Modest Mouse – Ohio Lyrics 9 years ago
I interpret the "one way eyes" line like this. I think it has two meanings. One is that we can't see life through someone else's eyes. The other reminds me of the saying about eyes being the gateway to the soul. I think he's saying that no one can see what's inside of another person, even if we look them in the eye. He's saying "one way eyes" is a reference to "two way mirrors." A "one way mirror" is a regular mirror that you can't see through.

I think this is about aging in general. I think Trent basically "woke up" after her got sober and sort of realized that the past 20 years he was basically on auto-pilot and didn't really "live" his life. Now looking back on it now it seems like waking up from a really strange dream and finding yourself 20 years older and trying to cope with that. The regret. The uncertainty. The loss of identity. Etc.

Nine Inch Nails – The Big Come Down Lyrics 10 years ago
Honestly, I think this is about a drug relationship.

"There is a game I play
Try to make myself okay"

The game is him using some drug in order to feel better/cope with his problems.

"Try so hard to make the pieces all fit
Smash it apart
Just for the fuck of it"

He "tries" to get clean, but ends up going back to it, which in essence destroys all his progress and makes his efforts to get clean in vain.

The chorus I think is him being sort of sarcastic or mocking. He's saying goodbye to happiness and prosperity and health and all that. He very well could be speaking to other people as "Lodair" suggests, or he could be talking to himself. He's basically questioning why he chooses to go back again and again.

"There is a hate that burns within
The most desperate place I have ever been"

Pretty self-explanatory. The "most desperate place" being withdrawal/feinding for more.

"Try to get back to where I'm from
The closer I get the worse it becomes
The closer I get the worse it becomes"

I think this is referring to his past and wanting to resolve whatever issues he has from it. However, the closer he gets to truly facing these problems and resolving them, the more painful and unbearable it is, and he ends up going back to drugs for solace and comfort and escape.

Yeah, I'm an Atheist, but it's not because of the horrible things done in the name of God. I think it's foolish to blame the leader for the actions of the followers. I mean, is Obama to blame for every misguided "Patriot" that decides to kill someone in the name of country? I don't think that's fair. But if you can make it through college without changing your beliefs, more power to you, but in my opinion you shouldn't fear having your faith challenged. It's good to know what you believe, why you believe it, and be able to back it up when somebody tells you you're wrong. I loved college too, it totally solidified my own personal identity in a lot of ways.

Pretty good interpretations and I just have one small thing to add. I always thought the lyric was "I'm afraid I can't help it. I'm afraid I CAN." To me, if these are the correct lyrics, it adds to the description of fear. On the one hand people fear not having the power and control to change the world for the better, but on the other hand people are afraid of that very power because they are afraid of the responsibility.

Monster Magnet – Bummer Lyrics 10 years ago
I can see the drug interpretation of this and I like diemundave's interpretation, but if you think about the lyrics literally, then it seems to also maybe be about a kid that's grown up not knowing his father and thinks Dave is his dad.

"You're looking for the one that fucked your mom, it's not me. It's not me."

Dave isn't the father.

"You're looking for the one who made you cry, that's not me. It's not me."

Again Dave explaining to the kid that he's not the one who left him.

"If you want to stuff your garbage in that hole, oh, baby I'm your man of the hour."

Dave's saying, "If you want to do drugs, then I'm your man."

"You think the world's got the evil eye on you, that's not true. That's not true."

He's telling him that the world isn't really against him or out to get him like he thinks it is.

"The only one I see causing major pain is just you. It's just you"

He's telling him his problems are his own fault.

"If you want to spank your demons and make 'em pay, then baby I'm your man of the hour."

If he wants to exercise his demons through drugs or whatever, then again, he's his man.

"Some people go to bed with Lucifer, then they cry when they don't greet the day with God."

I think this is about the mother. She had sex with some guy that wasn't the father type and now she's bitching about it.

"I know life's a bummer baby, but that's got precious little to do with me."

Basically, he knows life sucks, but it has nothing to do with him.

"You think you've found the one most like yourself and that's me? Yeah that's me"

Most like yourself meaning that the kid went out looking for his father, so he started by looking for someone who resembled him and possibly acted like him too.

"You're sure we've known each other all our lives? That could be. That could be."

He's questioning him, but saying that, yeah it's possible at the same time.

"I needed a small vacation, so they put me on a train.
They called it "rehabilitation," oh, but here I am again.
It's against my second nature not to chase you down that hole.
I need a fistful of medication, just to keep it in my pants."

I think this part is about Dave's struggle with drugs, but also lust, as referenced by the "keep it in my pants" part. This part I think is saying that he would need all kinds of medication to not chase women. Which relates to the rest of the lyrics because the whole songs about this kid who's looking for his dad and Dave's saying he isn't the father, but he's a lot like him because he has one night stands and leaves too.

A good bit of these lyrics seem to point towards sex, infidelity in particular.
"Rock the boat"- Sex
"Throwing your voice in bed singing a note"- Moaning during intercourse

The rest is about lying to cover up your infidelity and keep it hidden, but ultimately it will always lead to trouble in the end. Something I think Jack probably knows about first hand...It's a warning to stay faithful to your partner.

Sentenced – Sun Won't Shine Lyrics 10 years ago
Just a thought, but sometimes having someone you care deeply about close enough to touch, but not quite close enough to kiss just brings pain and hurt. If he still has feelings for you, then it's probably difficult for him to try to not act upon them and act like he just looks at you like a friend. Plus, if he has any sort of guilt over why the relationship ended, then seeing you and being around you and you being happy will just be a reminder of what could of been and hurt him more. So, maybe breaking away from you completely will be good for him. Maybe it will force him to either get over you and move on or....well, let's not think about the alternatives. But regardless of what happens, you should understand that he made that choice and he and he alone is responsible for the consequences of it. And you can't spend the rest of your life being his pacifier. At some point he will have to move on, if he wants to that is.

Nine Inch Nails – In Two Lyrics 10 years ago
Well, I don't necessarily agree with you (eksfaktr), but I think you're sort of right. First off, I don't think it's literal. I think it's more about how he has changed over the years and grown as a person. The first verse seems to be about him being "reborn" in a sense, and I think that's what he's referring to with the imagery. "Shed your precious skin" where the "skin" is his image, the image everyone expects him to wear. He's telling himself that he needs to stop trying to be what everyone wants him to be and just be himself, even though it is vastly different from who/how he was during The Downward Spiral era for example. He has to purge who he was, which basically means the same thing as shaking off his image, because his image was who he was in the past. It is going to hurt to fully change and show the world who he is now, show the world his new image. The part about it being "someone else" I think is about him doubting and second guessing himself about being this new person. The chorus is again him being unsure of who he really is or really wants to be. The next verse seems to be like two different parts of him talking, one part being the part of him that wants to change, and the other being the one that wants to hold onto the past. "Thrive just become your disease"-this is the part of him that wants to hold onto his old image. His "disease" being addiction and self-destruction. I think Reznor makes a connection between his past self-destructive self and his fame and success. I know when With Teeth came out he said how he felt unsure about even being able to write songs sober. So now it's like he wants the success and all that from his past, but without the addiction issues and self-destructive attitudes and behaviors. And that's precisely where the dilemna lies. Part of him thinks "fuck it, just go back to being an addict so you can have all the success all over again," but the other part of him says "no, you can't turn back to drugs," so he's stuck in this decision about what to do. "Leave them behind you are free"- this part is the part of him that wants to change telling him to leave the past behind him and accept who he is today. "Take what you want, what you deserve"- what you want and what you deserve are often two different things. He wants fame, success, etc.., but wonders if he really deserves that after the way he abused things before, if is family deserves that. Either way, the decision he makes is going to hurt him. He concludes by saying he still isn't sure what he should do or what he wants to do or if he will even be able to do it once he decides. Think of it as an identity crisis, or possibly even a mid-life crisis.

Marilyn Manson – 1996 Lyrics 10 years ago
This was written much prior to 1996's election campaign. I always thought it was a reference to the year 1969, the year of Manson's birth and also the year the Charles Manson murders occurred, who I think was a big inspiration for the dominant theme on this album (also, perhaps coincidentally, Manson I believe once covered the song "If 6 was 9," which sort of goes with this "1996" becoming "1969"). Also, I believe the correct lyrics are "The Anti-World is at my back." I think this meaning is different from the other incorrect lyric. Here, the "Anti-World" means the "world" that is full of "anti-people," people who are against everything. "Anti-World" having the same meaning as the "sportsworld" or "newsworld." I think this is speaking particularly to Christianity though. Christianity is full of "Thou shalt not's" and Christians are typically "anti-life" in that they deny life in a very Nietzschean sense. They also deny the world, or the worldly. Manson is saying, just like Nietzsche said, that Christianity is really basically against everything that is actually "good," even life itself. They are supreme Nihilists. The "anti-world" be at his back means that he has put all that behind him, he has moved past it.

Nine Inch Nails – March of the Pigs Lyrics 10 years ago
The more I think about it, the more I think it's about fans. The opening line seems like it is addressing an audience. It actually reminds me of something an old soap-box salesman would say that's trying to get you to buy his product. But here's how I see it.

Step right up march push
Crawl right up on your knees
Please greed feed (no time to hesitate)

This is him speaking to his fans.

I want a little bit I want a piece of it I think he's losing it
I want to watch it come down
Don't like the look of it don't like the taste of it don't like the
Smell of it
I want to watch it come down

This is the fans speaking or their thoughts. The "I think he's losing it" part is a direct reference to Reznor. It's like he's basically self-destructing right on stage and we all want more. We want him to fall, to hurt, to destroy himself because we find it entertaining and are so far removed form any sort of empathy or care for him as a person. We just want whatever he's selling. The "don't like the look of it......" seems to be more about critics of his music. They want him to be destroyed too, but not because they find him entertaining, but because they don't like his music.

All the pigs are all lined up
I give you all that you want
Take the skin and peel it back
Now doesn't that make you feel better?

Again, Reznor speaking to the crowd. He gives us all we want, and at the same time it's like we're ripping him apart, because we feed off his suffering, and it makes us feel better in the way that music can be therapeutic.

Shove it up inside surprise! lies
Stains like the blood on your teeth
Bite chew suck away the tender parts

Reznor to his fans again....The tender parts being Reznor's emotions and feelings. Lies being how fans can turn on him and become "haters."

I want to break it up I want to smash it up I want to fuck it up
I want to watch it come down
Maybe afraid of it let's discredit it let's pick away at it
I want to watch it come down

More of the fans throughts and wishes.

Now doesn't that make you feel better?
The pigs have won tonight
Now they can all sleep soundly
And everything is all right

This is like after the show/concert. He's saying how the fans can now just go home and be "normal" again since they've came and watched him destroy himself, yet he's still left alone and broken with no one that cares.

Green Lizard – Hurt Lyrics 10 years ago
So, let me get this straight. You have feelings for a guy named Todd, but you kiss a guy you've been "curious" about for 4 years and are going on a date with a different guy because "you want to." To be honest it sounds like you don't know what you want. It sounds like you're confused, and in my opinion, jumping around from this guy to the next isn't going to make things any clearer for you. Regarding Todd I would say this. Age doesn't really matter once you get to be a certain age. My girlfriend was 16 and I was 20 when we met, that was 7 years ago. So age differences can still work. The way I would approach the problem of being such good friends is to ask yourself if you could remain close friends with him while you are in a relationship with someone. Could you be in a serious relationship with someone without having betraying feelings or hidden desires for him? I'm not a love or relationship expert by any means, but I'm not even sure that you're ready for any type of relationship at this point. It seems like you like to lead people on and tease them, but aren't really looking for anything substantial. So my advice would be to cool down. Just because someone likes you doesn't mean you are obligated to go on a date with them, and just because you're curious about someone doesn't necessarily justify kissing him either. I understand "doing what you want," but what you want is constantly changing, so you will never find stability by simply following and being led by your whims. Reason should play a very big role in decision making. I would bet that if you keep kissing all your friends, that you will end up with no friends after a while. There's no point in arousing feelings in someone else if there's no intent to act on those feelings afterwards. One kiss can change everything. Almost all friends of the opposite sex have had some type of relationship interest with one another at some time. A kiss will bring all of these feeling to the forefront instead of them remaining under the surface. Happy New Year!

Nine Inch Nails – I Would for You Lyrics 10 years ago
Again, I think this has to do with Trent coming to terms with being someone different than he was when he was writing the Downward Spiral. The first two lines are referring to written song lyrics, pathetic ones apparently. I take this to be lyrics written currently that seem pathetic when compared to TDS's lyrics. He feels like he's failing to live up to his past. The next two lines are a metaphor for him no longer living in that type of environment/situation. Like people are looking for him to be behind the door labeled "bleak/depressing industrial god/ self-destructive/etc.." but none of those labels really fit him anymore. People are expecting him to be something he no longer is. People are trying to pigeon-hole him into a specific genre or a specific style or define him by a specific type of subject, all of which have since changed. People are expecting him to be one thing when he's really not anymore. The next two lines are pretty self-explanatory. He could of become the dark, industrial/goth, archetype person that eventually really does self-destruct into suicide, but that's not what happened. He has stepped over all those broken pieces of his shattered former life, and is asking us to do the same. The next two lines I think are more intimate. Perhaps about Mariqueen coming into his life emotionally and him being a bit reluctant to share his past because he is somewhat ashamed of it or he just still has a fear of letting anyone get too close. To me the chorus is him expressing his love for someone, whether it's his fans, his wife, or his children, I don't know, but he's saying that he wishes his past wasn't such a tragedy and perhaps was a better example if he's speaking to his children. He wishes that he could change his past so that he could be everything "good" and not be damaged from all of it so that they (his children/wife/fans) would have a better person. He keeps lying to himself by saying that he IS this "good" person and by trying to forget his past, but he realizes there really is no way of escaping it and lying to himself about it is the only way he knows how to deal with it without falling apart or being depressed about it or whatever. "Didn't it seem like something more?" This is about the expectations of him. He was expected to continue rising in popularity and influence etc, but instead he declined, at least in popularity he did. The next stanza is about his fear of the past repeating itself, probably specifically about his drug addiction resurfacing and wreaking havoc on his newly found happy and stable middle-aged life. Perhaps it's about his fear that his children will follow in his footsteps. And of course, all the guilt that comes with that.

"I feel sad that I don't even realize how lucky I am a lot of the time."
Obviously you do realize it.

Again, I would say that "happiness comes from within." I like to say that because I think it's true, but I hate sounding like a fortune cookie, lol. I know it's more or less common knowledge that money can't buy happiness, but I think NOTHING can GIVE you happiness. All the love in the world will do you no good if you don't love yourself, and I'm not trying to accuse you of not loving yourself, it's just about perspective. Happiness is achieved. Happiness is feeling self worth, which also means feeling deserving. It seems like you don't feel that you deserve the privileges you've been born into, and you certainly don't feel like you've earned them, and I think that's the problem. Like you said, mot of the things people strive to achieve or obtain in life you already have and were born into. So, maybe you feel like there's nothing for you to strive after, nothing for you to become or achieve, perhaps a bit purposeless. I can't tell you what to strive for, but I do believe that this search, this striving, this chasing dreams/goals is very significant and neccessary for happiness. Of course I don't know you personally, all I know of you is what words you write, but you seem to be very "down-to-earth" perhaps in spite of your privileged life, or maybe because of it. Self-esteem also appears to not really by an issue either. But either way, it seems like you're experiencing the meaninglessness of life. I'm the typical existentialist that believes that life is meaningless, but that we can give life meaning, yadda, yadda, yadda. So if you can figure out what life means to you, then you can know what ideal to chase after. Again, the words of Nietzsche come to mind, "Man would rather will nothingness than not will." We would rather chase and desire nothingness than no longer desire to chase. Also, I would say you shouldn't feel guilty for something you have no real control over, like being born into the family and circumstances you are. Be thankful, sure, but never guilty.

Yeah, "man is eternally alone." Learn to love yourself and you will always feel loved. Just be sure you know what love is before you do. Don't mistake it for arrogance or confidence or even feeling secure. It's much more about a simple appreciation of everything you are. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Learn to know yourself well so that you can discern your qualities and love them whole-heartedly. It's very difficult to receive love when you have no love for yourself. Love comes from within.

Marilyn Manson – Unkillable Monster Lyrics 10 years ago
The part about being a tightrope walker reminds me of the first part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche. Look it up if you're not familiar with it. Basically, the "tightrope walker" is used as a metaphor in the book where a jester (who is similar to Zarathustra) is able to leap over a man walking on a tightrope, where the rope is symbolic for man being the bridge to the Ubermensch. When the jester leaps over the man, the man falls to his death. It's like a parable. Zarathustra's goal is to lead man to reach his true potential as a species, to evolve into a better race. Zarathustra is urging man to hurry accross the bridge that will lead them to their ultimate supremacy, but in doing so many perish, because the bridge to the Ubermensch is a long and dangerous one, man must be surpassed.

I think it's about trying to end a relationship. About being the one to say goodbye and trying to end everything smoothly without hurting anyone's feelings, because you still love them, but for whatever reasons things just aren't going to work out. You try to give subtle clues that the relationship should end, but she doesn't respond (You refuse to die). You try to push her away, but she still doesn't just stay away. Instead she stays and calls you a monster for treating her this way. He dreams about being able to kill her (not literally, just to be able to make her go) without hurting her (the prettiest death I know). What he means by "my wound is a front door to you" is that his pain only makes her want to stay, because she feels sorry for him and guilty, instead of just leaving and ending his pain. "Am I my own shadow" shows that he is confused and is second guessing himself. The "shadow" is a term in Jungian psychology that refers to your inner, deeper, darker self; the dark side of you. He's saying "maybe I really am a monster, maybe she's right." The rest I think is pretty self explanatory.

Saul Williams – Grippo Lyrics 10 years ago
I think Saul's basically critiquing current hip-hop/rap music. I think the "substitute the anger and oppression....." part is saying that IF instead of glorifying anger and complaining about being oppressed so much in hip-hop/rap music they expressed guilt over having committed violence and talked about being depressed due to being oppressed they would get better results. Change may start to happen. They would be closer to heart, so to speak, about real issues and possible solutions, instead of just making it seem cool to tote a gun and just bitching about how hard it is growing up in the projects. I think the "violence is a metaphor...." part is referencing the metaphor in the previous sentence. "I purse my lips and kiss like a glock" is a metaphor that compares using words to fight to actual violence. I think the "Earthless" part is saying that the material world is worthless. It doesn't matter if you're god or man, you still have to deal with fear. I also always heard "change is inevitable, but object is not." Which would mean that, yes we do have to change, but what we change into or become is still determined by us. It also translates to whatever the world changes into is determined by us as well.

The White Stripes – The Hardest Button to Button Lyrics 10 years ago
Ok, I seem to get a different impression on this than most of you. Firstly, I always thought the correct lyric was "My MIND gave birth and we were checkin' it out." So I always got the vibe that the song was about some thought or some desire, if there even is a meaning to this song. Never noticed the Reagan reference. Makes me wonder if the idea had something to do with drugs, as Reagan is famous (or maybe infamous) for starting the "War on drugs." I don't know. It also occurred to me that it could be sexual because the "hardest button to button" could refer to the button on your pants. Metaphorically saying how hard it is to resist sexual temptation. It's hard to keep all your "lust" "buttoned" down and inside. Also the word "sleazy" cold have a sexual connotation. But then again, when he talks about his "brain" and "opinions" it makes me think it has something to do with some idea or concept that he had when he was a kid, but maybe the concept turned out to not be a good one, but it's still hard for him to keep from sharing it or trying to make it happen. I guess your guess is as good as mine.

Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out) Lyrics 10 years ago
Our philosophies are similar, but we also disagree on some points. Knowledge can be seen as a moral/immoral action, especially if the knowledge you seek is contrary to public, social, or religious opinion. Your questioning will be met with negative attitudes and feelings. Also, I think it's a big assumption that there are moral absolutes, although I believe there are. However, I believe that these absolutes would be very small in quantity and still be based on the particular individual's feeling. Like one absolute would be "the killing of someone innocent is wrong." I think just about everyone would agree with that, but it still depends on each person's idea of who is innocent. If someone can justify their actions, no matter how delusional they may be, they will believe they are not doing anything immoral. Also, you say that some aspects of love may be irrational but not illogical, but isn't it illogical to act irrationally? Also, I think exchange can cause feelings and beliefs in the opposite of meaning. Exchange is also what leads people towards pessimism and even things like suicide. In order for "meaning" to be constant it must be anchored to something constant as well, and not something as superfluous as other peoples opinions. Meaning should be tied to something you identify with in yourself. Whatever you perceive your "essence" as being. Meaning exists in however you define yourself. Your own standards, your own morals, your own thoughts; not in the reaction other people have to these. Also, your statement about all thought being creative depends on what you consider to be thought. I don't think that it's creative to think about what 2 + 2 equals, or how to spell a word, or to think about "tree" when I look outside and see one. Thought is creative when it comes from something internal and isn't just an automatic reaction to external stimuli. I also would add that love of self is extremely important in finding/deriving meaning, possibly more important than love of others.

Ok, I'm aware of what Thom said about this song so this is just a personal interpretation of it.

This song reminds me a lot of the short story "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury. Here's a link to where you can read it (it's only like 5 pages). http://mikejmoran.typepad.com/files/pedestrian-by-bradbury-1.pdf

Anyway, so to me this is about someone feeling isolated from the current society. He basically sees everything as being meaningless. Our houses, our machines, our lives. They will all come to an end. Ultimately everything is pointless, everything will eventually be swallowed whole and we will just fade out, along with all our petty possessions. It's about despair. And I know Thom states that this song has no light at the end of the tunnel, but the last two lives seem very optimistic to me and hopeful. Love is all we have and it's the ONLY thing that allows our lives to seem meaningful and purposeful. Love is the only thing that is worthwhile.

So what are the lyrics Aaron actually sings??

I hear:

We chase this fading light
We chase the tracks of time
And yet I fight (2x)
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
Ooohhhh....Ooohhh
Ooohhhh....Ooohhh
My gift of self is raped
My fallucy is great
And yet I find, Yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can be my own
I'd feel better dead
Ooohhh......Ooohhh
Ooohhh......Ooohhh

Death – Lack Of Comprehension Lyrics 10 years ago
Seems to me this is more about governments justifying war and creating things like atom bombs (In the molding of a life that creates it's destruction). It shows how governments will point the finger at everyone, but themselves for the reason they go to war. Fear is also the primary device governments use to justify their personal wars and to keep the citizens under control. This is the lack of comprehension, our inability to comprehend what's really going on, and this lack of comprehension is what the governement thrives on.

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah, you're right. I was referencing the popular, modern Christian interpretaion, or mis-interpretation, of Christian morality. Sex is something you would never talk about in church, well most churches, except for Ed Young, but sex isn't something you're supposed to talk about or even reference.

Chris Bell – You and Your Sister (acoustic version) Lyrics 10 years ago
The Buddhists were right when they came to the conclusion that all desire leads to suffering. No desire can be completely and eternally fulfilled or satisfied. Personally, I disagree with their ascetic perspectives and ways of dealing or coming to terms with this simple truth, I prefer to turn to more existential/humanistic thoughts for inspiration and guidance; Nietzsche especially. Actually a Nietzsche quote seems very appropriate. "Man would rather will nothingness, than to not will." The trick is to chase something that you will never catch and never tire of chasing; knowledge, truth, happiness, or whatever it may be. Typically non-physical pleasures are more satisfying and fulfilling than simple physical desires. No matter what, there is something inside of you that doesn't need to be given to make you feel whole, you only need to discover it and nurture it. Look into Aleister Crowley's idea of the "True Will" if you're interested, just don't buy into any of that other garbage he talks about.

Incubus – Diamonds and Coal Lyrics 10 years ago
This is what I was reminded of when I read these lyrics.

The Hammer Speaks

‘Why so hard?’ the charcoal once said to the diamond; ‘for are we not close relations?’

Why so soft? O my brothers, thus I ask them: for are you not – my brothers?

Why so soft, unresisting and yielding? Why is there so much denial and abnegation in your hearts? So little fate in your glances?

And if you will not be fates, if you will not be inexorable: how can you – conquer with me?

And if your hardness will not flash and cut and cut to pieces: how can you one day – create with me?

For all creators are hard. And it must seem bliss to you to press your hand upon millennia as upon wax,

Bliss to write upon the will of millennia as upon metal – harder than metal, nobler than metal. Only the noblest is perfectly hard.

This new law-table do I put over you, O my brothers: Become hard!
[From Thus Spoke Zarathustra,Friedrich Nietzsche, Part III, 'Of Old and New Law-Tables', with minor variants.]

Marilyn Manson – The Golden Age Of Grotesque Lyrics 10 years ago
Well, it seems a bit misleading to say that you hear "the pages of Nietzsche being opened and spun into lyrical form" if you're also going to affirm that it is a misinterpretation of Nietzsche's work to compare it with Nazism. Sure, you could MISINTERPRET Nietzsche's writings to the point where they seem aligned with these lyrics, but otherwise I don't see the similarity, or what you're even trying to say for that matter. You're saying that the lyrics seem very Nietzschean because they also seem very fascist/nazi-esque, but at the same time you agree that the true meaning of Nietzsche's writings would not support Fascism/Nazism. I wouldn't usually be such a prick to point out someone else's flawed and logically invalid comment, but you seemed to get rather defensive and sarcastic, so I figured why not.

The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics 10 years ago
Well, I never realized he said "you took a white orchid" I always thought he said "you took my orchid" and just had a little "uh" sound between "took" and "my." But using these lyrics it seems to be about a relationship, especially the part about being given a flower, an orchid is a flower. My guess is that he's really into this girl and does nice things for her like gives her flowers and even kisses her, but she acts oblivious that he's interested in her. What turns the orchid blue is her attitude. She takes something white, symbolizing innocence, purity, peace, love, and takes it to mean something else, turns it blue, symbolizing sadness, coldness, emotionless, etc. He asks her how old she is because she's acting immature, or at least really naive, which is also like how a child would act. The reaction she got was either him being into her, or him being mad and frustrated because she doesn't return his interests. He ties to do all these things to show her how he feels, but she just doesn't accept them for what they are, that's why there is no pleasing her and why she thinks that he's just teasing (joking with) her.
