My personal interpretation of this song is about Divorce. Alone, listless, breakfast table in an otherwise empty room means: The child is feeling alone, down (which is the definition of listliss) and the breakfast table is the only thing left in an otherwise empty room because the dad moved the rest of their stuff out. A young girl, violens, center of her own attention: A young girl means the obvious, violens could mean the "music" of the arguements between the parents, center of her attention, she is the only one that pays attention to herself. The mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it, trys to make her proud: The mother reading could be a metaphor for yelling at the father, the child tries to understand it means that the girl is trying to understand why her parents are fighting. Trys to make her proud means that the child is trying to be strong and break up the arguements. The shades go down it's in her head, painted room, you can't deny there's something wrong: The shades go down means either the child is going to sleep or that she's trying to block out the screaming and fighting. Painted room is probably the obvious the child's in her room. Can't deny there's something wrong means the obvious too. Don't call me Daughter, not fit to, the picture kept will remind me: The child is saying: "This divorce is my fault and if it is I'm fit to be your daughter." Many children feel like this when their parents got or are getting divorced, me being one of them. The picture kept will remind me, whether the picture is mental or physically there it reminds the child of the good times before the fighting and the hate. She holds the hand that holds her down, she will rise above: I don't think the hand may nessicarilly physically hold her down but maybe more emotionally? She will rise above means she will get through it. *Chourus repaeats* The shades go down (x4): The child is either falling asleep or is blocking out the fighting. Personally whether you agree or disagree with me or not it's just mainly how you yourself interpret the song (I also think that's the reason there's no video for Daughter) and I would love to hear your opinion :) |
