Steely Dan – The Caves of Altamira Lyrics 10 years ago
I've always been mystified by the "When there wasn't even any Hollywood" line. Seems out of place. I suspect some double entendre, but then again I always suspect that with Becker and Fagen.

Steely Dan – Black Cow Lyrics 10 years ago
According to Fagen and Becker, the Big Black Cow was a chocolate milkshake at a place they frequented. One of them is so good it will screen out the sorrow, apparently.

Morphine – Like Swimming Lyrics 10 years ago
and for air you lift your head. haha. I wasn't thinking that before I read this but I will be now. All I know is it sounds sexy as hell.

Morphine – The Night Lyrics 10 years ago
I was going to say the same thing.

Morphine – Radar Lyrics 10 years ago
The line is "drop a bomb in my backyard"

I don't think there is any meaning to this song. I think Sandman wrote this so he could sing the word penetrate over and over.

Morphine – Empty Box Lyrics 10 years ago
This is the way that I also interpret it. I'd send that bitch the empty box back too.

One thing I considered was that his period of darkness and floating aimlessly caused him to look for some sort of help and although the box was empty, just the memory of that incident somehow gave him some peace.

Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics 10 years ago
The only line in the whole thing that sort of throws me off is the "Its a good thing they built a wall around you." My guess is the wall is metaphorical for the overprotective parents who don't wish to see their young daughter led astray. My problem with that is almost everything else in the song is not really metaphorical, it all seems quite literal. By the way, Mike Cooley is the shit.

Dr. John – Right Place, Wrong Time Lyrics 10 years ago
dead on. Dr. John put out an autobiography and several artists suggested different lines for this song. I think the right vein, wrong arm line must be his own as he was known to be a dope shooter for many years.

Neil Young – After the Gold Rush Lyrics 10 years ago
umm, wow. how much LSD have you taken? I like the interpretation, but its beyond far out.

Neil Young – Long May You Run Lyrics 10 years ago
well, I wouldn't say its OBVIOUSLY not about a car. Especially when you are the only one here who seems to think its so OBVIOUS.

Neil Young – Down By The River Lyrics 10 years ago
I like to think it is about Neil's dog. We all know how much dogs like to go for a ride. ("Its so hard for me staying here all alone when you could be taking me for a ride") And the dog gets old and he shoots her down by the river. Of course that doesn't jive with the middle verse about "Take my hand, I'll take your hand..." Oh well. I don't know what that part means.

Uncle Tupelo – Whiskey Bottle Lyrics 10 years ago
on another note, many southern towns will not sell alcohol on Sunday, so it could easily be a 3 hour drive out of the dry counties to where the booze is. Sunday is obviously reserved for Christian worship services, hence the "whiskey bottle over Jesus" line.

Uncle Tupelo – Before I Break Lyrics 10 years ago
The song speaks for itself. As a recovering alcoholic, I wonder what Jay Farrar's knowledge on the subject is. Is he or someone close to him a drunk? I just love the energy of this song, I get so pumped up listening to it.

Uncle Tupelo – Whiskey Bottle Lyrics 10 years ago
The problem with this site is that I can be mystified by what a song means for years and never think twice about looking outside of myself for an answer. When I finally do, it's usually some old Uncle Tupelo song that was released 20 years ago for which there's not any mass interest. Frequently, the comments on here are not "in reply to" anyone and if more folks used that, it might help interactions/discussions form into something more popular. I see it partly as a website failure but what the hell do I know?

This song makes me want to drink for all the wrong reasons. It makes it appear as if that escape is a solution, albeit not a permanent one. I haven't had a drink in 12 years and it once was a viable solution for my problems. THe song screams loneliness to me. ogami1972, you hit bottom when you stop digging, but I can relate to the feeling of having a band like this as a "companion on my way down"

Son Volt – Ten Second News Lyrics 10 years ago
But what is a ten second buzz? and why is it slower than news? WTF???

The line I like the most is the first part:

When you find what matters is what you feel,
It arrives, and it disappears.

I interpret that as some sort of epiphany that a person experiences that seems very important but as time goes on, the meaning dissipates. I have no idea what relates that idea to the rest of the song, but maybe Jay Farrar was setting an emotional backdrop for the rest of the story. His songs I think are meant to be impressionistic.

Son Volt – Route Lyrics 10 years ago
And the award for most mystifying Son Volt lyric I present to:

The rural route sleeps while the city bleeds, all over itself,
Over the falls in a barrel is where the answers have gone.

I suspect theres an autobiographical element to this, maybe it does have something to do with Uncle Tupelo's breakup.

Son Volt – Windfall Lyrics 10 years ago
I guess its about trying to get away from your own fears by doing something, just anything. The road is a popular metaphor, but what makes this song different to me is that there's an inner force in the narrator that "keeps you running" and "never seems to die" no matter what you do. So "may the wind take your troubles away." Pretty solid advice.

Metallica – Holier Than Thou Lyrics 10 years ago
It's gotta be about Dave Mustaine. He has a history with the band of talking shit since he was kicked out of the band before they got big. Go watch "Some Kind of Monster" the documentary where Metallica has a band therapist and they bring Dave in to chat. After succeeding with his own band Megadeth, selling millions of records, he is still a whiny and bitter person. The song has nothing to do with religion.

Steely Dan – Your Gold Teeth II Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't get the lyrics at all. I don't think anyone here has really sold me on their interpretations either.

Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics 11 years ago
I am astonished that anyone does not get a gay vibe from this song. "Studs that match your eyes" is undeniably gay. (not judging, just saying)

I too have always been mystified by the "high in the custerdome" lyric. Also the "heavy rollers" still confuses me a bit. I agree there are people the narrator does not want knowing about his little boytoy, but who are they? A recent Steely Dan tour was actually titled "Heavy Rollers" to make things more interesting.

Steely Dan – Aja Lyrics 11 years ago
"Chinese music" refers to China white. These guys were heavy dope users. The "hardware" being needles and drug paraphernalia. "They've got time to burn" is reference to not only the drugs themselves, but also the whole lifestyle. "When all my dime dancing is through, I run to you" (when I'm done wasting my time with alcohol/pot/pills, I go for the drug that really fries my circuits)

Nobody uses double meanings in their lyrics like Steely Dan. I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote some things just to throw people off. One things certain is that getting a straight answer from Becker or Fagen would be like getting a clear explanation from Bob Dylan. It just ain't going to happen.

Yes – Time and a Word Lyrics 11 years ago
Listen to the studio version and towards the end it kind of sounds like parts when they sing "the word is love" there is a backup vocal singing "the word is God" in harmony. It's subtle and not every time, but I swear I hear it. As far as the meaning of that, I'd say the words God and Love are interchangeable in many cases. Too bad so many of "God's" followers get hung up on the details, distracting from the real message. THE WORD IS LOVE.
