Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics 9 years ago
Symbolically the ocean -generally the water element- stands for the sentiment. She feels like floating in a sea of emotions. A whole new universe reveals to her ,embracing and serene but also "cold" and possibly unfamiliar. And yet open to discover! "Not giving up, but giving in" may be understood as surrendering to her feelings while not being afraid anymore to unravel her true core in a world of cynical rationalisation in search even of her darkest repressed desires. So,the main pro-chorus verse "Never let me go" is addressed to the personification and synecdoche of the ocean as the constant flow of emotional perception. Water cannot find a solid shape. As a result it overwhelms any attempt of rational filtering. Florence Welch elaborated on the title and meaning of the song "What the Water Gave Me": "It's a song for the water, because in music and art what I'm really interested in are the things that are overwhelming. The ocean seems to me to be nature's great overwhelmer. It's about water in all forms and all bodies. It's about a lot of things; Virginia Woolf creeps into it, and of course Frida Kahlo, whose painfully beautiful painting gave me the title". Björk in her song "Oceania" for the 2004 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony uses again the Ocean as a symbol of the archetypal matrix. Figuratively this embodies the constant sentimental urge to return to the uterus, the point of birth and life and semantically the protective nest. And when you get "life" ,you also get "death" as a balancing natural force. That is the point when this glimpse of the death drive comes into the song's meaning. The drive towards death, self-destruction and the return to the inorganic: "the hypothesis of a death instinct, the task of which is to lead organic life back into the inanimate state", originally proposed by Freud in "Beyond the Pleasure Principle",where he wrote of the "opposition between the ego or death instincts and the sexual or life instincts".

Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics 10 years ago
That's exactly what i thought when i first listened to this song!
However i think one of them-possibly the lesbian girl-is still chasing the other "innocent" one with no response.
So it's not only a song about wounded feelings but also a song about cruel revenge even in the most literal way.
We could conclude that the story unfolds simultaneously on both levels; literal and allegorical.
