@[Grug88:5912] Although your comment is spot-on, I personally like the original London cast version better, perhaps because I heard that first. I had the pleasure of seeing Carl Anderson reprise his role as Judas Iscariot in a revival of JCS back in the 90's. He was amazing, even at his age. This song does set up the entire show and it is definitely my favorite from the production.

@[heyjude55:4226] Keith moon had a floor Tom Tom specifically for his drinks, like a side table. Often his drinks would spill due to his "drumming style". This causes the liquid you see exploding everywhere in this song.

The Clash – The Right Profile Lyrics 6 years ago
@[JeffKaos71:2535] You did know "From Here To Eternity" Is a famous 1953 war film starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine and Donna Reed, right? It won eight Academy Awards.I think the live Clash album may have taken the name from this. As a matter of fact, Red River, A Place in the Sun, the Misfits and From Here to Eternity are all films starring Mongomery Clift. The lyric is taken from the point of view of the EMT who arrived on the scene of a real car accident Clift had been in. "Say where have I seen this guy before?"

The Stranglers – Nice 'N' Sleazy Lyrics 7 years ago
While Hell's Angels do not wear "halos", they do wear "colours", tend to call each other "brother", are usually surrounded by "wine and women, song a plenty", and refer to their individual club as a "chapter".
A simple play on words. I hope this removes any doubt as to what this song is actually about.

Camera Obscura – The Sweetest Thing Lyrics 7 years ago
Sheer pop brilliance! This song makes you want to go fall in love and have your heart smashed into little pieces. The hook grabs you by the back of the neck and tosses you around the room like a rag doll. I do believe the song is a nod to Murdoch and his "lucid" line. Apart from Tracyanne, when Stuart write songs it is the "sweetest thing", so I see her point.

David Bowie – All the Madmen Lyrics 8 years ago
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest anyone? Turning point in the story is when the protagonist (McMurphy) realizes most of his fellow inmates in the asylum are free to leave whenever they want, but never do.
"I'd rather stay here with all the madmen then perish with the sad men roaming free."
"I'd rather play here with all the madmen, cause I'm quite content they're all as sane as me".

Classic coming of age song. Bitter-sweet.
It only has two parts, the chorus and the verse, but Neil doesn't need anymore than that, does he? The song brings you right there, sets the scene, and leaves. No more needs to be said. Brilliant really. The ability to say so much while using so few words.

Jellyfish – Sebrina, Paste And Plato Lyrics 8 years ago
This record 'Split Milk' has absolutely no business being as tremendous as it is. A phenominal album from a equally phenominal band. This is the best record that Queen, the Beach Boys, Supertramp, XTC and the Beatles never made. Every track front to back, not a dud in the bunch. If you enjoy those bands i meantioned, go out and buy this right now. Don't even read the rest of this comment. The drummer sings lead vocals while standing up and playing drums simultaneously. Go buy it, beg, borrow or steal it. It's simply that good.

Go back and listen to the song again with this in mind: The man is a junky. he blasts off, gets high and over doses. "your circuits dead... there's something wrong, can you hear me major Tom?" Brilliant in it's simplicity really, but that is all.
He even re-visits the theme and admits it in "Ashes To Ashes".

The Rolling Stones – Paint It Black Lyrics 8 years ago
No, no, no. You people are reading way too much into this. The lyric is quite simple. No drugs, no Vietnam, no affirmative action. The lyric is about the death of his girlfriend, and attending the subsequent funeral after.
The red door referrs to his heart, which he now wants painted black, as to never be opened again. The man is grieving here after all.
And the funeral:
"...line of cars painted black, with flowers and my love, both never to come back". How much Poe do you need?
Furthermore: "..i could not for-see this thing happening to you".. the protagonist blaming himself for not being able to help or stop the death from happening.
Painting it black is a metaphore for his mood and how he does not wish to be consoled, merely left alone to "fade away and not have to face the facts".
As far as the girls walking by in their summer clothes, they simply remind him of his loss and must therefore turn away, "...until my darkness goes".

I must say though I do have issue with incorrect lyrics posted at the end here.
It doesn't say ..."I want to see your face painted black"
the song simply says :
"I want to see it painted, painted black, black as night..."
And it does not say .."don't want to see the sun flying high in the sky..."
it says:
..."I want to see the sun blotted out from the sky".
If you listen with ear phones it is unmistakeable.
Again this man is crushed, he wants everything to be black to reflect his malaise.
