System of a Down – ATWA Lyrics 10 years ago
My interpretation of this song is like a twisted serial killer's lament of what his world has turned him into.
"Hey you, see me, pictures crazy,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
I've got, nothing, to gain, to lose,
All the world I've seen before me passing by" he's seen every possible opportunity to make something of his existence slip through his fingers, and he sees the rest of the world 'passing by' not caring, not even noticing him or the millions like him.
"You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore" is a continuation of this sentiment. He's saying that he's gradually felt the need to clip down all 'superfluous' emotions that others in his school and/or society have collectively deemed irrelevant or pointless. He's had to become sociopathic and psychopathic to avoid the hurt he's had to deal with all his life. The rest- "I don't feel, eat, sleep etc." this is like his aspiration- he wants to become something numbed, anaesthetised to the agony of his plight, able to exist without any real effort or input, just drifting and not caring, like he sees everyone else around him managing.
"Hey you, are me, not so pretty,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
Silent my voice, I've got no choice
All the world I've seen before me passing by,"
He knows that anyone, from the lowest degenerate to the highest saint, will inevitably turn into this when put through this kind of treatment, when held at arm's length for this long.
Basically, this song is questioning how we can possibly wonder the origins of the monsters we're creating. We fail to protect our youngest children from the vices of torment and hatred, and put these walls around them, separating them from their friends, loved ones and ultimately from themselves. We perpetuate this destruction, then in mourning seek vengeance on a scapegoat- failing to realise, or in vehement denial of, the fact that this is all caused by us, our interference in human emotion, our failure to let people be, our twisted sadistic tendencies and our incompetence as a society in helping sculpt these incomplete people into something other than hideous and harrowing gargoyles.

Device – Wish Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a witty, sarcastic and savage attack on religion, particularly the aggressive dogma of Christianity. There need to be more songs like this, they're needed in the modern world :3

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah, science has failed the world by providing all the answers and basically saving humankind from a short life of manual labour followed by death... umwhat? SOAD are smart but this is just retarded...

Stone Sour – Bother Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this is about breaking away from religion and dogma in general.
Aside from the obvious, "Never had a voice to protest" jumped out at me as being the largest pointer to this conclusion

Gojira – Explosia Lyrics 10 years ago
occupy... through and through...
the only line that has any ambiguity to it on this front is the jealousy bit in the beginning, but it still makes sense... jealousy, as in the 99% looking at the 1% and wanting what they have

System of a Down – Fuck The System Lyrics 10 years ago
DEAR GOD FORBID SOMEONE BE LIGHT HEARTED ABOUT SOMETHING! No, everything must be a profound realisation, nobody can just have a bit of fun anymore...
Come the fuck on, every other SOAD song, maybe minus one or two, has been deep, meaningful and insightful- don't begrudge them a bit of a laugh at the expense of the reprehensible!

It's so sickening... I'd never even HEARD of this before, and I have a similar feeling to when I first found out about project MkUltra... what the hell else don't we know about? That's the worrying thing...

Demon Hunter – Collapsing (feat. Björn "Speed" Strid) Lyrics 10 years ago
Oh for Christ's sake... like most Atheists are fucking consumed by darkness and lie awake, silently screaming nihilism at the ceiling? -_-
I like the song and think this is a bunch of talented guys, and I'm all for religious pride and passion, but don't spread malice and hate. Most atheists are happy, well-adjusted people with functioning morals. We don't need the stigmatisation and the vilification which comes from told you're a disordered and morally corrupt individual~ badly paraphrasing Stephen Fry on being gay, and it also applies to Atheists like myself.

This is a cry of protest from someone trapped in an abusive relationship- the first thing that came to mind was an abused spouse, but I guess it could be taken to mean something larger about society. Fucking amazing song, Device are awesome XD

Tristania – Year Of The Rat Lyrics 11 years ago
This is just speculation, but it sounds to me somewhat like an ode to the hiders and smugglers of Nazi Germany (or more generally any such regime, it just fits the Nazi one best.)
'Walk the line/keep your direction/& read the signs' refers to the fact that you couldn't afford to look back and had to find the strength to keep going
'Play the game or fade away/ make your confessions & book a ride' refers to the fact that many had to play a twisted 'game' and rat out other Jews to survive.
The next verse 'Now that your sparkling smile is outworn...' is about someone having been beaten and pummeled so hard, and is sung from the perspective of a smuggler saying 'I'll help you'.
The next one ('Change your name and change your face/For your protection and the new day/Believe in me you can be free/Escape the aggression and book that ride) is someone who has changed their identity and is fleeing from Poland (or wherever) on a train.
The finale (Now you’re a rat and you can’t sleep at night/Under the spell of the following eye/This is the game there’s no getting out/I’ve seen the end and it looks like a nine/You feel the chill that just crept down your spine/This time, the last surrender/The axe won’t be buried, not ever, not sorry/It is too late to worry) is about the many demons that have been unearthed by the whole harrowing event- for smugglers, for 'rats' (ie Jews who told on others to survive) & for the countless other survivors.
Part of this song's beauty is that it has many different meanings, and can be interpreted in many different ways- this is just the one that both seemed most likely and most resonated with me. What a rare, majestic and beautiful piece of art it is. I only heard it just now and I almost cried =').
