I'm not sure the compromise is him giving up drinking, I think it's him saying he's not gonna be able to forget all the things she said and did that are ringing in his head, so the only thing to do is for him to walk away :'( I've been looking at all the songs on this album (and some on horrorscope too) as a story about the same girl. in Girlfriend he says "This place is strange, empty/ you did your time, plenty. / And the walls are bare where your pictures hung". So in Arch Drive Goodbye, he's making the decision to break it off, her pictures are gonna come down, and by the time we get to Girlfriend she's gone and so are the pictures. Only problem with this is that Arch Drive Goodbye is the last song...guess it's not chronological :) |

I completely agree with your interpretation. I wouldn't have said that the sex defines the relationship, but I think that's right, b/c that's the things he saying to appease her, telling her how great the sex is. What I don't get is why he's telling her to turn off the light and leave him alone, yet he's an insomniac and needs a sedative. IS she the one keeping him awake and making him be an insomniac? |

I think it's just a play on words. You've got one story (as in one life story, not as in a 2nd floor) to tell, one life to live. Make the most of it. The badn have said this song is about growing up and losing your innocence, and not wanting to. It ties in with the chorus, where he says "Good Lives are like gold, like the oldest story/ will mine be told while i'm still young and horny." |

They had a long distance relationship, she lives in Florida and he's in Cali. He's lost without her. If he pulled out all the stops, he could get her to move there... also, it kind of sounds like he's saying "too scared to pray", but not sure that makes sense. maybe he's "too scared" to play any music, he's broken. |

I'm not sure if there's really a relationship there, yet, but there's definitely a lot of power struggle. At times he feels defeated- she's in charge, like a heroine, he's under her thumb, she's wearing the crown, he's just a dog and she's a God. When he sees her under the stormy sky (does this allude to his emotions?), she's a heroine and owns him, but when he's holding her in his arms under the stormy sky, he's hopeful they could be equals and she could give up power. Yet he's still thinking about winning...he won't take no for an answer, despite all he's up against. He's not gonna let her get to him, she can fight him or insult him (break him down), but he's not gonna let her have her way--he's addicted to her (his senses need their fix), and when he has her for a bit he's really happy. It sounds like she doesn't want to be with him?? or maybe she's got a mental illness or is somehow unhappy and trying to push him away? :( I guess the stormy sky would be her emotion then. |

So, I came looking for the Eve 6 version of this song since I've had their new album on repeat the last few days. I didn't even realize The Sugi Tap had put out a recording (and it was looking at the lyrics for it! hahaha) till I started looking at the dates of the previous comments. Apparently this is a very important song for the band, and I have a few thoughts on the meaning. :) The lyrics that Max changed for the Eve 6 version on "Speak In Code" are-- A hymn and a secret love Beneath the bleacher... Wham, bam, *fold the hand* Pick up the pieces. Your mood is always manic and I do suppose *This masquerade's become a habit.* Here's the band's commentary about this song that goes along with it on Spotify: MAX: It's a song about losing your way and it's one of those songs, I thought I was writing about someone else, and then I sorta realized that it was about me. And, um, I think... I don't know, it's an important song for the record. It's honest and earnest, and it's a good way to end the record, I think. Tony: It's a really good bookend to the record. This song sort of kept us going for year or two there- Max: It did. Tony: We always had a special place in our hearts for it and we played it live a few times, and you know, the people that heard it seemed to really respond to it. So that kind of kept this process going as we were getting the band started again and this song was a big part of that. And it's really good that it made it all this way and onto the record, and sorta represents that little bit, sorta the climb back into this thing that is Eve 6. Max: Definitely. Jon: Basket, base, and footballs. Let's go play. Tony: Yeah and it shows how into sports we are! [he sounds sarcastic...?] [all laugh] Max: This song helped make believers out of people that ended up being part of team Eve 6, 2.7 Jon: It's a good team, we're happy about our team. Max: And it is a good team. And it's one of those songs that's really fun to play live: there's something cathartic about it. Our diehard fans know all the words to it and it's a special moment live, for sure. How cool is that??! I might be totally wrong, but it seems to me like this could have been written about Jon and the band's break-up, and then in the ended it was the very song that brought them back together?? (not sure when that switch would have happened where Max realized he was writing about himself?! obviously they were all burned out, but I wonder how much conflict there was between the 3 of them that was involved?? Is Max directing the song at Jon and being angry) From the press I've read it seems like he came back on board when he saw they still had an audience...he's the "people" who were made into believers by the fans' love of the song...? :-D As far as the song's meaning itself, Max is singing about the difference between how other people see you, and what's going on inside your head. They have this theme a lot in their songs. At first describing the situation, how there's this facade of being the one with the perfect genetics, whose mother thinks so highly of them, yet they're "disconnected" and full of malice and insecurity: their life's falling apart. Before he goes into the chorus, he says "let me do the talking," and then the chorus is him urging the person in the song to mend what's wrong with them self or their life. It's like he's saying 'Now I'm gonna tell you what you need to do.' He's kinda calling the person out about their life falling apart cuz they're trying to deny or hide it, and then urges them to let it go and move on. I think it's significant that they changed the one line, "When you hear this song you'll have a tantrum," to "This masquerade's become a habit." It changes the tone of the whole song--in the Sugi Tap version, it's like he's still blaming the person, but then the reworked Eve 6 version has changed to him having the attitude of having gotten over it, and acknowledges it might not be entirely the person's fault. Somehow they got caught up in being malicious or fake (the "masquerade"), but it's only a bad habit, so don't beat yourself up... just give up the masquerade, you can pick up the pieces! The song has taken on a whole different significance for them along their journey to getting back together. They've moved on from this bad situation, and it's cathartic to sing the song now. I'm not sure what the part "with a hymn and a secret hid beneath a broken heart" means. There's some reference to religion in other songs, but are they religious? Maybe the hymn part is just saying to have faith? Hymn comes from the Greek word meaning ode or song of praise... so, a meaningful happy song? no clue what he means haha. I think the whole verse is just him saying no one's perfect, but can you cut your losses, stop dwelling on the past, and move on with life. Total genius. Of course, as Vervus22 says, sometimes Max puts in personal references that mean nothing to anyone but him, so who knows if anyone could truly "decode" the whole thing :P |

| I think the "what is it you really want" line is what he'd say to her a lot, they'd had problems in the relationship and he is/was frustrated that he couldn't make her happy. :( I think he's got mixed feelings, admitting he couldn't give her what she wanted (b/c he couldn't figure it out, which is sad :(), which led her to break up with him and get with another guy. He's still got feelings for her, calling her his girl, but also knows it wasn't working, but yet it's so hard for him to see her moving on. | |

Yeah, I see that. What if he had been dating her though, and the part about waiting patiently is because he just can't get over her... idk, I identify with that b/c that's how I feel about my ex. He's with someone else now and it absolutely kills me, and I have been trying so hard to get over him and just can't, even after having other relationships after him. I'm not actively trying to get him back b/c it hurts too much to try so hard after what happened, but if he came back I'd be ready, haha. Going along with your interpretation, what would she be crying on his shoulder about, and begging for? To be friends? That's the line that wouldn't make sense to me if they are just friends. |

When will I see you again? _____ I think this song is about self-doubt and feeling insecure about yourself when a relationship ends. It's hard to let go when you don't know what you did wrong. She'd believed that her boyfriend loved her, yet he left w/o any warning or explanation. She can't make sense of it--the only explanation seems to be that he's just forgotten her! She acknowledges that she has faults, but why can't he remember that he loved her despite the faults? The only thing she could do was give him space to figure it out on his own, and hope he'll come around. She's struggling to have faith to do this (faith that he did love her), though, because he gave up on the relationship so suddenly and abandoned her--she wonders if he is remembering her at all. Please remember the good lovable parts of me, I want to be loved by you. It's like she wrote this song about my life!! The end of the story is that you give them the space b/c you have no other choice and 2 years later when you try to ask "don't you remember," they get engaged to someone else a month later. Didn't those 6 years with me mean anything to him? "Baby please remember me once more." The next chapter is "Someone Like You," which Adele has described as being about her imagining looking him up in 40 years and finding he's settled down and happy with someone else. But it's still not really over for her! |

In French the word for femininity is féminité. (Actually, in Estonian, austa means "respect" and üske means "religions." I doubt she was trying to speak Estonian though!) Maybe she was combining lieben and scheisse in the 2nd word (love and shit), and there's english and spanish in the sentence of course as well. I think she just made up the word monstere to sound french-ish. I don't speak German so I'm relying on google translate to tell me if these are real words, but, as someone familiar with Phonology, it makes sense to me that she meant to be saying something like 'Ich liebe aus to be klar, es kum ent madre monstere.' So, more or less, "I love to be [made] clear, it's developed into mother monster." |
