "The One with the Fake Party" there is a scene early on in the episode where Rachel is thinking of sneaking a note into her crush's pocket. Chandler reads the note aloud, which says "Guys like you never go out of style". Although this may not be what inspired Taylor I just thought it was an interesting connection and was surprised no one else had made it.
Another interesting thing: in the show, that line gets a laugh from the audience, I'm assuming since it's uber cheesy? Taylor was able to make it uber cool, instead.

Marina and the Diamonds – Happy Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree fully with elena560, but I think it's also important to mention that she finds this happiness in herself, by herself, for herself. Many people believe the title to be ironic, but I think it's being painfully honest. It's a confession that she's finally able to claim that she's "happy", after all these years of not being able to.

It's important that she says "I found what I was looking for in myself", because it entails that it was HER who gave her happiness, and not anyone else. I think many people like to believe in the romantic notion that some incredible, unique person can save you from your depressive state, but in reality this doesn't happen; Marina finally realizes that the person who was able to give her happiness all along was herself. To reiterate this, she states "I haven't found the one for me", revealing that she really is still alone (single), but not exactly lonely, and then follows it up with "but I believe in divinity", showing that she perhaps has hope for her future relationships, because she now has hope in herself. This is also seen in the phrase "found a life worth living for someone else", where she finally sees that she's not only capable of love, but is also deserving of it.

This is incredibly important message that needed to be sung. So thank you, Marina.

Broods – Mother & Father Lyrics 9 years ago
A truly relatable song that Broods have done a fantastic job on. I think it's just talking about the fear of growing up, the fear of moving on from childhood, and how scary and confusing and disorienting it can be. The mention of the mother and father as well as home projects an image of childhood memories, and the fact that she can't picture their faces too well "their faces start to fade...they're slipping through my hands" is the horrifying realization that your past is exactly that: the past. You can no longer run to your dad to open the pickle jar, or have your mother take care of you when you're sick. It's a terrifying realization, because you (usually) have no one else to rely on right after you leave your parents, hence the "I don't want to wake up lonely".

It's stepping out into the world, finally alone and independent. And instead of taking the "i'm so confident and ready for this" outlook, Broods have taken the "holy shit this is terrifying" alternative look to the situation, which I think is great, because everyone feels that at least once in their life.

The 1975 – Heart Out Lyrics 9 years ago
Surprised no one has commented yet! Not only is it a wicked song with a sick beat and even sicker sax added to it, it's got a great idea behind it.

It's like they've "known" each other for years, but only because they live in the same small town and it's kind of inevitable. But it's more of a "i know OF you", rather than an "i know you" sort of relationship, where they hear things about each other but never really sat down to get to know one another personally. But then in this song, they do. I think they meet and hit it off and actually become pretty good friends, but they kind of have this rumour mill between them, like they've heard rumours of each other they can't get past. So Matty's saying, "well it's just you and i tonight, no one else, so why don't you try and figure me out, then?" basically saying to ignore what you heard of him, and get to know him personally.

Matty's usually very honest in his other songs, so it's easy to picture him sitting down with someone and telling them to ignore rumours and to just get to know him as a person, rather than an idea. He talks a lot of shit about drugs and sex, but in reality I think he believes himself to be quite easy to understand.

OK Go – Here It Goes Again Lyrics 9 years ago
After learning that this is about a one night stand, I really like the title of this track.

It's like he's thinking "damn, I just came here to have a good time and now i think i'm in love. here it goes again" almost like he says it under his breath, exasperated and not entirely excited for it.

"I should've known" that is, he should have known better. Now he's gotten himself into a mess. Great fun of a song.

The 1975 – Milk Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's safe to say he's talking about a girl, who used to be straight-edged, but has now gotten hooked on alcohol, and especially on drugs. It's a hell of a fun song, kind of morbidly, but fitting nonetheless. The only real question is, why is it called milk?

I will go with the symbol from A Clockwork Orange, because I'm a fan of it but also because it just fits in general. I think a lot of people look at milk and think childhood and innocence and growing, and in a Clockwork Orange the main character drinks milk laced with drugs, an ultimate symbol of his innocence being infected.

So by calling it Milk, I think it's just another way of saying that this girl has been infected by drugs, is hooked on them, and so her childlike innocence and naivety has been taken away by her using. I also don't think she's aware of this fact, as Matty is telling the story from an outsider viewing her addiction.

The Fray – The Wind Lyrics 9 years ago
I think, in general, it's just about being lost. That first line says everything, "Oh my God, I think I'm lost at sea."

It's about standing in one spot, and realizing that it's completely different than the one you were standing in before. And you don't know how you got there, or how to deal with the changes, so the result is that you're inexplicably lost. You have to start over again, in a different way, and all you really ever want is to be found and told that everything is okay, and will be okay. I suppose that's what the wind is for: it's a break from the change, a familiar air that reminds you it's okay to be lost sometimes, and that you'll find your way back.

It makes sense that this is about a divorce, then. But in a more general standpoint I think it can be related to any situation that turns your life upside down, one you have to slowly be accustomed to.

The Paper Kites – Bloom Lyrics 9 years ago
Possibly one of the best aspects of this track is that it screams vulnerability. Waking up next to someone in the morning, wanting to write songs about them, and of course the innocent question of, "can I be close to you?" I love that, because true and honest love is all about vulnerability and giving into someone, knowing that it may turn out badly. This is the only song I know that captures that certain fright and excitement at the same time; the knowledge when you know you're in the deep end of falling in love with someone and you want it so desperately, but you're not sure if you can take it or not.

Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics 9 years ago
One of my favourite songs of all time. I know a lot of people believe it's about love in it's purest form, but I like to think that includes all types of love, not just romantic. You're with a person you know you're supposed to be with, whether it's a best friend, parent, or significant other, and you know it's right because you feel it. It's the purest sense of calm, of insignificance but also significance at the same time, it's about being completely and totally content and satisfied in the moment, where everything that doesn't matter just vanishes.

How the hell death cab was able to capture it in a song is beyond me. Pure genius.

Bad Books – Forest Whitaker Lyrics 9 years ago
Incredible song. I kind of like the concept of it, of a relationship where the two people obviously love each other very much, but they're also very impulsive and they don't think how their actions will affect one another. It leaves you with an interesting question, then: If two people love each other very deeply, is that enough for a relationship to strive?

It seems like this song is saying no, it's not enough, and in fact it's quite detrimental.

Still not sure about the Forest Whitaker reference, though.

Hozier – Work Song Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm not sure about the violence/guilt/abuse interpretation, but here's how I see it:

The man has done many wrongs in his life, to the point where he has ended up on the floor, probably close to death, drunk and high and completely ruined. I think he's telling the story of how he was saved, not quite by an angel, but by his love. As the song progresses, it is apparent he believes he owes his life to her, and that having and loving her is worth more than death. As the chorus states, "No grave can ever hold my body down, I'll crawl home to her." And again in the third verse he says "heaven and hell were but words to me," saying that death and anything after it is virtually nothing compared to her saviour. Perhaps he's saying that the death he almost encountered, whether it was purposeful suicide or otherwise, was a permanent problem to a temporary solution and that all he really needed was this his love.
As for the title and the first verse, I think he's just telling his story to his fellow workers, when they're having a hard day at work, he tells them he thinks about this woman who changed his life and saved it and how he's ultimately working for her. Therefore, the work is worth it if it helps his saviour.
