Ed Sheeran – The A Team Lyrics 11 years ago
White lips, pale face
Breathing in snow flakes
Burnt lungs, sour taste

The girl is clearly sick and depleted from drug use and hard lifestyle
Breathing in snow flakes because as she inhales the crack she also breaths in the cold elements outside as that's where she is forced to work due to her dependence

Lights gone days end
Struggling to pay rent
Long nights strange men

She never gets a break. When lights are gone at days end when most are resting she has long nights with strange men. She has no other way to pay for her addiction & keep the roof over her head.

And they say she's in the class A team
Stuck in her daydream
Been this way since 18
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking wasting
Crumbling like pastries

"THEY" say would indicate the objective judgementalistic oversimplified opinions about her rut & agonizing life & condition as voiced by ones who have known her since she was 18. This would most probably be her parents or family or life time child hood friends who witnessed the start of her plight. Her daydream is how they perceive her fogged, clouded, muffled explanations. She's alone. Nobody understands. Her face is crumbling like pastries would suggest that her face was cute attractive, delicately featured. It's not crumbling like plaster or any hardened substance but like a delicate, flaking pastry. When pastry flakes fall it seems like such a waste as they look and taste good but nobody can stop that from happening. She's losing her beautiful face to heroin use.

And they scream the worst things in life come free to us.

The worst things in life came free to her. The saying usually goes the best things in life are free & this refers to love & affection & all that genuine fellow feeling produces with regard to the recipient. The worst things in life were all that was free to her. She hasn't been shown love, care & nurturing. The only thing that came her way for free was exploitation in whatever forms of abuse that took.

Coz, we're just under the upperhand....go mad for a couple of grams.

She's totally in subjection to a force too strong for her. The power of her addiction, the need for her pimp's protection, & the money to pay her rent from men that only abuse her further. The upperhand is everything in her life that domineers her due to her need for heroin & everything that domineered her in her childhood also because that's ususally where the foundation was laid for such tragedy. That's where the path is set. She's trapped.

And she don't want to go outside tonight.
In a pipe she flies to the motherland.
Or sells love to another man.
It's too cold outside.
For angels to fly.

Contrary to what many think of this girl prostituting herself, it's not something she wants. She doesn't want to be outside in the cold then having a long night of it if she's "successful". The motherland is where we feel loved, safe, secure. She gets that from smoking as her reality is pain, hopelessness & isolation. She sells love to ANOTHER man suggests that the man telling the story loves her. Her life is so screwed she can't benefit from that. What force on earth could prevent an angel from being able to fly? There is none. But she feels the universe she occupies is so cold, devoid of morals, detestable to those that once loved her that nobody will come close. Not even an angel could fly here. SHE THINKS!

Ripped gloves, rain coat
Tried to swim & stay afloat
Dry house, wet clothes
Loose change, bank notes
Weary eyed-dry throat
Call girl no phone

Ripped gloves. She no longer has even simple items necessary to her survival in the environment she occupies. Dry house, wet clothes. She can't get any benefit from the house she manages to rent, due to the harshness of her addiction & subsequent problems. Loose change, bank notes. She has nothing. Loose change & bank notes get you nothing. Call girl no phone. She can no longer continue. She doesn't even have the basic requirements to be a call girl.

And she DON'T go outside tonight

It's too cold for angels to die

She wasn't the person she judged herself to be.
She was a lost girl that couldn't get back
Her observer saw what she was..........a worthwhile, beautiful, lost girl........
