Gordon Downie – The Never Ending Present Lyrics
| 11 years ago
|
Seize the moment, and don't have high expectations for the future, or value the future too much. "The money always drops", but the sights and sounds around us change and amuse and belie our (mis)conceptions daily if we're aware. Don't miss the small things I guess. The big moments are easy to see, but the subtle, and intricate pieces of our lives shouldn't be overlooked.
My impression of Gordie's meaning - but I could be way off. |

Stars – A Thread Cut with a Carving Knife Lyrics

There's always a tomorrow, however tenuous our grasp is. Hold on. Tomorrow could bring joy. 1000 days of ass can be redeemed by one temporary moment of joy. That's the whole point of it all - that's what compels us to open our eyes in the morning. |

Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics

The obvious interpretation is the one that connects you (us) personally to the lyrics and to the music as the artist intended - for me, it's about the bitter-sweet joy of reaching adulthood and emancipation from our parents and experiencing life on our under-educated terms for the first time. |

Oh so beautiful and I agree with the dude below, "I love your paintings-don't take your colors away. I've grown more fearful of them every day" is a lyric that lives with me everyday since I first heard it. |

Modest Mouse – Polar Opposites Lyrics

These cats might not be fashionable as they once were - that brief moment when they were indie darlings. Alas, put on your Styrofoam Boots and float like Christ. Indie darlings or not, they will soundtrack your life. Ignore the haters, IB and company will always have a place in my setlist. Shall we discern the meaning behind these lyrics? Na. Upside down lyrics propelled by uplifting music works for me. It's all nice. |

Joni Mitchell – This Flight Tonight Lyrics

I very much appreciate Nazareth's rendition of this song. It's amazing how poignant such basic lyrics can be. The gift of a true writer is saying what you mean in the simplest terms. An apt sentiment for this poem. |

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics

We obviously connect lyrics to our personal realities and I have done the same. To me it's about the danger of self-pity which is a potentially lethal state of mind. |

One of the Hip's best, buried on a forgettable album. But so goes the Hip - their last album to connect from start to finish was IVL. |

The Tragically Hip – Morning Moon Lyrics

Gordie is too smart to believe in god and fairy tales. It's the morning after - a tryst? An argument? Making peace with the significant other outside the house? And recognizing the beauty of their surroundings and realizing the insignificance of our petty human squabbles? |

I admit when I'm wrong, and I was completely wrong here. I see and wholeheartedly agree with your interpretation. Thank you for your humble correction. I live abroad and have encountered such pros - I should have known better! |

Hayden – Worthy of Your Esteem Lyrics

How many of us hope we're worthy of other's esteem? Love this song. Our social life; our name; depends on the opinions of others. Fuck em if they don't get us. As long as you know your heart is in the right place and you make an effort to connect; and don't let anyone down - you're worthy of someone's esteem. Wow - that's a tall order. |

The Tragically Hip – Ahead By A Century Lyrics

The protagonist is a junkie (that's when the hornet stung me - needle). It's hard to maintain a life when you're a junkie. And you tend to disappoint people when you're on the fix. He's a f*&k up and there's nothing he can do about it. |

The Tragically Hip – Grace, Too Lyrics

There's no hooker context. That's Sundown by another Gordie. It's just Gordie being Gordie - random and poetic. The lyrics become personal when they're this cryptic. |

If I was back in high school, I'd pay you to write my essays - and I've got a knack for writing but I have a hunch that you do as well. This is one of the best random essays I've come across on the interweb. Well done, good sir. |

Some interesting interpretations above, but again, this song is all about the jam at the end. The music trumps any lyrics. |

Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened Lyrics

I disagree...this song is all about the sickest 3 minute jam to end a song ever in Deerhunter's catalog (along with Desire Lines). The lyrics are irrelevant. |
