Boz Scaggs – Georgia Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I'm not sure he's in jail for jail bait but he's definitely in jail! I think he did a robbery to get money for the two of them, i.e., "I did it all for you." Great song! |
Bruce Springsteen – Mary Queen of Arkansas Lyrics | 3 years ago |
In a concert I attended Bruce told us that this song referred to a drag queen. Revisit this line: You're not man enough for me to hate or woman enough for kissing. Surprised? My date that night was! |
Judee Sill – The Vigilante Lyrics | 4 years ago |
I'm reading a memoir by The Association's Russ Giguere and he talks about Judee Sill writing this song about him. She sang it on her second album, Heart Food in 1973. He said he learned he was the subject of the song after she died and a writer went though her journals. |

Steely Dan – What A Shame About Me Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[sheisler51:31432] I don't think you're right about the 2nd verse being the female. . Not when she had already said Hollywood's been good to me. But I guess you didn't need to hear that from a 3rd person |
Van Morrison – Bright Side Of The Road Lyrics | 8 years ago |

The Beatles – Blue Jay Way Lyrics | 9 years ago |
The name of the song comes from a street located high in the Hollywood Hills West, Los Angeles overlooking Sunset Strip where George Harrison rented a house at Blue Jay Way during August 1967. The home affords panoramic views of Hollywood and much of the Los Angeles Basin. It is located on a hillside of narrow, winding roads, difficult to navigate on a foggy night — thus creating the backdrop for the opening lines of the song: "There's a fog upon L.A., and my friends have lost their way." According to Harrison: "Derek Taylor got held up. He rang to say he'd be late. I told him on the phone that the house was in Blue Jay Way. And he said he could find it OK ... he could always ask a cop. So I waited and waited. I felt really knackered with the flight, but I didn't want to go to sleep until he came. There was a fog and it got later and later. To keep myself awake, just as a joke to pass the time while I waited, I wrote a song about waiting for him in Blue Jay Way. There was a little Hammond organ in the corner of this house which I hadn't noticed until then ... so I messed around on it and the song came." |
Antje Duvekot – Phoenix Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I think it must be written by a daughter whose mother either put her up for adoption or was there but didn't give her much attention or love Sad but by the end of the song we learn she became strong in spite of not having much of a mother's love or support. |
Emmylou Harris – Where Will I Be? Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I know my life will end someday. I wonder when it will happen and what I will be doing. I know my drug/alcohol (addiction) use may very well be what does me in. (last verse.) |
Johnny Cash – The Banks of the Ohio Lyrics | 9 years ago |
So surprising as the song takes its dark twist. Suzy Bogguss has recorded this now as well as her version is beautifully done, though surprising to hear the lyrics sung by a woman. |
The Deep Dark Woods – The Banks of the Leopold Canal Lyrics | 9 years ago |
This canal was a major line of German resistance during the Battle of the Scheldt in World War II. It is in Belgium. This man has to leave his woman to go serve in World War II. Beautifully done, the sadness is sweet. |
Kevin Welch – Bastard Nation Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I think it's about an illegitimate girl raised by loving parents who adopted her. Even though they love her their love cannot alleviate the lost feeling that she has of not knowing who her parents are. However, I did discover this from Wikipedia: England's Statute of Merton (1235) stated, regarding illegitimacy: "He is a bastard that is born before the marriage of his parents."[2] This definition also applied to situations when a child's parents could not marry, as when one or both were already married or when the relationship was incestuous. Under English law, a bastard was unable to be an heir to real property, in contrast to the situation under civil law, and could not be legitimized by the subsequent marriage of father to his mother. The Legitimacy Act 1926[5] of England and Wales legitimized the birth of a child if the parents subsequently married each other, provided that they had not been married to someone else in the meantime. In the United States, in the early 1970s a series of Supreme Court decisions held that most common-law disabilities imposed upon illegitimacy were invalid as violations of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Many other countries have abolished by legislation any legal disabilities of a child born out of wedlock. None of this probably mattered one bit to the girl in the song, however. |
Willie Nelson – Back to Earth Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Lyrics read above: Love created songs that I still sing. Love we knew still makes the rafters ?red?. should be: makes the rafters ring. This is a song about going from heavenly exciting love to back to earth's position of "I am not loved by this person anymore." Sad song, beautifully expressed. |
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Frozen Smiles Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I'm reading Graham Nash's wonderful memoir _Wild Tales_ and this is what HE has to say about this song: "I wrote this for Stephen (Stills) because he was too busy listening to people who filled his nose rather than his heart." p198 The four guys of CSN&Y loved one another but had very tumultuous relationships. This book is a MUST READ if you grew up and loved their wonderful music. |
Iron & Wine – Monkeys Uptown Lyrics | 10 years ago |
But no one likes a beggar slightly overdressed How true! haha Just a fun song to listen to... |
Joan Osborne – Axis: Bold As Love Lyrics | 10 years ago |
axis: An alliance of powers, such as nations, to promote mutual interests There are some wrong words in these lyrics, such as trophies of war, not horror. I love all the color references in this song with the word rainbow at the end. This is about the passions of new love with a jealous lover. |
Kiki Dee – amoureuse Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This came out when I was a young woman and a song that so obviously addressed a girl losing her virginity was amazing! It's just a beautiful song with heartfelt lyrics. Still love it even after all these years. |
Alexi Murdoch – At Your Door Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This song is from Towards the Sun, the second album released by Alexi Murdoch. (Released March 8, 2011.) According to Alexi, all seven tracks were recorded on a tape player during a tour stop in Vancouver in 2009 and were not intended to be on an album. Six months later, after listening to the songs on the tape, he found "something undeniably so straightforward about it" that he began work on enhancing the songs in a basement studio. This song was included in an episode of Gossip Girl. The song seems clearly about someone in love with a girl who is ambivalent or frightened about the emerging feelings. He is reassuring her of his love and stability. Right? |
Steely Dan – Any Major Dude Will Tell You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I had never heard of a squonk before. Looking it up on Wikipedia I found it's a legendary creature whose skin is all covered w/warts and consequently hides in plain sight and cries. It evades capture by dissolving completely into liquid by weeping. I love the literary elements these guys bring to their music! |
Michael Franks – Antonio's Song (the Rainbow) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This is from one of Michael Franks's earliest albums. Years later in 1995, he returns to Antonio to say goodbye. _ Abandoned Garden_ was recorded after the death of Antonio Carlos Jobim and is dedicated to him. "You were my inspiration, my hero, my friend..." That song sent me back to this early song: Ah! That was who he was writing about here! Lovely. |
Al Stewart – Angel of Mercy Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Wouldn't it be funny if he wrote this about the internet? Or one of those infamous web romances ala Catfish? Webs of fantasy (the web) Spaced invader ... of my privacy...tricky trader...I just noticed the phrases linked to our modern world of internet and it made me wonder...what was he thinking when he wrote this song? |
Boz Scaggs – Look What You've Done to Me Lyrics | 11 years ago |
There are two versions of this. On Boz's Greatest Hits the version has the Eagles singing background. For Urban Cowboy, the Eagles' voices were removed and female voices were inserted. Which one do you like better? |
Sheryl Crow – Angel Mine Lyrics | 11 years ago |
These are not the lyrics to Angel Mine. Angel Mine is written by Hank Williams. Here are the lyrics: Sheryl Crow - Angel Mine Lyrics Artist: Sheryl Crow Album: Miscellaneous Genre: Rock Send "Angel Mine" Ringtone to your Cell Listen while you read! God must have known that I was lonely And no contentment could I find For one day right out of heaven He sent me you, angel mine Now my heart is always singing Songs of love so divine It will never, a-get no sorrow Since I've found you, angel mine I can never tell the world, dear Of your love so true and kind Oh, how thankful I am for you You are my life, angel mine I can never tell the world, dear Of your love so true and kind Oh, how thankful I am for you You are my life, angel mine, a, angel mine I just want to live and love you Always be your clinging vine There could never be another Sweet as you, angel mine There could never be another Sweet as you, angel mine There could never be another As sweet as you, angel mine |
Harry Nilsson – All I Think About Is You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I agree! I began looking up the writer of this song because it had the feeling of one of the classics circa 30's or 40's. Nilsson really captured the feeling of the old melodic beautiful tunes. Sorely missed. |
Elvis Costello – All These Strangers Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Jealousy is aroused in the second verse when he sees his lover with another man. And he studies the strangers that he sees from his window as he paints. Some of the above words are wrong. Here is a careful transcription of the lyrics. "Mistreat me darling and I might just disappear Upon a freighter running dark out of Algiers Put tiny grains in children's tears While taking 25% of all those flashbulbs and mementoes From the mechanized divisions rolling over your frontiers.” I saw my baby talking to a man to day Speaking softly in a confidential way I saw a shadow pull his glove off As a bluebird flew over Life's no pleasure When you doubt the one you love Who Are All These Strangers? I never will go back again Go back into the past The flood is rising fast You can break the window and look down Into the muddy glass Where it's mirror or a lens to burn... Now there was a deal done in Benghazi and Belgrade... Upon a scimitar or other crooked blade Ransacks and loots, vacated suits And a pistol points but never shoots, an army sitting in a locomotive yard without their boots Upstairs your man is painting rain out in the street Imagines women that he's destined still to meet He's trying to sidetrack one to count on Caught somewhere between a countess and a courtesan There’s only love to feign and then it's gone. Who Are All These Strangers? He's a privateer as dusk gets near A brigand after dark, his victim lined with chalk A corsair, filled with horsehair to the core There’s ? eyes on Adamantine, you despised this stripling whine That little smudger and the mouthpiece that he's with Using his claws just like a practiced fingersmith I dreamed I took his digit prints And then I sewed them on a villain's hands and Watched him ransom and demand and then called the flatfoots in I never will go back again Go back into the past For the flood is rising fast You can break the window and look down Into the muddy glass For it's a mirror or a lens to burn... Who Are All These Strangers? All These Strangers Sat down on a narrow bed Thought about the things she said All These Strangers How I wished the night would end Try to stop the days ahead I'd carve her name down in the wood Some small remembrance if I could. |
Iron & Wine – Me and Lazarus Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The references to holes in pockets would speak to the fact that junkies go through their money so fast! |
Iron & Wine – Me and Lazarus Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This verse seems strikes me as a drug reference: using the spoon to mix injectables, cotton poisoning a side effect from shooting...lasts sooo long! Me and Lazarus, we fiddle with a baby spoon Fever flowing through the room Far too long and way too soon |
Iron & Wine – Me and Lazarus Lyrics | 11 years ago |
not choir rose...choir rows! |
Tift Merritt – After Today Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I read that this song was written after having conversations with a person who worked as a juvenile public defender with inner city kids. Tift was giving a voice to those young adults. |
