The XX – Heart Skipped a Beat Lyrics 13 years ago
One thing I always appreciate in music is when the sentiment of the melody matches that of the lyrics. This song is simple, echoing, repetitive. The lyrics themselves are not overly deep; unrequited love is something most can relate to, and in this world of free individualism, is even more common then ever. In my own jaded heart, I am moving through these motions. The chorus, say it all for me.

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before

Despite the sparks and energy when we met, you were already in some future thought, but I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you that. From someone whose heart rarely skips a beat, it makes it all the harder. I'm still glad I met him though.

13 & God – Ghostwork Lyrics 13 years ago
I really appreciate the way Doseone takes pieces of our habits and flows them into these deep, existential metaphors for the way we have built our lives. Whether our obsession is poetry, music, religion... they act as addictions which hold our entire existence by the balls. We become some sort of overly-inspired cowboy riding our blind muse until it inexorably rocks us back to the hard, dirty earth where we are reminded of our humanity.

I can particularly relate to the the lyrics:

you've had the wind knocked out of you by something life size
you're afraid to say to your face
you stretch the pen and cheat the sleep

13 & God – Perfect Speed Lyrics 13 years ago
Above all others on 13 & God's newest album, Own Your Ghost, this song replays on my internal radio. The brooding layers of the track are somehow nostalgic, really tugging on my evocative heartstrings. The Notwist's melancholy lyrics are simple and powerful. I find the word order in the line "much machines on every fast" to be a vivid description, almost metaphor, for the busy industrial world we have built for ourselves; a world that has surpassed time. The following verse also describes the intensity of time, but in complete emotional opposite. I can see a guilt stricken, worried, soul- agonizing every second for inevitable news about in the name of love. As we race through evolution focusing all of our energy toward our expectations; we spend our lives in the future. It has become only in moments of utter angst that the present is even acknowledged.
