The Foundations – Build Me Up Buttercup Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about loving someone (in the song, a female) that has Borderline and/or Histrionic Personality Disorder. Of course, this song was written/performed before these disorders were recognized in psychology.

It fully describes the push/pull, love/hate, and constant lying nature of these individuals and the toll it takes on their personal relationships ("Why do you build me up buttercup, just to let me down, mess me around?" "To you I am a toy, but I could be the boy you adore"). As well as the turmoil that those who care for a BPD go through ("I love you still, so don't break my heart").

The song is upbeat, but truly listen to the lyrics and you'll find it is about the pain of being involved with someone in a dysfunctional relationship.
