St. Vincent – The Neighbors Lyrics 8 years ago
I feel like I'm late to the party! In a similar vein, I feel like this song addresses the idea of the perfect middle-class family during the 50's and 60's. During those times, threats like the Korean War and conflict with Russia and Cuba were on an all time high, and communist sleeper agents were a constant fear of American citizens. It was around this time that the idea of the perfect white middle-class family came to fruition. It was a way for the public to worry about pettier things than war or nuclear weapons. "Little Suzy on the X show just tracked mud into the house!" Shows like "The Brady Bunch" and "I Love Lucy" were loved by all for their portrayal of the average American home. But, as we all know, that wasn't the case. St. Vincent is trying to tell us that it's not always the best thing to employ "out of sight, out of mind" tactics like this, and it can actually have major issues if what's out of sight acts when it's out of mind. The chorus is my favorite part of this song, painting the image that everyone except the narrator is brainwashed into believing that everything will be alright as long as you don't think about it.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 11 years ago
Personally, I believe that it's "Roman Catholic choirs", not "Roman Cavalry choirs" for many reasons. If some of you didn't know, Viva La Vida is based off the French Revolution, specifically Napoleon and his conquests. Roman Cavalry choirs would not fit with the period, let alone the fact that Romans did not have cavalries, they had legions. Also, even if Romans had cavalries, what would be the point of having choirs in them. Makes no sense, right? People singing in the midst of savage warfare? I think not. Also, the mentioning of St. Peter and missionaries harks Roman Catholicism, not Romans. As for the switch from the singer's view of being king, this represents the alienation of Napoleon and his banishment to Elba because of the Coalition(referred to as revolutionaries in the song).

Stars – We Don't Want Your Body Lyrics 11 years ago
Personally, I think that this song is more literal than people make it out to be. Generally, speaking, The Five Ghosts album is pretty straight forward in that most of the song are about some sort of paranormal experiences, etc. So, bear with me. If taken literally, this song is about a serial murder-rapist who takes advantage of hookers, most likely in the early 1900's. Don't believe me? Here's the proof.
"Knock shop in Oxford Street"
A knock shop is basically a whore house.
"One where the vampires meet"
This line insinuates that the whore house is old and/or in an old part of town, most likely in a secluded place.
"Silk purse, pink tie and all of that. Platforms, white teeth, a stupid hat"
Lead singer is explaining the appearance of the hooker. She's young and take pride in her appearance, but not in her life.
"They really like to see you there. You make them think you really care"
Basically saying that she is a favorite of the whore house and that she is good at her 'job'.
"But I've watched you take your make-up off. Your face grows hard, Your eyes grow soft."
This lyric implies that the lead singer knows who the hooker is. He may have stalked her, etc. Also, it could be interpreted that the lead singer knew the hooker when he was younger.
"The window blinds are drawn. You flash your trash to turn me on."
The lead singer has now entered a room alone with the hooker and she is doing what she does best.
"I sigh and frown and start to cough. Your hunger starts to turn me off."
He is hesitating because he feels like he knows her now. But, like all serial killers, he has some sort of "tick". When he realizes that she has a thirst for sex and nothing more, he decides to go through with it.
"Lie down and try to talk to me"
He tells her that he isn't looking for sex and is actually just looking for someone to talk to. He wants to get her into a false sense of security.
"Sleep now and dream of who you'll be, When you finally become someone."
After a long night of talking, the hooker has fallen asleep. The lead singer is thinking of all of the ways to "correct" her ways, making her "finally become someone".
"You're tuned into my frequency, That don't mean a thing to me. Cause I don't want your body, I don't want your body"
Fast forward to the part where the lead singer "rapes" the hooker. More will be explained later.
"You sold me some cheap ecstasy, So you could have some sex with me. I don't want your body. I don't want your body."
This lyric is really good and will tie in with the lyric "We don't want your body."
"Face down upon the bar, I always said you'd get far. But you're not the kid you used to be, Someone should call your family."
Using this lyric, you can definitely say that the lead singer knew the girl in the past, probably as college friends/lovers.
The next four lines are the most haunting:
"White line, dead time, the chloroform"
This lyric is crazy. It shows the manic thought processes of an insane person. White line, as in a whit chalk line around a dead body, dead time, as in the fact that he killed her, the chloroform, after she fell asleep, he drugged her with chloroform.
"Flashbulbs which pop to keep you warm."
Creepy. Classic Stars lyric. The medical examiner has arrived and is taking pictures of her body. "Flashbulbs" give air to the antiquity of what is happening.
"I've watched you slowly fall away, The colours fade, from blue to grey."
He's talking about how he strangled her and watched as her body went cold.
"The window blinds undrawn, You flash some trash to turn us on. Your just a tramp, we're just a trick, Our hunger starts to make us sick"
This lyric solidifies the fact that she was his former lover. He is thinking back at all the memories of her.
"We don't want your body."
Basically, this implies that he has done this to other women as well. There are several layer of singing when this is sung, implying that he is a serial murder-rapist.
"You sold me some cheap ecstasy, so you could have some sex with me, I don't want your body. I don't want your body."
This is ANOTHER victim singing about what he did to her. He drugged her with ecstasy and then took advantage of her.

Now this may be a product of watching too much Criminal Minds, but I think this is pretty accurate.
