Rush – The Necromancer Lyrics | 10 years ago |
this song is very similar to 2112 in that it is used as a dagger to the critics. when this song was written, Rush was really close to being released from their record company because they did not like the style of music they were heading towards. they pushed the band to change and head in the other direction, write more simple lyrics, and not be so different. The Necromancer is about three travelers (from Willowdale, so obviously Geddy, Alex, and Neil) that approach a dark land ruled by the evil Necromancer. The Necromancer tries to capture them and bring them into his lair, like he does with everyone that intrudes onto his land. The Necromancer is meant to represent the record companies and media that urged them to change. In the song, they are going to be captured, but By-Tor saves them. This is meant to represent their music (by-tor and the snow dog). So, basically, their music and creativity saved them from being captured by evil. This was their way of saying "no" to the record companies when they pressured them to change. i think it's kinda funny that once "the wraith of the Necromancer soars away in the night" the dark lands are then turned bright. in other words, if it wasn't for the media and record companies, music would be much better off!! i want to see this and The Fountain of Lamneth performed live so badly. i know that will probably never happen, but as a 19 year old, one can only dream. |
Rush – Second Nature Lyrics | 10 years ago |
this song is NOT about politics. maybe it brings up politicians as an example, but the overall point is not that those higher powers are the ones that are at fault. Peart is saying that we, as people, don't know how to take responsibility and actually take action for our mistakes. We're all different, but we all have the same amount of responsibility for what's going wrong in our world. After all, this is where we live... we should probably appreciate our society as humans and make it as flawless as we can. we see the flaws and we acknowledge them, but we don't take actions ourselves. we let other people deal with it. we put things off and pretend things aren't happening. we blame others because it's the easy way out. we just keep riding the waves and think, "maybe soon these problems as a society will end," without actually doing anything. AND, while we think this way, we continue committing the problems and we stand up for change yet we don't actually change, ourselves! i feel like Neil was just venting with this song, kinda like i was just venting, myself. I love how he's able to put such a difficult subject into lyrics so clearly. |
Rush – The Fountain Of Lamneth Lyrics | 10 years ago |
this song is one of many Rush songs that makes you really think about your own life. It follows the journey through a man's life, starting from a child all the way until his death. When he was young, he dreamed of climbing that magical mountain to see the Fountain of Lamneth. But life, as it is, took him away from his dream and brought him into harsh reality and responsibility: being a teenager and facing adulthood, making a living (in this case, trying to survive on the open sea), and dealing with relationships. Finally, when he is an old man, he revisits his childhood and finally does climb the mountain. When he sees the fountain, he gets emotional because it represents his own real dreams and he realizes his whole life to that point was a series of selfish errors.. He finally did something in his life that he truly wanted to do; it was his dream to see that Fountain. "Many journeys end here but the secret's told the same: life is just a candle and a dream must give it flame." Peart is saying that you must go after your true dreams as a person, not your "dreams" that would benefit you the most (i.e. monetary desires, fame, etc.). the character in the song realizes that his whole life he was going for these "fake" desires and completely dismissing his childhood dream. to sum it up... a child's dreams are much more important to them than a grown man's desires. |
Rush – Bravest Face Lyrics | 10 years ago |
at first listen, it seems like it's just about how nothing is perfect. but it's actually about how nothing is exactly the way it seems. we must "put on our bravest face" because everything in life is an unknown; nothing is exactly as it appears. we must look at life for what it is and not what it appears to be. |
Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics | 13 years ago |
also, in one of the earlier songs when theyre talking about rabbits digging holes and getting away from the sun.... the dark side of the moon is always facing away from the sun. they are saying people are like rabbits that are just trying to get away from the good in life. |

has anyone else noticed that the word "lunatic" is used consistently in this song, and the title of the album is "Dark Side of the Moon"? the root word of lunatic is "luna", which means moon. in the song, he's saying that the lunatics are everywhere and everyone. so the album title is pretty much "Dark Side of People." that's assuming you've listened to the other songs that have a lot of meaning. for example, "Money" is all about how greedy and stupid people are. thats a dark side of a person. the last line of the album is "the sun is eclipsed by the moon". the sun represents all good in life, and that line is pretty much saying all good in life is unseen because the bad people in the world are covering it up. then, the voice at the end says "there is no dark side of the moon, matter of fact, it's all dark." in other words, everyone is bad. that was hard to fit all that explanation in that small paragraph, so i hope you can follow me. i listened to this album for the first time a few weeks ago, and i was confused what it was about until "Money" and "Brain Damage." the second i heard the word "lunatic", i was like MOON! |
