Oh, Sleeper – The Marriage Of Steel And Skin Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a good interpretation for the song, but ignores that the song is part of a larger, hypothetical story.

"The one we followed has fallen to our foe" refers to God disappearing in the fight against Satan in Endseekers.
"You can't just shed your soul and let run all your thirsting tongues" refers to the fact that we can't just resort to anarchy after God "dies" because order and justice must remain.

Also, the narrator does mean his actual daughter; the entire album is about him and his daughter.

Oh, Sleeper – The Family Ruin Lyrics 12 years ago
This comes straight from the lyric book that came with the album, with one exception.

The last line "Cause he'll never wake to see his daughter cry," is different in the booklet.

In the book, it reads: "Cause he'll never wake to hear her daughter cry."

I think this shows that his daughter is pregnant from the rape. I assume that the band only included the line in the book to give the people who took the time to read it another interesting plot twist to think about.

She finds him by the fire,
His claws of God are dripping from his crimes,
He beckons her, "Sweet Daughter,"
The voice who once avenged her younger life.

He's got the voice of a con,
The same one who cut down in the name of his god,
Who took on the robe of a judge,
without a license to kill without cause,
He's not worth it.

He's not worth it,
He's not worth it,
Remember what he did that made you question all the words he cited,
From the book, the same book,
That's reeling you home after so many years of silence.

And the daughter watches father,
As he sleeps and dreams, she brings the knife to light.
Cause she knows he can't go farther,
And he'll never wake to see his daughter cry.

Don't lose control or you will long,
to go back,
To this time,
And rewrite your thoughts,
Cause you're about to choose what you called,
So ironic,
It's ironic,
It's ironic that you're contemplating murder while I'm educating you in mercy,
You say you want,
You say you want,
The means to believe,
Then don't change who you are,
Cause who you are is how I made you to discover me.

The steel marries his skin

No! It's not worth it!
It's not worth it!

I cut him down,
I cut him down!

You didn't have to fall,
It's your fault,
It's your fault!

You lost control,
And you long to go back and rewrite your thought,
But I won't let you slip away,
Not this time,
Not this time,
This time you're gonna learn what it means to recieve,
The very mercy,
That you denied,
When you denied the means to believe,
I keep feeding you the fruit that you need,
But you spit it out to further your doubt.

And now he can't go farther,
Cause he'll never wake to see his daughter cry.

This is it, and this is all that there is,
There's no right or wrong,
No king, no throne to defend,
Cause we are all that exists,
No blessing God,
No Judge or Law,
There's no cost or calls from the top,

We're all on our own.
We're on our own.

No faith exists in this world that we live
No pagans, no prophets,
This is it, we are the atheist writ
No preachers, no new born believers,
Your faith is in jest.

What if we're wrong?
What if we're not all alone?
What we're lost,
And we missed the whole point of it all?
What if we're wrong?
What if we're not all alone?
What if our peace can never be found on our own?

I saw God die
I saw God die

We're on our own. (We're on our own)

Well, if all that remains is our avaricious wit,
An eye for an eye is the only law that can exist.

So don't use your romance to soften defeat,
Or your trophies of war,
To boast of your feats.
If you've failed, then you've failed,
Cause your body is weak,
And you'll never be as strong as you dream to achieve.

What is we're wrong?
What if we're not alone?
What if we're lost,
And we missed the whole point of it all?

But I saw God die
(I saw God die)
I saw God die
(I saw God die)

Oh, Sleeper – Hush Yael Lyrics 12 years ago
One of the biggest themes this album deals with is the fact that humans are inherently evil, and with no punishment from God, they can do what they want, with no hope for heaven or fear of hell.

This song is one of several that deal with this theme. It describes the Nahariya attack back in 1979 to support this idea.

Nahariya is in Israel. In April of 1979, four Palestinian terrorists arrived by boat in the town of Nahariya, to carry out a mission given to them by their leaders. This mission was to kill an Israeli police officer, and to kidnap some Israelis and take them back to Lebanon. They killed the police officer first, then went to an apartment building to search for their next victims. They broke into an apartment containing Danny Haran, his wife, and their two daughters, one was four and the other (Yael) was one. The mother was able to crawl into the crawl space with Yael and a neighbor that went to them for help. In order to prevent Yael from crying and causing them to be found, the mother held her hand over Yael's mouth in fear. This resulted in Yael being suffocated. The terrorists (at this point one of the four had been killed by another resident of the building) then took Danny and his four year old daughter as hostages to secure their escape and went back to their boat. By the time they reached it, however, Israeli police had surrounded them and disabled the boat. In an act of desperation, the leader of the terrorists, Samir Kuntar (who was only 16 at the time) shot Danny in the back, then drowned him to ensure that he was dead. He then beat the four year old girl to death against the rocks on the beach with the butt of his rifle. One more terrorist was killed by the Israeli police, and Kuntar and the remaining one were captured. They have both been released since then.

Phew, sorry for that long explanation, now on to how it fits into the album.

There are two relevant sets of lines that are important to the overall meaning of the album. First, it reiterates that humans are capable of despicable things, and second, The lines such as "cut him slow til his soul takes flight," and "End him slow," again brings up the cruelty of this world where they believe God is dead. They relish and take pleasure in punishing others.

Also (on a personal note), as I think others have said, the bastard that led the group, Samir Kuntar, has been honored as a hero in Lebanon, and the idea that he lives free just sickens me.

This song describes the priest-turned-judge that the album follows. After the "death" of God, He becomes a judge out of good intentions to pass judgement on those who take advantage of others, as he believes God to be dead, and therefore there is no longer a punishment for the wrong-doers of the world.

His daughter (who the album also follows) get raped and the rest of the song is description of how the judge will pass judgement to the rapist. Especially important to this song is how the judge is eager to pass cruel and brutal judgement. Later in the album, this is addressed by the remaining Christians and God.

Oh, Sleeper – Shed Your Soul Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about the "death" of God in "Endseekers." The song talks about the desolation of the world without either God or Satan in it, but more importantly, the fact that the people in it no longer have a fear of God or punishment for their actions.

The album also follows a former priest who fought in the war on God's side (and his atheist daughter), who becomes a judge in the aftermath, which is where the lines "So don't use your robes to soften defeat,
And trophies of war to boast of your feat," and "Well if all that remains, is our avaricious wit,
Then an eye for an eye is the only law that can exist," come into play.

I think the most important lines of the song are "What if we're wrong? What if we're not all alone? What if we're lost? And we missed the whole point of it all?" because it gives a bit of foreshadowing as to the purpose of God disappearing. I think it is a believer questioning whether God actually died or is simply teaching them something. But he is having sort of an internal argument, which is why after those lines, he says "But I saw God die."

Note: I used the lyrics straight from the band via their lyrics book that came with the album, as the lyrics both her and on the Solid State videos are wrong in some places. (Ex. "avaricious wit," not "apparitions's wit."

The Solid State videos are wrong a couple of times... The lyric book that came with the album say different lines in some places throughout the album that are much more accurate and make more sense.

Oh, Sleeper – Endseeker Lyrics 12 years ago
Oh, Sleeper's last album was about a physical war between God and Satan. In the last song on that album, "The Finisher," God cuts off Satan's horns and kills him. This album begins directly afterwards.

The first few lines describe the last moments of the fight, with lines like "Behold our Captain, as he controls his captive," showing that God is winning. After he kills Satan however, things take a turn.

The line "So long all you children, The road is not yet coming to an end" is God telling the followers that have fought for him that their victory is not going to be what they expected, and then he vanishes. The remaining lines of the song are the followers of God expressing their disbelief, and accusing God of abandoning them after all they've given.
