This is a stretch, but this song reminds me of Graceland and people's "loveless fascination" with Elvis. The line, "Lower the curtain down on Memphis" is significant - otherwise, why mention the city? (Graceland, by the way, is in Memphis.) The chorus, then, makes sense to me: "“Wish I knew what you were looking for, might have known what you would find.” Of course, he doesn't have time to chat with people ("private consultation"), but it sparks his curiosity. It seems the narrator, too, is drawn to Graceland for reasons unclear to him, which is why "it's something quite peculiar. Something shimmering and white Leads you here despite your destination, under the Milky Way tonight." He may not have thought about visiting Graceland, but once in Memphis - how can you not? If I'm off the mark, then the clue to the song's meaning is the city of Memphis. |

I think the song is about death and mortality. It's as if the narrator is taking stock of his life "I never caught the first wave. I never made the first string." He's not afraid of dying, but he knows he will - and that's burdensome. A beast to contend with. |

"I'll go with her I'll never know how far, how long" AND "She doesn't have a clue" AND the last chorus Would I forget Laying myself down Just to regret it And that's all" |

| Although "into strangers turning into dust" would be better lyrically speaking - she seems to sing "and two" in the live recordings. | |

Actually, elessar007 - the lyrics on the Mazzy Star site are not entirely correct. Mazzy Star doesn't publish song lyrics, so it's really up to the discerning ear of the listener to figure them out. On that note, this is what I hear (based on the studio track and live recordings of the song): "INTO DUST" Still, falling Breathless and on again Inside today Beside me today Around broken in two ‘til your eyes shed Into dust Like two strangers Turning into dust ‘til my hand shook with the weight of fear I could possibly be fading Or have something more to gain I could feel myself growing colder I could feel myself under your feet Under your feet It was you, breathless and torn I could feel my eyes turning into dust And two strangers turning into dust Turning into dust Based on this, I think the song is about a relationship that is dying, crumbling, disintegrating. |
