Tom Waits – Diamonds on My Windshield Lyrics

I thnk that the song is exactly what the seems to be. He is a traveling musician coming home. Prior to becoming a traveling musician for a living him was a sailor in the U. S. Coast Guard. Diamonds on the winshield is the only metphorical statement in the song and this is clearly about the rain while he is trying to get home to relax. |

Tom Waits – Get Behind the Mule Lyrics

The idea for the song came from his wife saying that she didn't marry a man, that she married a mule. He stated that you got to get behind the mule. At that point his wheels started turning and he and his wife wrote the song together. |

Tom Waits – New Coat of Paint Lyrics

One of Toms best songs. To me it is about a stale relationship and the main character is trying to spice it up with a night out on the town. I could be wrong.
Thats the thing with most of Toms songs, they all have meanings behind them that leave the listener with their own opinion as to what the meaning is all about.

The earlier post for this are absolutely right this, could be a play or a movie. I have started working on a screenplay, loosely based on this song.

Tom Waits – Black Wings Lyrics

This song is mixed cultural metaphors for death around the world. This is also the first that I ever heard from Tom and was hooked afterwards. |
