@[slushpizza:29658] Actually that part of the song is about the Red Light district in Amsterdam where prostitution is legal.

AC/DC – The Furor Lyrics 6 years ago
I think this song is about frustration with street preachers and bible thumpers The album artwork shoes a demonic looking preacher carrying a bible, which is being struck by lightning. This album was released when televangelism was hitting it's all time high but also at a time when many of those infamous preacher men were being caught doing all sorts of crimes.

"I'm your furor" is telling those charlatans that we wont be passively preached to anymore, and if they persist, we'll just find a new place where there "ain't no door knocking."

Rob Zombie – Satanic Cyanide! The Killer Rocks On! Lyrics 6 years ago
The preacher at the beginning of the song is John Hagee, one of the nuttier evangelical megachurch pastors out there. Sounds like a clip from the 1970s, but he gave this sermon in 2013...

Metallica – Am I Savage? Lyrics 7 years ago
Metallica seems to revisit several themes they've done before on Hardwired to Self Destruct, making new interpretations or continuations of old songs. Thematically, this song reminds me of a darker version of "Of Wolf and Man" from the "Black" album. Obviously, both songs involve werewolves. However, where "Of Wolf and Man" was a little chilling lyrically, it didn't seem dark to me. Am I savage definitely has a darker vibe - something the afflicted person can't control. The werewolves of "Of Wolf and Man" seemed in control and able to regulate their change whereas the creature of Am I Savage seems out of control, ready to inflict mindless pain, even on those it loves.

I don't recognize you anymore...

I have to admit, that gives me a little bit of a shiver.

Metallica – Dream No More Lyrics 7 years ago
This is third time Metallica has looked to H.P. Lovecraft for inspiration. The first was Call of Ktulu on Ride the Lighting and the second as The Thing That Should Not Be on Master of Puppets. For those that might not be familiar, Cthulhu is one of "The Great Old Ones," star-spanning beings far more powerful than Gods. Cthulhu is a being who brings death and insanity (as alluded to in the lyrics), worshiped by dark cultists who want to bring about the end of worlds and revel in the agony and chaos Cthulhu brings.

He's probably super fun at parties.

Anthrax – Evil Twin Lyrics 7 years ago
Charlie Benante told Loudwire that this song was inspired by the 2015 terror attacks against the Charlie Hedbo offices in France and other terror attacks by religious fanatics. Scott Ian added that it was about the actions of people who think they have a right to be judge, jury and executioner over their fellow man.

Anthrax – Breathing Lightning Lyrics 7 years ago
Scott Ian said his inspiration for this song was once again dipping into the writing of Stephen King, returning to the character Roland from "The Dark Tower" series. Ian said that he twisted in and out between reality and the dark fantasy of Roland in this song and that "white lightning" is a metaphor for shooting (which Roland does quite frequently in The Dark Tower books).

Avatar – Sky Burial Lyrics 7 years ago
The Owl is defeated. The album art shows The Owl blasted apart by the coming of dawn.

Really though, no one wins. The album is, IMO a cautionary tale of two extremists fighting over nothing except their desire for what they want, with countless casualties of lesser creatures because of their vanity.

Avatar – When the Snow Lies Red Lyrics 7 years ago
The Wolf is killed in the climactic battle between The Owl and The Eagle. This is The Owl's ode to The Wolf. At this point I think she is starting to question why the war between light and dark was ever necessary, as her allies continue to fall. However, The Wolf really only has himself to blame, as he was part of the voices convincing The Owl to fight in the first place. The Owl also recognizes that if The Wolf, the most feared night time predator can be defeated, so can she.

Avatar – Pray The Sun Away Lyrics 7 years ago
I'm not sure of the perspective on this song but for me it represents the final battle between The Eagle and The Owl. The album artwork shows the two birds clashing in flight, superimposed over their respective symbols (the moon for The Owl, the sun for The Eagle).

Avatar – Night Never Ending Lyrics 7 years ago
This song (sung from the perspective of The Wolf) represents The Wolf trying to rally The Owl and fight again for "night never ending."

However, Johannes revealed in an interview with Metal Hammer that The Wolf "mistakes cynicism for wisdom. He has gone through and recognizes much of The Owl is going through. he's a hunter, but he's old and tired."

The Album art shows the wolf reaching a paw down to The Owls wing, trying to (IMO) draw here into one more fight with The Eagle.

Avatar – Black Waters Lyrics 7 years ago
Johannes said that The Pike (narrator of this song) is the ultimate in depression. "He's the voice that keeps us down. But when you're in that bad mental state, it becomes almost a comforting voice."

As it pertains to the drama playing out in Feathers and Flesh, the Pike just doesn't care. He represents the voice saying that since neither The Owl nor The Eagle is correct that everyone should simply give up, say screw it and drown their sorrows in his black waters.

Avatar – One More hill Lyrics 7 years ago
The Owl has convinced the other creatures of the night to join in her fight to keep dawn (The Eagle) from breaking but despite The Owl cajoling the others into thinking this will be a glorious victory, they quickly realize that she is only concerned with herself. They die and commit atrocities but the cause (The Owl's vanity) isn't worth it.

Avatar – For The Swarm Lyrics 7 years ago
One of my favorites on the Feathers and Flesh album. According to Johannes, the Bees (featured in this song) exist for the hive. They look at themselves as part of something greater, unlike both The Owl and The Eagle, who exist only for themselves. I especially like the line "Thousand knights unsee the sin" referring to (IMO) the idea that the bees ignore the folly of both The Owl and The Eagle and work for the greater good.

Avatar – The Eagle Has Landed Lyrics 7 years ago
According to Johannes, The Eagle represents the opposite of The Owl. The Eagle is eternal daylight but is really no different from The Owl. Johannes said in an interview with Metal Hammer that "what it comes down to is that he's just another extremist, and therefore the same thing as The Owl, just painted in a different color. Thus begins the conflict between The Eagle and The Owl.

Avatar – House of Eternal Hunt Lyrics 7 years ago
Feathers and Flesh is a concept album and this is the first song on the album about The Owl. The Owl, according to Johannes, represents eternal night. This is "her" song about her empire. A never ending night in which the owl is queen of the domain. However, The Owl is short-sighted and unwilling to compromise, leading to her conflict with The Eagle in the next song - The Eagle Has landed.

Avatar – New Land Lyrics 7 years ago
In an interview with Metal Hammer Johannes said that this is the first song on the album where we see weakness in The Owl. The Eagle is threatening her nest and eggs, so she takes her eggs far away and swears to protect them but that this was an empty promise, because you can't always protect your children from the world.

Ghost – Deus in Absentia Lyrics 7 years ago
Based on the album artwork, which depicts a devil ministering to an old man laying in a bed, I think this song represents a rich, powerful person coming to the end of their life. They realize that all their wealth and power, all the things they've come to rely on, mean nothing when faced with death. They are being tempted by Satan to turn to him, in the face of such a tragic realization of loss.

Ghost – From the Pinnacle to the Pit Lyrics 7 years ago
Based on both the video and album artwork, this song is about the birth of Papa Emeritus. The album artwork features Papa standing atop a tall building, overlooking a Gotham-like city, having thrown a woman off the top. The video also features this image at the end, but goes into further detail. Papa Emeritus goes from a student, brought into a secret, power-wielding organization which wants to control mankind to and adult, the figurehead of this "global elite." In the end, the human that will become Papa Emeritus rejects this power and escapes the NWO type society by flinging himself off a building, only to be reborn as Papa Emeritus and return power to the people.

The lyrics build on this theme. Papa wears a crown of independence, having refused to join the hidden power structure. His fall from the pinnacle to the street below ultimately leads to his rebirth, and a return of power to the people.

Ghost – Cirice Lyrics 8 years ago
I see this song as Satan trying to influence a person going through troubled times. He's trying to tempt the person by both saying he understand the turmoil they're going through (I can feel the thunder breaking in your heart) and that he understands (I can see through the scars inside you) and has a solution (can't you see that you're lost without me?).

I don't even necessarily see the song as being malevolent in nature. It could be an offering of help from an unexpected source. The person is looking for answers and Satan is both tempting them and also saying "you may not have expected help to come from me, but it can, if you want it."

@[sokorny:11526] Yes, it's part of the act. Catch them live if you can - they put on a killer show. The whole band concept is developed around them being sort of a polar opposite of Catholicism but the band members themselves have said its tongue-in-cheek and shouldn't be taken as true satanism.

Skid Row – Eileen Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Ly:9820] Not a bad guess but I would consider that when this came out in the mid-90s that Autism wasn't something that much was known about. I do think that mental disability is on the right track though - I was thinking more along the lines of a crazy homeless person, especially based on the last verse where Eileen is "romancing with the moon" but really only talking to a street light.

This song contains lots of references to the original movie, The Exorcist. Ragen is the demon possessed 12-year old in the film and pissing on the rug, puking up green soup and spinning heads are all scenes from the movie.

AC/DC – Safe In New York City Lyrics 9 years ago
The band said this song was originally a bit of taking the piss at former New York mayor Rudy Gulliani's "new" safe and clean New York City. Angus said that New York has always been an unpredictable city, "a place where you can never guess what's going to happen next." In the post 9/11 era, obviously the meaning of the song could be given a new direction.

Machine Head – Devil With The King's Card Lyrics 9 years ago
This song sort of sums up the whole "The Burning Red" album for me. Sort of muddy, doesn't seem to know where it wants to go. Is Nu Metal? Some heavy Alice In Chains style Alt Metal? Heavy, down-tuned guitar, angry lyrics about overcoming something vague, chest thumping. /Shrug. I don't get it. It's not a bad song. It's not a bad album, it just doesn't seem to have any focus.

Machine Head – Message in a Bottle (The Police cover) Lyrics 9 years ago
The exclusion of the third verse turns what really is a fairly optimistic song (when the "author" of the song realizes he isn't alone, there are millions of other lonely people out there) into something totally different and more depressing. Why cut the third verse? Was Machine Head angling for something darker? I don't know, but not a very successful cover in my opinion.

Heh, this is one of my favorite VH songs. Love the bass grove and beat. I remember watching late night TV when I was younger in the 80s and 90s and after about midnight the "sex line" commercials would start playing on cable. Don't see them so much anymore because it's all free on the internet, but back then phone sex lines were a big deal. You name it, any fetish, you could find it. Wasn't cheap though - gotta pay for that sort of thing in person or over the phone.

Faster Pussycat – Mr. Lovedog Lyrics 9 years ago
This song was written about Mother Love Bone front man, Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose shortly before his band's debut album, Apple, was released. The lyrics contain references to several Mother Love Bone song titles. In addition to being one of the pioneers of the Seattle/alternative rock scene, Mother Love Bone is noteworthy for including members who would go on to form Pearl Jam (Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard).

Chevelle – Choking Game Lyrics 9 years ago
Sorry, I just don't see it. Other than the title of the song, none of the verses seem to have anything to do with sex or bondage. Beyond that, a general song about sex doesn't seem like the type of thing that Chevelle typically addresses.

Chevelle – An Island Lyrics 9 years ago
I don't think this song necessarily addresses celebrities but more generally anyone that you're mad at. You want to be able to put that person away and keep them at a distance from you. It might even be someone you usually like but for whatever reason, need to be able to "put away." I like the approach - you're not escaping from them, you're sending them away.

Anthrax – One World Lyrics 9 years ago
A song written near the end of the Cold War between Russia and the United States to remind us that total war or even nuclear war is not the answer. Flips the script a little at the ends and tries to tell us we're all human. In the US the Russians were always painted as the "bad guys" but most of them were just people like us trying to get on with their daily lives.

Ozzy Osbourne – Diggin' Me Down Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's a little more complicated that some of the previous comments suggest. I think this song is about how people who claim to be pure and godly have, in many cases, become the opposite of that. They've become the oppressors and the sinners, refusing to see their own sin while condemning others. Ozzy is calling out a challenge, saying that if Jesus is real and plans to return, he might want to go about making it happen because his followers are turning his religion into a mockery.

Ozzy Osbourne – Soul Sucker Lyrics 9 years ago
I think we all have or have had a "soul sucker" in our lives. A person or persons who are just a drag on everyday life. Who make you tired and heavy. But for whatever reason, we can't cut them out of our lives and they know how to hurt us the worst.

Audioslave – I Am the Highway Lyrics 10 years ago
To me, this song was always about being bigger than the situation. For me, in particular, it reminds me of a long, bad relationship where the person I was with could always make me feel so small. Not only did the song help me walk away, it made me feel better about doing it. I especially like the chorus, which seems to be suggesting that the person affected can even be a little dangerous if pushed (I am not your blowing wind, I am the lightning).

Never could decide if this song was about a tough guy about to kick some butt on the track or just a wanna be trying to act tough. The line where he says "tonight, ain't right, I need to have me a week" sounds like "Yeah, I'm going to beat you, but ummm, not right now, maybe later..."

Seems like a lot of thrash metal bands were ahead of their time in addressing environmental concerns. The clearing of rain forests in South America wipes out untold numbers of animal species and makes way for high pollution industries like cattle ranching. Nice to see Testament address this...all the way back in 1989!

TestAmenT – Envy Life Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the lyrics for Envy Life actually go a little deeper than the obvious meaning and could also represent "biting off more than you can chew" in life. People want more money, more power, more of everything until one day they realize they've taken on more than they can manage and it's consumed them.
