Dire Straits – Love Over Gold Lyrics 12 years ago
It's amazing how the main tune matches "Private dancer". The other day I read this latter was actually recorded togetehr with the rest of LOG album, and Tina's voice added later. Alway thought he had just written it for her, coming from LOG song. BTW, it'd close the circle, right?

"Love the \"2 men say they're\ Jesus, one of them must be wrong\" lyrics."
Gotta agree, and agree, and agree, and agree, and agree, and agree 1000 times!!!! :)

Nowadays it's undoubtedly in force yet. If DS fans wer of that kind of pseudo religious troupes, we'd say Knopfler is a prophet. But I'd just say it's brilliant, he's a clever guy and that problemns in teh world are not that different to eighties' ones.

Does anyone know why MK supresses the "bettie Davies knees" joke in all the live performances I've heard? Most I heard was "twisted knees". But most of timmes he just remains silent, as "er, you knowe guys I can't tell that".

"at the very end:

"I'm off. I'm out sick"

hahaha"
Hadn't noticed. Brilliant!

I must admit that also musically never rated it too high. But it has been growing, and the version (maybe in Sydney) woth the alarms at the beginning is just brilliant.

Dire Straits – Follow Me Home Lyrics 12 years ago
One of DS best songs ever. I agree the air of mistery and macabre feeling. It's a song that scares, as Iron Hand, or even "News". leaves some sensation of... restlessness is the word?
I agree all said, but then I'd ask what the insistence on "Woman follow me home" plays. I'd say that in all that context, the speaker finds a woman he wants to have love with. Ot can be a tourist in the explained context, but also a lonely man with ambiguous intentions. He notes some details that are a bit to ask "Er... what you pay attention to!" of some macabre nature, yes. Maybe he's a killer or somtehing. Or just needs love. I would say the song wants to leave that open. The way it says "I know the way, I can see by the moonlight clear as day" is particularly scary to me.

Dire Straits – Angel Of Mercy Lyrics 12 years ago
And the two notes that are whistled just add the cherry on the cake!! :)))
One of those where the group does more obvious chorus, did you notice? Sounds liek love declaration inspired on real life? Did MK dicorce and marry again at that time, for hazard?

Dire Straits – Twisting By The Pool Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, I wanted to talk about this one for long.
In a classical 1983 Tokyo performance, Mark explains the meaning. It's one of that classical topic: the song about jerks or stupid guys, as the likes of Heavy fuel, Money for nothing, El macho... you know. He imitates the tone of the typical trendy guy who says "let's go twisting by the pool"... the word in spanich is "pijo". A boasty, over trendy guy. The guy who would do the Eurobeat, and yes! be interested on the Inflation and the stock karket, or at least pretend he is.
I always thought it was just a simple R&R song, with nothing more to it, but one way or another, every song by MK that sounds too light has something behind.
I don't think it has much to do with bother on how people took Telegraph Road, (that BTW is probably their best and an all time classical). I don't see Mark doing a song to specifically show anything: he really gives always proof of doing whatever he feels like doing!
Cheers to all!

Yes, but he says "Now I am a soldier of fortune". That "now" seems to mean he's the same guy who has switched bands, right?

Dire Straits – The Man's Too Strong Lyrics 12 years ago
Basicly the same message than on "Ride across the river". It really looks MK was inspired by the thing. Pure duality about what's wrong and right on wars. He can be just a drummer boy or a dictator, it doesn't matter. The guy also is confessing, both interrogued (when he calls god in torture sessions, which might mean he apealed to that reasons for what he did, both being tortured or applying torture himself, again intentional ambiguity)and to God (father) at the end of the song, and whe he says "The man's..." he refers to the human being on the whole, obviously included himself. The confession itself is maybe a realistic thing or even a cinical one which the song would be criticising. MK very usually impersonates (as the one who tells the story) the one the song is criticising. This one, Ticket to heaven, RATR, All the songs about "jerks" as himself says, etc.. In fact very few times he takes a 3rd person point of view, as in "Iron hand", where he seats apart, watches and tells, probably because it's about a particular fact that impressed him so much.
In this one, I don't think there's forgiving for the baddie.
BTW, sometimes live "I gave 'em to your wife" ends it with a "...with your wife", but I can't understand the verb, I mean it'd be as "I spent them"... anyone knows? cheers

Dire Straits – Ride Across The River Lyrics 12 years ago
Yeah, mercenaries but generally speaking it fits all the current wars as "roght becomes wrong and left becomes right" factor is something seen nowadays, as same forces can fight/become alliates with the same one within some years, needless to give examples!
I think the song already points this, as in the first prase the guy would be a "regular" and on the second, a "mercenary". It all depends on the situation. In fact, beyond the anti war theme, I'd say that the main target is pointing that being mercenaries, being regular forces is the same.

Dire Straits – Solid Rock Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, for me the studio version is just palinly brilliant. It's as if it never stops. It looks to increase the speed all the time, gives no break at all, yet it's simple and consistent like a hammer kick. It's a bit like a Chuck Berry or Gene Vincent song, and as short as it can be done, with no extra time or display added. A bit like "We will rock you", a bit "That's it and it's all".
I also love the garage sound and Roy Bittan's piano is perfect, and Pick Whiters is also perfect, givin it just the correct amount of rythm.
As it's a perfect frame or chassis, further developements, as with Eric Clapton on the scene, are fantastic. But the the original version is as good if not better. I also love one of the first live versions, one with eight times of battery and nothing else till the guitar starts.

Mark Knopfler – The Ragpicker's Dream Lyrics 12 years ago
Forgot to add!! Also the euphemistic way to refer to her as associate, together with tha fact of him being the Railroad king, that yes keeps a lot of dignity and pride, something usual in these kind of characters in these stories.
Also that for me is really good Christmas song. It makes a knot in my throat, but then so many other songs also do!! :) Yes it's in my not-at-all-short-list of songs to listen in Christmas... :)

Mark Knopfler – The Ragpicker's Dream Lyrics 12 years ago
Hi all. as ageneral (and first) comments, just guys think how the language barrier may mean for a non natural english spoken. We always assume we're not grasping it all so we let the imagination fly.
Particularly with great Mark's songs where things don't necessarily mean something clear.
In this case (get ready guys) I simply imagined the scare crow is a woman. Why? Why not!! I agree most of considerations on contrast with Xmas feelings and misery for the two people and how the nice Xmas feelings (and the bottle) make them scape the misery. So I thought that a love story within this context got stronger and made the situation deeper (in terms of communicating feelings) too.
I ams urprised no one has considered this possibility, and alsoa sk you if there's some line that simply discards it. You know we latin speakers have genre more clear so the ambiguity in english makes us guess.
I think the the story of the two poor homeless man and lady would be sooo nice in this context, yet sad and all in a very Dickensian way, right?
I guess that hints such as the beautiful hair, the dancing, the tear made me think they love each other. I didn't know, but I imagined the rest.
What you think?
regards
