The song is about two lovers who want more out of life. One follows the other on a new venture, only to have second thoughts. Not thinking clearly, the lovers only see an escape route for one. Erica gets to escape and on her way out praises her lover by saying that she will spread word of his heroism. |

| The song may be a reference to someone selling his soul. He gets the fame and all that goes with it. He realizes that death is approaching and is worried that the buyer may not hold up his end of the deal by letting him die in peace. | |

Check out the stories about Martha and Mary. It seems to me that Sam is making direct references to these biblical sisters. Mary would sit on the floor listening to Jesus while Martha did chores. Mary was known for using perfumes. The girls were well off and lived in a big house that accommodated many. The sisters were not typical women and struggled to find their place in society. After Jesus left them, their brother Lazarus got very ill. The sisters called on Jesus to return. They waited for him for two days. Lazarus died in those two day and Jesus brought him back when he got there. Sam is just doing his thing of putting a unique twist to a bible story. You always have to keep in mind that Sam is one of those writers that admits to throwing in nonsense lines just cause they sound good. I don't think he intends for his lyrics to be overly dissected. The story is told from what would typically be Jesus's perspective...the narrator's role is morphed into that of one who visits the women, charms them, but is trying to avoid being bound to them. |
