Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics 4 years ago

Very good. I like how you articulate the science vs 'what is' so well. No matter how you reason and how you explain it, it's not enough. It does not do justice to her, to the magic.

And he wishes he better took advantage of the magic he had, because he no longer has it, and he can't go back.

I think that the chasing tails part means he's not getting anywhere going over and over the past relationship. But he does it anyways.

I also think coming up tails means a negative result of the process, again, not getting anywhere. Not able to go back to the thing he craves so badly. Tails is bad luck, and he will not get heads, but he still continues to desire what he can no longer have.

Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics 5 years ago
I see it as him relating his (arguably justified) cynicism towards humanity (including himself) and life in general.

Seeing nothing as genuine and so much superficiality in life leaves him isolated. The worst part is, he realizes that he is not perfect either, and it leaves him with fleeting feelings of lack. It feels to me as if he can't see the point of it all.

It makes me wonder if he is arguing that things could be right, but people are so astray that things are amazingly wrong, and it is plain to see. He has the eyes to see, which is apparently a burden to carry through life.

@[osall1291:16854] Or maybe drugs? Just saying because of the blue lights = police? I may be way off, but that was my original impression when I first heard it.

I agree. The verse sounds to me like:

Go outside on the patio
A piano's weeping tune
Forget about it all for a little while
She don't mind, she don't care

Cake – Frank Sinatra Lyrics 9 years ago
Not sure if it is self evident to everyone else, but from reading through the different interpretations, I thought that maybe the cob webs are falling because the spiders have no use for it, as they are no longer catching flies with it.

I do think, like others have mentioned, that the cob webs are representing old age and places that no longer receive attention and maintenance (places left behind).

Maybe the old record is skipping because the old man is either senile or has died while listening to the record? I don't think this is the case. I think it is more symbolic of another meaning as some have mentioned. Perhaps there are multiple meanings at the same time.

I like all of the ideas, but still haven't put together what I feel is the intended meaning (if there is one at all). The meanings that make most sense are the ones dealing with love, specifically about the "Stormy Weather" song meaning being correlated to the overall theme of this song.

Yes, someone is faintly yelling at the end of the song while the trumpet is playing the awesome end portion of this song. It sounds like it is probably the lead singer.

Everyone has their own form of expression. She could sing like everyone on the radio, but that is not what she felt inspired to do. You start making music from your heart and see how it comes out.

One more note: this "emergency situation" (such as a sinking ship with thousands of people on it) could be a metaphor for how they perceive the current state of life.

In the past, when I listened to the part "I don't want any pushing... we're going to do this in an orderly manner", I thought it was about a modern Nazi-like takeover situation, and they are imprisoning a mass number of people...

But your post for some reason gave me the idea of a huge sinking cruise ship filled with people, and they are trying to get as many people onto lifeboats as they can. They know they can't, so they are telling everyone to be orderly about it. People want to freak out because some of them have to die, but they are told to be orderly, otherwise the chaos would slow down the salvation of the lucky few to survive the catastrophe.

On another note, I think that the original version of this song is so much better than the new version. It just has so much magic and driving energy. Of course this is biased because I became attached to this version before the newest one came out, but I still have to say it.

Arcade Fire – The Woodlands National Anthem Lyrics 10 years ago
"I pass my sister on a bus
Let's take the country road before our parents send for us"

The sister sees them on the bicycle and is going to tell the parents where they are. Maybe they ditched school?

Musically, this is my favorite Arcade Fire song. It has so much beauty and raw emotion.

Lyrically, I feel that it is possible that the writer feels isolated and perhaps an outcast in their community. They want to go away but feel there is nowhere to go, or they don't know how.

At the end, I feel as if they are the product of a failed society, and feel like failed experiments. They feel they don't belong, and are not sure what to do about it. Their parents likely would never understand this, or maybe they are too caught up in their own feelings and problems to notice.

There could be many meanings blended together in this song, and some perhaps intentionally abstract. Some of the previous views expressed are very interesting.

Is there any official information regarding the meaning of this song?
