@[Poetic_Mystique:45931] I too always thought of this as a Beatles song (along with No Matter What).
In addition to George Harrison, Mal Evans (who was a road manager and personal assistant to the Beatles) produced a bunch of their stuff and they were on the Apple label.

The Fratellis – Doginabag Lyrics 1 year ago
This isn't "my" interpretation. This is ChatGPT's interpretation...

It is difficult to say for certain what the meaning behind the song "Doginabag" by The Fratellis might be without additional context or explanation from the band themselves. However, some possible interpretations of the lyrics could include:

The narrator is observing someone who seems to have everything they want, but is still unfulfilled or lost in some way. The "dog in a bag" could symbolize this person's emptiness or unhappiness.

The song could be a commentary on the superficiality of modern life, where people are focused on material possessions and external validation rather than true happiness and fulfillment.

The lyrics could also be interpreted as a commentary on the idea of the "American dream", where people chase a certain lifestyle or status, but find it unfulfilling when they achieve it.

It should be noted that these are just some possible interpretations and the true meaning behind the song can only be confirmed by the band themselves.

Urge Overkill – Sister Havana Lyrics 1 year ago
From Nash Kato: "It sounded like a hook: 'sis-ter Ha-vana,'" he said. "Then the lyrics more or less wrote themselves. We didn't have any firm stance on America's relationship with Cuba, but it sang well and sounded like a hook. There was no political commitment."

The Kooks – Mr. Maker Lyrics 3 years ago
The interview below is from Kronen Zietung and I left it as Google Translate translated it, without correction:
Interviewer: The guy you portray in "Mr Maker" is that someone you never want to be, or is that all of the brave path-seekers you want to change?
Luke Pritchard: Mr Maker is the ultimate do-gooder for me. He lives in a clean suburb in America where nothing bad never happens. And he doesn't do anything bad either, he's not the one who slips away to do bad things in the city.
Interviewer: But isn't "Mr Maker", for example when he looks away in the lyrics when the priest is groping children, a terribly superficial guy with blinkers?
Luke Pritchard: Yeah, sure. He is not one who takes action or takes his stand. About the priest who is being removed because he has not behaved correctly - that's what the lyrics say - I read in the newspaper. Mr Maker pisses off, of course, but he looks away anyway. In that sense he is superficial, but he still does not run into debt that would prevent his journey to heaven.

Liam Gallagher – Once Lyrics 4 years ago
The song is probably about his relationship with his wife, though my initial thinking was that it was about his relationship with Noel and I think either would be valid in a lot of ways (though I doubt Noel ever went down like a glass of wine...)
It's about how the early days of their relationship were easy and magical and over time, the magic fades and the humdrum of every day life, cleaning the pool, sending the kids to school takes over and the past is kind of gone; you only get to do it "once".

Letters to Cleo – Here And Now Lyrics 4 years ago
From an interview with WGBH Boston.
Q: Hanley was going through a breakup while writing the record…
A: Oh yeah. It was a pretty big breakup.

Q: … and things that happened in that relationship made their way into the song.
A: He always used to tell people that, 'you’re a parody of yourself.' Like that was his ultimate diss that he could give someone. And honestly to this day he's like,'Where are my royalties for that line?' I think he just asked me that again like 2 years ago. And he had a book called The Comfort of Strangers under our coffee table for years. I never read it but the title stood out to me. So that became ‘comfort of knowledge’ and it’s about karma and energy. And the ‘comfort of a knowledge of a rise above the sky above,’ is like you know you’re going to heaven so just do whatever you want while you’re here. It’s a rejection of that idea.

Q: She believes that your time on earth is finite, and that you should be the best version of yourself while you’re here.
A: You should be good while you’re here. You should live the best version of yourself while you’re here as opposed to relying on this huge sky ghost to take care of you later.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Fly From Heaven Lyrics 4 years ago
@[DHNF:31212] You are largely correct. But the line is "Changed the name of my brother" which I believe is referring to the fact that Paul called him Christ, which is the title given to the savior, not really a name.
But yes, if you read Mathew, Mark and Luke, only once in all of that does Jesus make a comment regarding belief in him: Matthew 10:33 "but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven."
With regards to being saved, however, Jesus says a lot of stuff. There are, of course what he said were the two most important commandments: Love God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind, and Love your neighbor as yourself. He said that you are not saved by following rules, but by the purity of your motives. That it's almost impossible (if not impossible) if you're rich. You must be committed to living a life of service to others. You must be humble. You must use your gifts to serve God and others. That you must repent and seek forgiveness.
Those are all things Jesus says is Matthew, Mark and Luke. If you look at John (which was very probably written in Ephesus after Paul established a church there, so is really very Pauline in its writing) or the epistles of Paul, there are only 2 things required for salvation: Faith in Christ and Practice good works.
Paul does not reflect the teachings of Jesus and certainly not in what's required for salvation.

Crowded House – Weather With You Lyrics 6 years ago
The song is about how you make your own weather. Is it sunny weather? Are you happy? Or is it stormy weather? Is your life a mess? Your life is what you make of it. You always take the weather with you. Simple as that...

- Walking 'round the room singing
- Stormy Weather
Being in a bad mood

- At fifty seven Mt. Pleasant St.
- Now it's the same room but everything's different
Your mood colors everything in the present

- You can fight the sleep but not the dream
- Things ain't cooking in my kitchen
- Strange affliction wash over me
Things aren't happy "in my kitchen".

- Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire
- Couldn't conquer the blue sky
It's hard to get out of a funk

- There's a small boat made of china
- Going nowhere on the mantelpiece
Being too fragile to live life

- Do I lie like a lounge room lizard
- Or do I sing like a bird released
Do I choose to be gloomy or do I choose to be enthusiastic about life?

Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics 6 years ago
"It's not about the serial killer. I'm not sure exactly what it's about because it's just sort of like telling someone a dream you had last night. There are some destructive figures in it, 'Son of Sam', Shiva... but Shiva's also associated with creativity... I'm not sure... it's just an impressionistic song about destruction and creativity, I guess, if it's about anything." -- Elliott Smith

Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics 7 years ago
I think the song is about physical expertise. To give a non-football example, when playing an instrument and learning new techniques or songs, it's common, especially for less experienced players, to feel rushed. To feel like there's not enough time to get to the next note, and it feels like your fingers and hands can barely keep up. Learning a new guitar solo, for example, you may struggle to hit the notes on time. To get your fingers where they need to be.

You build up muscle memory by repeating this tough parts over and over and over again and eventually, you stop feeling rushed. The movements become for fluid and natural. And before you know it, you have "all kinds of time" to get to the next note. You don't feel rushed at all.

I think this happens in anything that requires muscle memory. I was reminded of it again last week when I was watching people surf on a wave rider. The experienced surfers were relaxed. Their leg muscles just knew what to do. They didn't have to think about it. The less experienced riders were struggling. Every little movement required concentration and quick corrections and they would struggle to make those movements fast enough to correct and not wipe out.

I think the song is about when you hit that moment. That moment in the zone, when you suddenly realize that you don't have to think about the details of your movements. That your body "knows" what to do and you can kind of relax and enjoy the moment.

The Decemberists – Down by the Water Lyrics 7 years ago
Straight from the horse's mouth: "‘Down by the Water,’ the idea is a gang coming into a resort town for the summer and the heartbreaks that occur in the wake of this transient population taking over the town,” Meloy says. “I feel like it’s not necessarily anchored to any time or place.” From Relevant magazine 3/29/11.

Dave Matthews Band – So Much to Say Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm kind of torn on two meanings. Lots of gay people think it's about being gay "I say my hell is the closet I'm stuck inside," so I see that. But to me, the more apparent meaning is about a baby/young child.

"I see you young and soft oh little baby
little feet, little feet, little hands little baby
one year of crying and the words creep up inside
creep into your mind yeah"

"One year of crying" - baby - "and the words creep up inside" at about a year, starts talking.

So I wonder if the "closet" he's "stuck inside" isn't about the inability to express yourself.

"open up my head and let me out little baby"

Anyway, that's kind of where I see it coming from, but I'm not sure. Not really sure how this fits in, though:

"and my heaven is a nice house in the sky
I got central heating and I'm alright"

The Shins – September Lyrics 9 years ago
The song was written for Mercer's wife. For Magnet magazine, he wrote, “A working title that stuck, which happens sometimes. September happens to be the month that I first saw (wife) Marisa. I didn’t actually meet her until months later when she came to interview me for Spin. I realized that I had seen her in the audience [at Irving Plaza during the Chutes Too Narrow tour], which is weird—for me to have that moment, especially without my glasses on. But she’s tall and she’s distinctive looking, and she was with somebody who looked a lot like her but was shorter. That’s what I told her when we met, and she was like, ‘I was with my younger sister.’ So we hit it off and never really looked back, and she decided it would be unethical to do the story.”

And of course, as Zadillo pointed out, it references Pontus and seems that he's comparing his wife to Aphrodite.

Beautiful song!

Foo Fighters – Big Me Lyrics 9 years ago
An additional quote in support: "There are a few songs we play that every night I actually feel in my gut, and when I scream the chorus, I feel it, and I'm not thinking about being on-key or...cos a lot of the times I do -when I'm singing a pretty love song like 'Big Me' and my wife is standing on the side of the stage, I don't want to sound like a dog being kicked in the stomach..."

Foo Fighters – Big Me Lyrics 9 years ago
I like the conversation that turns into a fight theory, but that ain't it. It's a love song written for his wife. From the mouth of the horse himself: "That was a song I wrote for my wife. I didn't think that she would be too happy if I wrote a song like Weenie Beenie about her, so I wrote a little love pop song called Big Me. It's just a cuddly little love song."
