Echo and the Bunnymen – Nocturnal Me Lyrics 8 years ago
@[philipkindred:7532] This info about Ian McCulloch going to Greenland explains so much about this album and the aesthetic of the songs! I've always thought this album was supposed to be a conceptual album, and even though it's not the inspiration for the album promotes so many of the ideas I had when first listening to the album.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Nocturnal Me Lyrics 8 years ago
I've always seen this album as a concept album for some reason, despite it not intensionally being one at all. But every time I listen to this album, especially this song and 'The Yo Yo Man' I think of a ship in the 17-1800s on the way to an icy barren country, the north pole for example, but has crashed, leaving the protagonist to deal with his fallen colleagues. There is so little information out there about this album and it's conceptual intentions, but I love reading these interpretations. Needless to say this is a very theatrical and atmospheric album, and the aesthetic of the album artwork only promotes this idea of sailing to an icy wasteland. Someone commented on here that Ian McCulloch wrote these lyrics whilst on a trip to Greenland, which answers so many questions! Seeing as this isn't a conceptual album, the other interpretations about it being about love and lust seem more relevant, and despite not noticing these connotations initially, they also make so much sense. I love this album so much!

Gerard Way – Drugstore Perfume Lyrics 9 years ago
The other comment seems to very much sum up the song, and a nice meaning it is too. I just want to note the imagery he uses in the lyrics. You can tell this is one of the Britpop influenced songs, well, Pulp influenced anyway. The sparse and mundane description of where the character of the song is reminds me of the whole Kitchen Sink style lyrics Pulp and Suede sometimes use. Even the name 'Drugstore Purfume' reminds me of an American version of British council estate (or something along those lines). Gerard said Hesitant Alien is very much an American Britpop album, this song in particular seems to encapsulate that.

So yeah, a song about escaping your roots/social mobility and finding your dreams, not letting other people shit all over you and believing in yourself. Whoop!

Gerard Way – Millions Lyrics 9 years ago
Gerard always uses a lot of escapism in his lyrics, imagery of running away with a loved one. However, you can't just say that this is one of his love songs as the lyrics tend to contradict themselves. There's a subtle use of violence, but it sounds too playful to be a breakup song. But there is a sense of retribution here as the line in the first half that says 'my mouth is sore' changes near the end of the song to 'I think you're sore'. Then there's the whole idea of having a million reasons, a million reasons for what? To love someone, to hate someone, to split a band up? I think a bit of context is needed to really be able to analyse what the song's about, I'm too lazy.

BUT, the line 'William it was really me, it was really you' is a reference to The Smiths's song 'William it was Really Nothing', which is believed to be a song about someone Morrissey slept with? The Smiths reference is very discrete, so possibly not a huge part of the song. Maybe the song has something to do with regret or making mistakes?

Gerard Way – Brother Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is most likely to be about Mikey, hense it's called 'Brother'. Even if it's not about Mikey, it's about/to someone who has acted like a brother to him. Lot's of imagery of sleeping on couches in the city, could be about early MCR days when they'd probably have to live rough. Even if it's not that, the idea of being a brother to someone, letting them sleep on the couch when they need to, supporting someone when they haven't got anything. High chance that the song is about Mikey as there's reference to going to gigs 'we would hear them play'. Makes me think of when Mikey and Gerard saw the Smashing Pumpkins in Madison Square Gardens NYC. Perhaps when either one of the Way brothers had depression the other would support them through letting them stay round?

David Bowie – Conversation Piece Lyrics 9 years ago
The lyrics are self explanatory, but the question for me is whether Bowie wrote this song from the perspective of a fictional character or himself. Obviously Bowie didn't kill himself so from that argument you could say it's from a character viewpoint. Also it's well known that Bowie is able to create and write songs from the perspective of made up characters. However, I'm not sure if he actually lived above and Austrian's grocery store, but if he didn't, the idea of placing false details into the song sounds like a strategy to prevent people from assuming the song's about Bowie himself. I mean, there's a lot of emotional and observational detail in this song that would be too difficult to come up with alone without experiencing it. I relate to this song immensely, so the idea that Bowie actually felt like an outcast wrote a song about it sounds lovely to me.

My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words Lyrics 9 years ago
My interpretation of the song has completely changed since writing that essay of a comment years ago. The whole bull shit I wrote about the song being about a split in a relationship... I think was 14 when I wrote that, eep! I just see the song as a positive ending, a happy conclusion to what is often seen as a depressing album. To me, the message is something among the lines of 'keep calm, carry on' (to put it in a straightforward and unemotional way). Mikey was definitely the inspiration for the song, not an ex-girlfriend.

Bauhaus – All We Ever Wanted Was Everything Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree with everyone's interpretations of the song being about Bauhaus growing up in Northampton- 'barbed wire', 'Factorytown'. This song is in a way similar to Bowie's Life On Mars song - sorry for another Bowie comparison, Bauhaus. But, instead of asking 'is there life on Mars?' (I wish I could move away, Mars is better than England), it goes on about the desire to escape through fame ('All we ever wanted was everything'). I mean, considering this is from their last album, where the band's split was being seen as almost inevitable at the time (I imagine), the song to me sounds like a reflection on Bauhaus's original motives in comparison to their feelings after releasing 3 well received albums. I think the 'All to be the cream' part refers to the idea of wanting to be the 'creme de la creme' (best of the best), which was most likely one of the bands original desires. That line, and the whole song in general, sounds like it's written from a retrospective viewpoint, suggesting that in their early years, Bauhaus were naive, and that towards the end of their musical career, their motives changed.

The Beatles – Dear Prudence Lyrics 10 years ago
I just think it's ironic that her name was Prudence and was prudish. I initially heard this song as the Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover, and always thought it was about enticing someone who is sexually prude... Maybe not, still a great song though!

David Bowie – The Stars (Are Out Tonight) Lyrics 10 years ago
Generally I've seen this album as a way of Bowie reflecting on his past. In the music video Iselin Steiro is the young Bowie, who moves in next door to contemporary Bowie and acts as a ghost of his past self. The two celebrities who seem to stalk Bowie and Swinton's characters in the video (who seem to be in a lot of trouble from the magazine Bowie picks up at the beginning of the video) might also be a reflection of Bowie's darker past, perhaps from his drug addictions? Either way, I definitely think that this song is about the obsessions with celebrities in the media and how they seem more than human to their fans. Maybe this song is to Bowie's fans as a way of saying 'I'm human, just like you'.

Anyway, pretty much from the 80s onwards I think Bowie has been obsessed with his past, often refurring to his previous well known hits (example. Ashes to Ashes's reference to Space Oddity, Hallo Spaceboy's reference to Space Oddity etc.)

My Chemical Romance – Thank You For The Venom Lyrics 10 years ago
Just wanna say. Gerard was RAISED Catholic, he isn't one today. As a teenager he started to question what he and his family believed in. He does however believe in a form of God, but he doesn't follow any religion.

There are a lot of Catholic images in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, so there is a chance that this song is about religion and not being Catholic even though his family at the time (his parents and close family, not LynZ and B). However, this song could be about multiple things, as everyones interpretations have shown.

Either way, I believe that whatever the subject of this song is, this song is telling someone to fuck off and let MCR be who they are. No matter what people will do to corrupt their ideas, they will stay true to their own personal beliefs.

My Chemical Romance – Desolation Row (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
You seem to know a lot more about Watchmen and Bob Dylan than I do, but I thought that the bit that says:

Now at midnight all the agents
And the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone
That knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory
Where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders
And then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles
By insurance men who go
Check to see
That nobody is escaping to
Desolation Row

was written by My Chemical Romance themselves and the rest of the song was written by Bob Dylan. That part does sound like something that Gerard would write..?

My Chemical Romance – Cubicles Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about someone working in an office, living a dismal life with a boring job. But they fancy someone who has an office cubical 2 cubes down from him. He really likes her and can't stop thinking about her. The only view the office building has is a grey stained window, so he spends his time trying to write love notes and trying to figure out a way to tell her that he likes her. He also fantasises being with her, and doesn't have many friends. He doesn't talk to his co-workers ('spend my time with strangers') and the character in the song sounds generally very lonely.

One day the girl he has a crush on leaves and works somewhere else, leaving a 'vacant 3 by 4' office cubical. The main character gets depressed, and says how the bosses will just replace her with 'a temporary stand-in for [her] face'. He realises that with his lack of social skills and the woman of his dreams gone, he will hopelessly die alone.

My Chemical Romance – Helena Lyrics 11 years ago
I shouldn't have to explain that this song is about Gerard and Mikey's grandmother, Elena dying. I'm not going to analyse the lyrics, but I just wanted to say something.

Their grandmother was called Elena Lee Rush, but the song is called Helena. I think this is because they wanted to respect her name and were worried that relatives might of been offended if they used her real name.

The other reason could be because the Misfits have a song called Helena and they wanted to called the song Helena like the Misfits. I'm not too sure about this reason though. MCR are big fans of the Misfits, but their song Helena is about raping a woman and chopping off her arms and legs...

My Chemical Romance – Death Before Disco. Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of the songs which was on the album which was supposed to be Danger Days but was scrapped because it wasn't to their standards.

For those who didn't know, they've rewritten this song and called it Party Poison. It can be found on My Chemical Romance's most recent album Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, and the title comes from Gerard's alter ego on the album.

The lyrics are now:
Everybody pay attention to me
I got the answer, I got the answer
Street walking cheetah with a capitol G
So get your hands up, now get your hands up

Hide your eyes, we're gonna shine tonight
Sub-atomic never get the best of me
Ain't a DJ gonna save my soul?
I sold it long ago for rock 'n roll
Drop the needle when the tape deck blows
I gotta shout this out so everybody knows

This ain't a party
Get off the dance floor
You want the get down
Here comes the gang war

You're doing alright
I got the answer
'Cause all the good times
They give you cancer

If we were all like you in the end
Oh, we'd be killing ourselves by sleeping in
So hit the lights I'll do it again
And keep your cars and your dogs
And your famous friends, well alright

Slide up the faders when the cabinet slams
And get your hands up, now get your hands up
Light up the stage and watch me kick out the jams
So throw your fist up, now throw your fist up

Ain't nobody gonna take my life
Ain't nobody gonna get the best of me
Ain't a preacher gonna save me now
Grab a seat, I'm gonna show you how
Everybody hit the pyro cue
We're gonna blow this off and show you what we do

This ain't a party
Get off the dance floor
You want the get down
Here comes the gang war

You're doing alright
I got the answer
'Cause all the good times
They give you cancer

If we were all like you in the end
Well, we'd be killing ourselves by sleeping in
So hit the lights I'll do it again
So keep your cars and your dogs
And your famous friends, well alright
Well alright, well alright

Alright
We came to party, kill the party tonight
We came to party, kill the party tonight
Let's go

This ain't a party
Get off the dance floor
You want the get down
Here comes the gang war

You're doing alright
I got the answer
'Cause all the good times
Gimme, gimme good times people tonight

This ain't a party
Get off the dance floor
You wanna get down
Here comes the encore

If we were all like you in the end
Oh, we'd be killing ourselves by sleeping in
So hit the lights I'll do it again

So everybody get down
Till the party breaks down
Now everybody get down
Now everybody get down
'Til the party breaks down tonight

My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words Lyrics 11 years ago
It is said that this song is partially written about when Gerard split up with his (then) girlfriend Katmundu (otherwise known as 'K'). For those of you who know (or have heard the rumours) Gerard supposedly dated her for quite a while (she was mentioned in the thanks column of both I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love and Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge) (2002 and 2004). It is also rumoured that 'Olivia' was her daughter (or dog/cat/something)? Clearly they had a very strong relationship (I shouldn't really be talking about this as this is Gerard's personal business and these are only RUMOURS).

Anyway, if you watched Life On The Murder Scene, you would know that they started writing the Black Parade (and probably this song) in around 2005 onwards I think..? That probably means that they split at the time.

I think that the overall feeling behind the song is Gerard expressing his sorrow for breaking up, whilst stating that he will be fine and is able to 'walk this world alone'. There is a slight feeling that Gerard's love for K was stronger than her love for him (remember this is just an interpretation).

The first part of the song ('Now I know that I can't make you stay') could be about how no matter what he says or does, they are splitting up and she is leaving him. It almost sounds to me like K is the one in charge of the break up and that she is the one dumping him.
The 'where's your heart?' parts could mean that she's breaking up with him, and (in his opinion), she doesn't care about his feelings. Perhaps the famous last words she said to him when they were breaking up were very strong and hurt his feelings (his thought being: where's your heart? how could you have a heart if you could hurt me in such a way?).

The second part: 'Well, is it hard understanding I'm incomplete?' could suggest that without her in his life, he feels incomplete and that he wants her to complete him. The line 'A love that's so demanding, I can't speak' is where you might get the idea that his love for her is so demanding that he loves her more than she loves him.

So far the song sounds very dark and depressing (the idea of loving someone more than they love you is far worse than any mutual breakup). The chorus however, is a very positive, not just lyrically, but musically as well (the chorus is the catchiest part of the song).

I think that the chorus is trying to say that despite the break up, Gerard (or whoever this song is about) has the strength to carry on alone.
'I am not afraid to keep on living' could suggest that he can live his live without her.
'Nothing you could say can stop me going home' could mean that he is going home to carry on living the rest of his life without her.

As for the verse after that: 'Can you see my eyes are shining bright, ‘Cause I'm out here on the other side, Of a jet black hotel mirror and I'm so weak' gives off the impression that he is hopelessly sad and heartbroken. 'Eyes shining bright' could be a sign of wanting to cry. In fact, this part of the song makes me imagine Gerard at a hotel on tour after the break up, crying in a mirror. (Some of you may be thinking 'WTFFFF?!' but I get that impression. Remember, the song might not be about him).

As I just said, the song may have been written by Gerard (I think?), but it doesn't mean that it's about him. The song is part of the Black Parade album, which has a storyline about a patient dying of cancer. There is an idea that the patient didn't die of cancer, and that in this song, he is with his lover, who is dying.

'I see you lying next to me, With words I thought I'd never speak, Awake and unafraid, Asleep or dead'. This brings an image of the patient lying down with his lover while she dies.

In conclusion, there is a strong idea that this song is about breaking up, and how life goes on. You might find someone and feel like you will spend the rest of your life with them, but they might not feel the same way. Whether you spend eternity with them or not, life goes on. You will always have the strength to carry on living, even if you feel weak.
This song doesn't sound particularly angry towards the other person. I think that if Gerard wrote this about K, he isn't angry. Losing her felt more like she died if anything, and he was really sad. (Apparently Gee gets really sad when his relationships end. When he broke up with his first girlfriend Barbra, he got really drunk and cried for ages in his room. He said that himself in and MTV VMA interview, so don't yell at me)!
If it does turn out that this song is about Gerard and K and the whole idea of them breaking up is actually true, then I apologise to them for being so nosey. Their personal life should not be exploited by fans, and I know that Gerard is really quiet about his relationships. This is just a song interpretation, Gerard! Please don't hate me!
I personally love this song, especially the way that it's called Famous Last Words, is the last song of the track and makes me think of the lasts words someone might say before they die or break up with you.

There is never just one idea behind a song, especially a My Chemical Romance song. I think that they wrote this song so that people can interpret the way they want to. In all honesty, when I first heard this song, I thought it was a really depressing song. It took me a while to actually realise how positive it really is. This is now one of my favourite songs.
There was also a point when for some reason I thought that the words were 'Is it hard understanding why men complete a love that's so demanding I can't speak'. which would have changed the whole song meaning completely (hence why I found the song so depressing in the first place)!

By the way, I'm sorry that I wrote a whole essay for this one comment. This song comes with multiple ideas, I wanted someone to hear mine.

WHOOO! MCR <3
