To me this song is less about going back to someone who keeps letting you down, but more about not giving up on the idea of love just because you've been hurt. The "emptiness" is the feeling of loss as the old relationship ends, but "run right back for more" is about finding a new one. In my opinion it's a positive message and the "lesson" he's talking about is actually one you shouldn't ever learn. |
