Brian Ferry – Slave To Love Lyrics 10 years ago
Very interesting to read the comments...I think the song is about obsession...when that magic of attraction occurs...two people caught up in a feeling that they can't escape (i.e. Slave to Love). It's that semi-dream like state of two people who are crazy about each other and can't stop thinking about one another...the lyrics and melody add to the strangeness and beauty of the song. I would contrast this, however, with love... a stable, reassuring sense of connectedness.

see I think that part is metaphorical...love will be gone....so, don't shy away...let's make this happen.

...apologies...just checked...not a TV show but a 1936 Ogden Nash poem named "Custard the Dragon".

The drug reference is a silly misconception about this song...the only words that could have any relation to drugs are: "Puff" and "Paper"...("draggin'" is a stretch) granted, the Jackie Paper name for the little boy is mildly suspicious. However, if you read the lyrics it would be hard to make a case for this song being a reference to drugs...furthermore, that theory has been repeatedly denied by the song writers for 40 some years. They have consistently claimed that it is about the "nostalgia of growing up and the loss of childhood". The song was first written as a poem by one Peter's roommates at Cornell who was initially inspired to write it based on a popular TV show at that time of a dragon "custard".

I don't know that the song is this specific...although I enjoyed reading your interpretation. I think the song is about the nature of first love...the magic, the insecurity...the awkwardness. "I'm no better to be safe than sorry...why not take a chance ...give me a try......"Take on Me". Shying away is more about the fear of taking a chance and being hurt.. if you look at the video, it is at odds with your theory...the girl finds him in the comic (love is first a dream)...she goes into the comic...falls in love...comes out...wonders if it was real...then the boy changes from cartoon to human (love becomes real). There was no real split up or reconciliation...the whole theme was about making love happen.

Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the song is metaphorical, but something that can be made sense of. The Hotel California represents the California high-life...the promise of the fame and fortune of the 70s that brought people to the state...from an outsiders point of view, it is attractive and draws people (like a drug)...however, be careful..."you can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave"...once there, it is hard to escape. Henley didn't literally mean California...he meant the trappings of "ego" ....the mind state of being absorbed by pleasures and the "self"...as they can never bring true happiness.
