The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is definitely about suicide or thinking about suicide. What we never know is whether the guy in the song goes through with it in the end. It's more about longing to be somewhere else, longing to be somewhere better than the place you are. Eventually, the person thinks the only way out of their situation is to take their own life. They're that desperate to be in another world forever.

The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics 11 years ago
I genuinely think this song could kind of be about whatever you want it to be about, but I always saw it as a kind of story. It reminds me of adolescent angst and pain, and someone desperately wanting to embark on romantic/sexual relationships and therefore mature-"Will nature make a man of me yet?"-but somehow being a little behind and impatient.
This charming man-I'm not sure who that'd be. Maybe it is a stranger they meet. Maybe it represents someone they admire. But anyway, they point out that if you waste your time worrying about the future, you forget to live in the here and now, and there's no point spending all your time thinking if you neglect to realise the things around you. ("Why pamper life's complexity when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat")
The lines "It's gruesome that someone so handsome should care" could again refer to worrying about things that in the long run don't matter, like clothes, and looks. But this charming man might be suspicious in having all the answers and ultimately, the song might contain the idea that it's dangerous to blindly put all your faith in one person. The line "He knows so much about these things" could over time be more and more doubtful, and ultimately, the song may be saying that each of us has to make up our own minds about what to do with our lives, just as the guy in the song does-we can't keep relying on society or some charming stranger to sort out our futures, relationships, or as possibly hinted in the song, sexuality for us. (as I think there is a hint of homosexuality in the song)
Overall-maybe it's about someone struggling to enter romantic relationships while dealing with issues with his sexuality. He meets a charming stranger who could represent anything who seems to have all the answers, but begins to doubt him over time. While some of what the guy says makes sense (and it's hinted that he could be attracted to him, as the charming man may be advising him about his struggles with his sexuality), eventually the guy realises he can't base all his faith in one person, and he may have to come to terms with issues such as his sexuality and relationships himself. This is the thing that may lead him to maturity.
That's just my interpretation.

Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
To be honest, yeah, I know Nine Inch Nails made it about drug abuse, but Johnny sang it partly because it was so relative to his own life apparently. I didn't know he recorded it just a few weeks, before his wife died, PTCGAZ, thanks for the info. Sorry about your wife, I hope things work out for you.
Yeah, I think Johnny made this song pretty personal. I think everyone who's been through bad times can relate to it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Transcending Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm listening to this right now....and yeah, it's about River, but not as an actor, it's about him as Flea's friend. That makes it all the more personal, somehow.

Rufus Wainwright – Matinee Idol Lyrics 11 years ago
The song's about River Phoenix, Wainwright said so. Much-loved and much-missed actor.

The Velvet Underground – All Tomorrow's Parties Lyrics 11 years ago
Got to say, I love the opening to this. Sounds kind of mysterious, almost like the ending of something. I always thought the opening sounded like the beginning of a new era and the ending of an old one. It makes me feel happy and sad at the same time.
Not much lasts forever, I guess.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams Lyrics 11 years ago
This song speaks to loads of different people. To me, it always tells the story of someone looking back on a relationship that didn't work. They both lived in their fantasies of having the relationship work, when really it couldn't for whatever reason-differences in personalities, wanting different things, whatever. Anyway, it's them looking back on the relationship and still wondering, could it have worked out?
And wanting to go back to that time, even though the relationship didn't work out. Because they both cared about each other, but couldn't go on together.
Just my two cents.
