Animal Collective – Bat You'll Fly Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Also, the bird imagery almost strikes me as it symbolizing the malleable sexual/gender orientation of a child ... in other words I think when he says "the birds are calling for you, please don't follow" he's saying to the audience (a child) "don't end up queer" ... hint: Antony and the Johnsons' "I Am a Bird Now" ... Maybe I'm just gay and overanalyzing things. |
Animal Collective – Bat You'll Fly Lyrics | 13 years ago |
That this song follows "La Rapet" seems very significant in my eyes to the development of the dark fairy tale overarching the entire album. To quote "La Rapet": "the birds are calling for you, please don't follow" What follows is a song called "Bat You'll Fly". ... "I could've told you," (THE SECRET) "'Til we landed our way out," (FIGURE IT OUT) "I could've you, 'Til we literally found a better way out. "[May lay the doctor only gets what he wants, Say so give it to the preacher now..." (THE PHANTOM'S PATRIARCHAL ROLE) "Melody was hanging from the west wind damn all around, Your mother said your girl's drunk]" Avey Tare really is a lyrical genius, whether he knows what his own lyrics mean or not. ... lol |
Animal Collective – Daily Routine Lyrics | 13 years ago |
That's exactly what I hear, even when sober! |
Animal Collective – No More Runnin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about taking small steps. Yes, you want to accomplish goals and live out your dreams ("Daily Routine" and "Lion in a Coma" contrasted with "No More Runnin"); yes, you want to take your romantic relationship to the next level ("Bluish" contrasted with "Guys Eyes"); yes, you want to raise children already; but you have to do it in small steps or else your body will crash. One day at a time. It's important for your body and mind to relax; it's important to love and care for yourself. Placing "Brother Sport" after this song speaks to shy people and lazy people who relax more than they accomplish; that song tells them to open up and voice your opinions and do things. The whole album is seriously an archetypal Jungian type of journey. |
Animal Collective – Also Frightened Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this song is directed towards young people who undergo existential crises. The only remedy one can think of is to live as if you are in a lucid dream: to do whatever the hell you want. But this person also has compassion and morality and so does not want to live out their dreams of sex and aggression. This mental state of philosophical confusion breeds extreme anxiety and fear. So Animal Collective ask, "Are you also frightened?" In the end the label "dreamer" becomes offensive because it denotes someone who gets ideas but never does anything with them. It's healthier to channel your dreams through hobbies, art, careers, and romance. |
Animal Collective – Ahhh Good Country Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It sounds to me as if Animal Collective portray a shift from an indulgent kind of view on life and nature (possibly psychotic/manic) to a more practical, mature, independent view on it. It's metaphorical too: the way they perceive nature parallels their own personal growth as human beings. i thought our brother ?? it should be a leader who kept them all in green and red should not be allowed to be free This is the Brainstormer stanza. It speaks of the paradoxical forces which move our world: the red (war, violence) and the green (liberal peace). It's about Marxism done correctly; it could very well be about New World Order (the enforcement of equality upon the gullible to achieve world peace). The brother is the politician. The government has not tried to merge the political differences in America. This keeps people ignorantly separated and prejudiced; such people who do not promote peace should not be allowed freedom. cause this land of mine beats still the place would rise above us to tear your roots up out the earth and man-made fruits don't ?? This is the Theorizer stanza. Artists and bohemians who have plant-like personalities (potheads?) need to rise up and evoke change upon themselves. Stop dreaming and start doing. Continually get out of your comfort zone to grow as a person. ahhh good country seeds above us kiss this child and he'll surely wake up I don't care if I don't wake up you'll kiss me and I'll surely wake up This is the Dreamer stanza. At this point, the realization of one's dreams has occurred, yet his actions are still buried. He probably dreams of finding love, romantic or otherwise. He doesn't want to wake up yet; but if someone else enters his life, it will wake him up -- to be able to love and care for another person, one needs someone to give him love and affection first. ahhh good country trees above us mountain lions gonna surely wake up child won't fret if he does wake up you'll see me and we'll surely make up Now he stops dreaming and starts accomplishing the dreams (to become musicians and make art). "we'll surely make up" = apologize to others for having shown them such a weak, avoidant, indulgent personality. ahhh good country seeds below us kiss this child and he'll surely wake up don't you fret if I will wake up they'll see you then they'll surely make up Now he's ready to raise a child ("seeds below us") or accomplish his own will to help others. He has fully evolved from a hedonistic nature lover to an altruistic realm of transcendence. "they'll surely make up" = become a role model and others will follow your path. |
Animal Collective – Bad Crumbs Lyrics | 13 years ago |
In this track Animal Collective warns us to not spend too much leisure time; we'd never accomplish anything that way. It could have very well been written with the thought of marijuana in mind. But I think the keyword "crumbs" alludes to an impoverished lifestyle in general. When you are homeless or have only minimum wage, you are tempted to savor every last crumb that comes by you. And in such a lifestyle you don't have resources to accomplish anything; all you can do is try to survive. |
Guided by Voices – You're Not An Airplane Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"that never fields the game of choice" = accept fate rather than stress over decision making. |
Guided by Voices – You're Not An Airplane Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about an impending apocalypse. Once we learn the powers of "mind over matter", we are imbued with a beautiful responsibility to avoid today's ignorant society--or, perhaps as tempting, to unlock the minds of today's ignorant society. Robert Pollard warns us that technology is not going to aid us in the Final Battle. Becoming anthropomorphic--a hypothesis which would only become relevant in the notion of spirituality--may very well be the solution. Or the winners may watch the battle from a distance, and practice preaching philanthropy and Goodness to survive and help a few others survive. And the devoutly religious will learn to blissfully accept their deathly fate. |
Guided by Voices – I Am A Scientist Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about Scientology. Sure, it's about substance abuse, but it's also about pretty much anything involving a dilemma of "mind over matter". |
Guided by Voices – Demons Are Real Lyrics | 13 years ago |
And, basically, it's no longer about angels or demons. Humanity is acquiring a godlike intelligence that transcends the necessities of "angels" or "demons". These demons will not attack the intellectually blessed people. Animals are not what we think they are; they are reincarnations of people who regret their past lives. But they want to help us learn the concept of self-reliance--that's why black cats always stare at you from a distance, and cross your path whenever you are about to do something...clumsy (for lack of a better word). |
Guided by Voices – Demons Are Real Lyrics | 13 years ago |
My interpretation here is that the narrator appears to have made a pact with a ghost: a deceased person who regretted conforming to suppressive societal realities, and wished to explain to the living the real secret to immortality or world peace or something of that sort. Robert Pollard apparently had visions or beliefs about a New World Order, and expressed those visions using cryptic lyricism (theoretically, the ones who survive are the ones who can interpret these cryptic messages). |
Guided by Voices – Echos Myron Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the youthful = dreamers, intelligent but misunderstood people |
Guided by Voices – Echos Myron Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I interpret this song to be about the New World Order: a tragic apocalypse will occur in which the youthful shall prevail and those with a high social status shall fall down. |
