HIM – Wings of a Butterfly Lyrics 10 years ago
Here's what Ville said in an interview about the song: "No, I read about some ancient myth or legend - I can't remember but it wasn't a Finnish one - saying that immortal souls have the wings of a butterfly."

"So I was thinking, for me, it was more about ‘rip out the wings of a butterfly for your soul'. I was thinking: 'Are you willing to destroy your past and burn some bridges down to be able to step up to the next level, in a relationship or even spiritually?"

No artist does that--songs are poems set to music and all poems have meaning. Besides, Ville himself has said that these songs reference certain events in his life and many of them were about the suicide of a friend--look it up my friend and thank me later.

Whoa. I really love your interpretation. Good job. Oh and I think the person in question was male--but I could be wrong so don't quote me on that. I vaguely recall an interview where Ville referred to him as "he"....

I think Ville is examining the nature of betrayal in general--how we can be capable of doing things to hurt others that cause us to "bleed well" in the end. Sexual betrayal is an allegory.

Oooor I could be totally off base and he is completely talking about a chick cheating on her boyfriend :-p

I think there is an indication that it may not be literal "lusts" he is referencing but a different kind of betrayal--but I could be wrong.

I look at their albums this way--each one has a different feel and tone --different mood. I am so glad they don't try to bring the same ole same ole every CD. I love them all--even Screamworks.

I agree--and take it up a notch to, Ville is also convicting himself of this treason cause he says "We're bleeding well in hell" It may not even be sexual betrayal per se--not sure what it is referencing, but he goes along for the ride and feels guilt for it as well.

Couldn't disagree more--I love the fact that an established band was willing to take risks. Far too many bands cynically try to play it safe to keep making money. Real artists will try different things--including sing high note all over the place. This is one of the main reasons why I will fork over money to see them in concert every album release--and why I Will buy a CD of music note unheard--they are geniuses and they are always surprising me. Love every CD for different reasons.

Taylor Swift – Mean Lyrics 11 years ago
This is an addendum to an earlier comment someone made as well regarding the fact that Taylor Swift had some so called mean songs herself. First of all, she also has a lot of cute love songs--but her music, like most artists, run the gambit from sweet to tough to introspective and names no one in particular. Besides, do they think her music was somehow different than other artists? To such commentators, I would challenge you to post ten artists you currently like and I'd bet that at least one of them has a break up song, or a screw the world song. These songs are far from bullying and far different from the nastiness Taylor Swift endured at the hands of a critic who should have left his critique to the music itself and not initiated a personal, aimed attack. Music reflects ALL the emotions of love which include heartbreak and anger ESP country. NO one has the right to tell that girl how to emote or vent about her own Personal experiences--and obviously her music struck a chord and is popular which is probably what most of the haters are really upset about.Giving Taylor Swift crap for what thousands of other artists--from Hank Williams to Fleetwood Mack ( Lindsey Buckingham sent Stevie many a "love note" such as GO YOUR OWN WAY during the years the band was together) shows your obvious biases. If you don't personally like Swift fine, you don't have to buy or listen to her songs, but at least try to come up with some stuff that makes sense.

Not a big Taylor Swift fan but this song struck a chord with me and I like it. While I was never bullied per se, I have had folks put me down and trash talk me--who hasn't. The negative emotions she experiences and displays are NORMAL reactions to being mentally harmed and shows her to be human like the rest of us. Those holier than thous who would have us act like Angels in the face of bullying are deluded and don't live in the real world. Real world humans get sad, angry and even depressed when they are hurt--and Taylor IMHO, had ever right to get pissed off. She is also still young and growing--time will help her balance a lot of her ideas and emotions and put them in proper perspective. I stand up, applaud and say bravo to this Miss for her cheekiness. She put bullying in perspective for young victims and told them it is okay to be angry, and yes, a little bit vindictive. What this does is help them vent--and get it out. In the end, this may enable some victims to move on as opposed to being pushed into silence by those who simply can't be bothered with adolescent hurts in life. The alternative is to keep it all bottled up, the good and the bad, where their emotions spill over--sometimes with deadly consequences.

why would you be sympathetic to someone kicking you in the face? That doesn't even make sense.... And I am sure you get all rosy and loving when you think of all the people who have hurt you in life? Yeah, way to trash someone you don't know and devalue their emotions. This song is HONEST and tells people that those who pick on other probably have been put down and want to dish out on weaker souls. The people claiming not to understand this song are more likely bullies themselves who want their victims to further marginalize themselves by not standing up--I say bravo kiddo--wish more had the guts to tell these jerks off as opposed to running off to tell teacher. TS, Keep keeping on little sis. A PS--Its Taylor's life and emotions--she can bitch all she wants to no matter how petty you deem it to be. Dislike it all you want, but don't tell people how they should emote over their OWN experiences. It's not like she killed the guy, she simply vented her frustrations from HER perspective. You just seem like one of those emotionally stunted individuals who would tell their kid to suck and up and not cry as opposed to letting expose even their more negative emotions so they can move on. How would you like it, for example, if I told you never to talk about your bullying experiences, or to only speak in kind tones about your bullies? We don't even know if the song is about one bully in particular anyway...as for taking criticism--sure--but you'd be super human if it NEVER got to you--being an artist doesn't make you invulnerable--in fact--you tend to be more sensitive than most. Her getting that out was brave cause she had to know folks like you would put her down for her honesty. The song helped others put bullying in perspective and tell them it is okay to have nanny nanny boo boo feelings have bout the experience. You don't like Swift, fine, but I am not sure why you want to comment on her work?

They didn't simply say they didn't like her song--they called her stupid and said a bunch of nasty, bullying style things that had nothing to do with music. One can say they dislike something but is trash talking and name calling young lady whose only crime is to sing songs you don't personally like, is that called for? I am sick and tired of people standing up for bullying behavior and only shaking their heads when some one has enough and either killed themselves or others. I'd rather she vent her anger and tell other kids "Hey, this person is probably just angry and in the end you may end up the victor". It is a GREAT and HONEST message--and hey--haters who spew hate need to be prepared to get some back.

I think it sucks that ppl are trying develop a mindset where when a victim takes a stand they are then called a bully--we are creating a nation of victims who need to rat other folks out to grow up. Her mind set here is perfect--she understands the motivations behind their nastiness and is calling them out on it--she'd be the one who is being MEAN if she was messing over folks without justification or just out of the blue. People who spew negativity and nastiness can't get pissed off when they get some of it back.

Culture Club – Karma Chameleon Lyrics 11 years ago
The generally watered down and accepted concept of Karma is the "What goes round comes around principle" and when one learns of the supposed sordid affair between BG and his drummer you can see how this, among other Culture Club tunes are about this starcrossed doom tryst. George is essentially telling dude that playing games with his heart is going bite him in the ass--he is also saying he is a chameleon--one time sweet the next time acting as if he doesn't exist. Reportedly, Boy George tried to commit suicide the day the drummer came out on British TV with his wife and baby to tell the world he and George never had an affair...

@Jeffery the 80's birthed THE CURE, OINGO BOING, DEPECHE MODE, TEARS FOR FEARS , PET SHOP BOYS and several other groups that turned out socially significant songs. It was a cotton candy era in many ways--but pop music has always drowned out the meatier bands in nearly all music eras. Madonna and Prince stood out because they were outlandish but Boy George's tunes were hardly fluff--As he admitted, his songs are about love and loss in regards to his affair with the band's drummer. To this day the drummer has claimed the affair never happened--if you listen to all the words of BG's songs, as well as the sorrow and pain in his voice, I'd say that drummer is lying.

Culture Club – Karma Chameleon Lyrics 11 years ago
No he meant Karma--the songs, just like DO YOU WANT TO HURT ME and TIME (CLOCK OF THE HART) were about his love for his drummer whom he claims to have had an affair with for years. Karma (what goes around comes around) Chameleon (he changes his colors a lot). If you look at the lyrics of all three songs he is telling the man to come out publicly about their love--and that the man appears to be telling him what he wants to hear just to have sex with him.
