New Order – Blue Monday Lyrics 10 years ago
Hahahaha....now that's funny. Wrong, Bonobos, but funny nonetheless.

No, the phrase "but if it wasn't for your misfortune" is a reference to how Sumner feels about leading New Order in the absence of former Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis (back when New Order was Joy Division); what Sumner's basically saying is that he's very uncomfortable being the frontman for their band and in his heart he knows Curtis was and will always be the band's lead singer, even though he's no longer with them...all Sumner feels he's doing is filling in(hence the phrase in question).

It was also ties in with the second half of the line, "I'd be a heavenly person today"...what Sumner's saying with both phrases is "I'd rather just be a bass player in the band, with Curtis continuing to be the frontman; as it is, I'm uncomfortable being in the lead but I'll manage just the same."

Great interpretation, Dg...as to the "ship in the harbour" part:

For what it's worth, the "ship in the harbour" reference could be Bernard Sumner looking back at the past 3 decades and wondering where he would be had Joy Division's lead singer, Ian Curtis, not committed suicide back in 1980; to him, Joy Division is the ship in the harbour, a ship formerly captained by Curtis but now has been put in Sumner's hands and even though he does an admirable job steering it around in Curtis' absence, he knows it's not his ship, it was Curtis' and to him, while it may never be his ship, he'll do everything he can to steer it right, not just for himself and the other bandmates but for their fans also...

I agree, Camb...what the singer's basically saying is "even when things are at their worst, things will work themselves out for you...but, don't take the good times for granted, for things might go back in the other direction."

Listening to this song, you can almost imagine what the songwriters' thinking...he's essentially saying, "You got one shot at this life...when the opportunities come your way, you've got to be prepared to take them for you never know when they'll come around again."
