Iron Maiden – Hallowed Be Thy Name Lyrics 9 years ago
Just a quick correction, the line should be:

"If there's a God then why has he let me 'die'?"

Bruce Springsteen – The River Lyrics 9 years ago
This is a powerful and emotional song by The Boss himself. Many songs include metaphors or literal lyrics and I can understand some of the previous comments.

Personally, to me it seems to be a mix of both. Where the narrator is telling his story today and 'The River' is a memory, that he visits when times are bad. The River symbolises 'him and Mary' as one.

Without breaking down the whole song, that night at the river is when they made love for the first time, Mary got pregnant, they got married. The River is a place where they went, madly in love with each other, and it's like nothing else mattered when they were there.
In the present, they're not happy together hence "although the river is dry", but he still remembers the place as a happy memory, which is all that's left of their relationship.

That's my interpretation anyway...

Iron Maiden – The Assassin Lyrics 9 years ago
Not sure of the meaning or particualr influence for this song, but ive got to say, as a massive Maiden fan, this to me is one of their poorest efforts. Musically it's alright, but lyrically it just feels very lazy/thrown together and settled with at the last minute. The singing in general is ok, but i feel Bruce could have gone that extra step.

In all honestly the whole No Prayer for the Dying album has a lot lacking - It's a mix of Steve's 'Maiden' songs and Bruce's 'classic rock solo' work. There's no real structure to the album. Some songs are catchy and good overall.. e.g. Tailgunner... that is a typically awesome Iron Maiden song, but in general it's not a great album and the fact that they never play anything off it shows that the band feel the same. Luckily they redeemed themselves with the follow up album Fear of the Dark.

The song 'Black Gives Way To Blue'. Now that is AiC's most beautiful song. It might not feature Laynes voice but it's about him.

You play it frequently but it's the worse rock song ever? Obviously because that makes perfect sense...

Personally i frequently listen to songs that i actually like

Iron Maiden – Lord of Light Lyrics 11 years ago
Watch the making of 'a matter of life and death', which came with most of the cds. Bruce explains that the song is about the life and intensions of Lucifer.

Lucifer literally meanings 'The Light-Bringer'.

The Lord of Light is one of many names that Lucifer is known by.

Bruce Dickinson – Born in '58 Lyrics 11 years ago
This is an amazing song, one of the best on the album.

As im from Nottingham (although i was born in 85) i feel a connection to the song and im proud that Bruce was born and raised here... so was John Parr for that matter, no relation to me though, as far as im aware.

Meat Loaf – I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song!!

The things he won't do are simple... they're in the lyrics.

And you'll see that it's time to move on....
I won't do that

(He won't leave her)

And sooner or later, you'll be screwing around...
I won't do that

(He won't cheat on her)

*Air guitar greeting*

Like most people, I heard it from Bill & Ted during the classic 'in the future' scene.

Great song, great lyrics and vocals

Also, the lyrics are "Don't you know I just can't last".

Kinda obvious when it rhymes with 'fast'

Great cover, love the extented guitar intro!

Always comes on just before Maidens intro music at a show, so it acts as a good cue to prepare yourself (and grab a last minute beer of course)

Sum 41 – Dear Father Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song and a lot of people can relate to it, including me. Although i know who my dad is, he wasn't there when i was growning up and ive only seen him once since when i was around 19.

With a lot of songs, its possible to interperate the lyrics to various meanings, but i really really do not get the previous comment on it being about obesity. Ive just been staring at the lyrics and theres just nothing that can point to it in any way. But hey 'torrentomike', if thats what you feel from the song then who am i to judge, just quit calling people fucking ignorant just because you dont agree with the meaning that 99% of us think it is

Killswitch Engage – In Due Time Lyrics 11 years ago
The album KSE II was in my opinion only 'ok'. There were some decent songs but as a whole it just didnt stand out like the ones before. However the new album is amazing and in particular this song. I loved Howard as a singer but i think bringing Jesse back was needed and brought a new freshness to the band.

First heard this song when the video was released and immediately thought "sounding good", but when the chorus hit i swear i got chills. That line 'All In Due Time' and the way Jesse sings it is pure passion and clearly shows that he means what he's singing.

As for meaning.. i think in general its a message of 'theres a light at the end of the tunnel'. I've been able to relate to this in recent months and its all about enduring the bad by knowing that 'in time' the good will come.

Amazing song, amazing album

Cascada – Because the Night (Patti Smith Group cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
Not my sort of thing usually but this isnt a bad version. Although I personally feel it lacks the real emotion from the original, which was written by Bruce Springsteen and Pattie Smith (who each have there own versions)

Cheap Trick – The Flame Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song isn't specific to either a breakup or death. There was probably something that the lyrics relate speficially to for the writer, but i think in general it applies to losing someone that you'll always love, no matter what.

For me personally, ive been through break ups (earlier this year i found out my GF of 4 years had been seeing my band mate/housemate behind my back, it was a messy situation as you can imagine) but i dont apply this song to that. To me this is a song about my mum, who im thankful to say i still alive. It sounds strange but although i love this song, it makes me think about how life will be when my mum isnt going to be here anymore.

Hopefully people wont get any sick ideas about what im trying to say here, but the lyrics 'you were the first, you'll be the last'... My mum is the first woman i ever loved and has always been there for me, and always will (always a flame when life gets dark).

I see myself talking in the verses and my mum speaking back to me in the chorus.

Errm.. its not a rule in music that the words have to rhyme (or even half rhyme) to be "good" lyrics.

Amazing song with an epic chorus!!

Correction to the lyrics 'And I'm banging every nun' though - its night, not nun. To be honest i though it was nun, so I checked the lyrics in the album sleeve and its def 'night'.

Killswitch Engage – When Darkness Falls Lyrics 11 years ago
Heres the thing.... people feel this song could be about Christianity, this is fair enough because you only get that impression, but there are others who state that it IS about Christianity, which is wrong to assume. True some members of the band are Christians, but does that make them a "Christian" band? The lead singer (Tom) of Slayer is a Catholic, are Slayer a "Catholic" band then? If you can state they ARE then please provide a source... interview etc.

I'm not particularly religious, but i can see and hear things in lyrics from all different bands that could have been influenced by religion, but i can also see other things as well. Take this song, i feel its more about overcoming something bad in your life.. maybe a bad breakup or the death of a loved one. Also the lyrics are "when darkness falls, we are reborn"... as in darkness 'comes' not goes away.

Or you could go with the alternative..... It's likely not the case, but having seen KSE live a few times they give an explanation on the song: "this is a song about when Howard falls over".. which is just funny! But technically that is the closest source on what its about.

Fleetwood Mac – Songbird Lyrics 11 years ago
Although this seems like a sad, goodbye song - its actually not. On 'classic albums - Rumors' Christine confirms that the song is her personal message to the rest of the band, because of everything that was going on at the time (her and Johns divorce, Stevie and Lindseys break up and Micks divorce). She was basically telling them that after even after everything, she loves them all and wishes them all the best in their lives.

The Pogues – Fairytale Of New York Lyrics 11 years ago
My fave xmas song ever. Just something about it that sticks out from the 'usual' xmas songs, its a fairytale about love and heartbreak. I think a lot of the previous comments have got parts right as to what they're about, but i thinks its mainly to guy and girl remembering their time together. heres what i think:

Guy wins on the horses so goes out celebrating, feeling lucky he thinks of her and hopes they'll be back together in the new year ("ive got a feeling this years for me and you"),
Becomes too drunk and ends up in the cells, *Next im assuming its her that bails him out and they're now sat talking, probably in a coffee shop trying to sober him up*. They remember when they met and how in love they were - But im thinking they both were/or became addicted to drugs so everything when wrong, so they had a massive break up (hense the insults). The last verse seems to them telling each other how they feel now, how he never forgot what he 'promised' her and, as the lyrics go, how he kept her dreams with his own.

I think all the choruses except for the last one refer to the past, but the last one is them now. They end up in the same place: early xmas day, bells ringing, choir 'STILL' singing. just like before. So maybe they start over again.

- So thats what I think its about, all in all its an amazing/emotional song.

Thin Lizzy – The Holy War Lyrics 11 years ago
First one! Actually shocked that no one else has put anything for this, it's one of Thin Lizzy's greatest songs that didn't become a single. Well.. meaning-wise, it's pretty much explained in the title and lyrics - The song is about the faith, good and evil, and the war/arguement between whether you should believe in god or not. Simple
