She is the violent, unpredictable ocean... He's the one on the boat that's sinking because of her "storm." It's an analogy. He wants her, but he's only day dreaming. He knows that what she wants, and he can never be that person for her. She is " a pleasant fictional" to him in that sense. He wants to run away with her, wants to be with her, as in forever. But he's "not what she needs"... She's stronger, and staying with him might take "the light her in her eyes"--knowing Joe Purdy, this probably means "light" is happiness and freedom. The last lyric that isn't mentioned here is: "I guess I'll dream that you're here to keep me warm, keep me warm". He's day dreaming of something fictional that he can never have... And feels very lonely about it. " You can love what's left of this lonely excuse of a man" means he somehow regrets being this way (Depression?), so all he can do is day dream. Too bad he doesn't release she's not what HE needs... |

He's breaking up with her, but he doesn't want to. "There's really no way to reach me, 'cuz I'm already gone". I think he means emotionally, because he can't handle it. He's emotionally shut off. Whether this occurred in Vienna or not, distance is an issue-- physical distance or emotional distance. Maybe in 5-10 years they might be able sort things out... Honesty and fear are playing a role in this relationship. "But this is the distance"-- again, either emotional or physical. "This is my game face"-- he's trying to hide his real feelings for some reason which he doesn't get into at all. IMO, I think he's been hurt and he has built emotional walls around him. But did this person do it to hi, or someone else? He doesn't say, but for some reason needs to leave. And I don't think he's telling her that he's ending it. They take a last picture, and smile. Breakups don't work like that. She has no idea, and this one way train means he's not coming back for quite awhile. "Maybe" in 5 years or a decade. When he gets on the train, there goes the down pour"-- he cries after he gets on the train. He repeatedly questions to himself: "Am I *really* gone?" And "Is there really NO way to reach me?". I think he's questioning himself and his barriers. He's not talking about reaching him via phone-- he means emotionally. A "maverick" is someone who doesn't use traditional methods; they're rebellious, they're independent and unconventional. People in Vienna Austria have a stereotype for being cold, aloof, and impolite. Obviously, stereotypes are generally wrong and cannot possibly be true for all people, of course. She has some kind of maverick, and since "this" is Vienna, he's leaving, while trying to keep a straight face. |

This song is not about drugs. It's about Narcolepsy-- and unless one has the disorder, the lyrics won't make much sense to most people. The demons, etc... People with narcolepsy often have very vivid nightmares/hallucinations and become paralyzed in their sleep. Why? Because they're 1/2 awake and 1/2 asleep, and you can't do a damn thing about it but take stimulants to get through the day like a "normal" person, and even then, you're *always* tired. Your brain waves are never quite right-- you can perform "automatic behaviours" at night-- Sleepwalking, eating, or you do weird things, like break things for no reason. It's scary and there's not a lot of support if you have it. Researchers have just linked a certain protein with it. "How'd you like to be alone and drowning?" means that... It's a rare disorder, and everyone thinks you can just "get over it", or that you're lazy, depressed, or on drugs. If you have Narcolepsy, which takes an average of 15 years to get diagnosed with it if you don't have the "falling down kind", you get used to hearing those very negative things which aren't true at all. You get treated like you're mentally ill, when it's a neurological disorder. Alone and drowning... I don't think he means in the literal sense of drowning, but drowning in the fact that he can't have a "normal life"--ever. He's alone, because trust me-- When you tell someone you have it, they think you're weird, or they think of people falling asleep in a bowl of soup. That's Cataplexic Narcolepsy. Not all people with it have muscle loss. You feel alone, perhaps because you don't understand why after 10-20 years you're always tired, regardless of sleep. No one understands it, and you're lucky to have someone read about it. You hear: You're lazy/crazy/on drugs for YEARS. The singer does in fact have mild Narcolepsy, and I think he is explaining the vivid nightmares that sometimes happen in your sleep with this song. |

Jane's been buuuurned! He wants to love her. She makes him feel like he's 14 again--young and full of life. Who wouldn't want that? Only cowards stay while traitors run: Men are often jerks, and she's been hurt so many times that she's put up emotional walls. She doesn't think men can ever be faithful, and won't even let him be "shameful". She's been burned so badly, she just wants a friend. Gold, Frankincense and Mihr... Bliblical reference. It's what they brought Jesus when he was born. Is he putting her of a pedestal? Probably. Juliana/Evan- Juliana and the Hatfield 5, and Evan Dando, the musicians. |

I think this song has a much deeper meaning. It might sound like a fun drinking game, but I think the artist is trying to make something hopeful out of a bad circumstance--alcoholism. He loses fists fights with the air, is mean, rude, and wakes up in a haze. "I've been through the silver and the bells": I believe means he's been to AA meetings. Silver coins for sobriety (30/60/90 days, etc.) and bells, as many AA meetings are held in church basements, and churches have bells that go off every hour. I think he's rejecting AA's ideas, because he said "he's lived through it", which implies a negative experience with it. "Just do your best": No one is perfect, but do a little better, every day, for your own sanity. This is certainly not a "happy" song-- he becomes delusional, emotional, and angry, fill of regrets. I think he's trying to make the best out of a crappy situation, with humour (the "I hear things that aren't really there-- la la la"). But he IS making the best of the situation: Have humour and do your best. |

Wow, again a great song that no one has commented on! Everyone has secrets/skeletons in their closets. He wants to tell his, because he knows the other person wouldn't care and is kind. He wants to tell the other person to be honest. Once a secret is outed, they usually don't matter. The other person calms him, as he has anxiety and thoughts that won't stop. The other person would "fend off these demons", sending away the "ghosts that haunt him". He's awakened with anxiety, which probably signifies a diagnosis of Panic Disorder. He wants this person to keep him company, even in death, as they calm him like nothing else can. |

Wow, I can't believe no one left a thorough comment on here yet! I first heard this song when I was driving, listening to NPR. I almost had to pull over because I was crying. My meaning: He's a very hard worker, and wants loves from a woman. He almost needs to create one that will love him as much as she would love him. He tried to make a love for himself like "God" created man. He sowed the ground with blood, and turned the dirt to mud. It exhausted him. He is so proud of his love, that he wants to show her off to the whole world. He's bled for her, he's starved for her, he's worked so hard for her. "And I bleed for you, and I'm skinny as a rail." "I'll be so obliged to keep you nice and warm and safe... And won't you be so proud of me?" That's what we all want after all-- to be loved, honored, warm and safe. |

Plato or not: She gets to walk away from fears and faults for someone else to clean up. He's going to have hope regardless-- and not to "keep her". He's experiencing derealization, a loss of himself within reality. He has fears about life and love because of her, and she wants to kill herself, or she's threatening to (emotional blackmail), but he won't let her do either. He's telling her to come out of the "cave"-- her denial. He wants to know everything, and he knows other people's lives are worse, but he still hurts. Siren's call= a call to seduce. He says, do all you want, but I won't listen or respond to them. He needs freedom and love as it's meant to be-- without betrayal or lies. |

| She has cheated on him. She's told him that she's admitted to him all of the betrayals, but he knows she hasn't told him everything. He hangs his head for being a coward for trying to explain his feelings, when he knows she doesn't care about them; She doesn't even want to hear them. He wants to tell her, but it only makes her feel guilty, and that's why she doesn't even want to hear them. He tries to look his best, and she doesn't realize his attempts. She cries, out of guilt, and he's telling her "Don't cry-- you lied to ME! Why are you crying?!"...Maybe he knows it's only out of guilt, or as en effort to get him back. He finds it cruel that she's the one crying when he's the one that's been hurt. He knows that the relationship is gone forever, and he may still love her, but his real love for her is gone forever. He can't trust her, and she has made him doubt what he's been told of love: He thought love was a "fortress"--something that protects you. Instead this love has hurt him. She's careless and cold and self-absorbed. The whole time he relied on her honesty--and finds himself a fool for it. I think he's being sarcastic when he says "Who in this world could ask me to resist your last kiss?". He detests this love in the end, of course. | |
