Joni Mitchell – The Last Time I Saw Richard Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Incredible lyrics, But to me, what gets me is the very end.... I would listen to the whole song just for that Bm7 chord at the end. It's like "I'll leave, it's only a phase, I'll find love... maybe" |
Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is a spectacular work of poetry and music. I always took it as "You're giving me a hard time, but I can take it!" as in, despite the "constant as the northern star" arrogance and her "i'll be in the bar" cynicism, she can't shake him-she doesn't want to. As for Holy Wine? So many people in my experience have lived under the guise of religious fervor... but for whatever reason, they can't quit it. It's a very addictive relationship, an unusual worship of somebody/something that you don't necessarily need to be with. But she can't quit him, and is just fine with that for the moment, knowing that she'd better "be prepared to bleed" one way or another. It's convincing yourself of the benefits of an addictive relationship in the moment. To me, anyway. |
Indigo Girls – Prince Of Darkness Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I kind of feel like mle888 is pretty right. For me, anyway, going through the whole world of self injury (something I believe Amy did too, her songs seem indicative of it) this song was for me, the moment when I said, Ok I'm done being dark and depressed. It's the gift of choice to be happy or miserable, and Emily chose to be happy. Well, she inspired me to do the same. Love you, A&E! |
Annie Lennox – No More 'I Love Yous' Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Annie said in an interview on her Central Park DVD that this song to her is about the falseness and monotony of certain loves and that she's "over" the whole love scene, the way she interprets it. I love the original-- they're always great if AL wants to cover it! But I just really prefer her vocals and arrangement. The video, all that Tolouse LaTrec business in the video is representative of people's facades, and maybe eventaully finding a place that they can be real. You'll notice Annie FACILITATES this, but never gets to let her guise down. She's almost bitter, and she doesn't even want to try any more. What an incredible song!!!! |
Melissa Etheridge – My Lover Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is a really beautiful song, but I always viewed it as a total backhand. Breakdown was not a time in Melissa's life that she was writing love songs. In fact, when Julie heard the songs, she dared Melissa to write a love song-- Sleep. A beautiful song too, but this one is very interesting. Its Stockholm Syndrome to me--the lover conceals, disconnects, manipulates, has a thorny kiss, reads her like a prayer, makes her weak, strips her to desire... But yet she still loves her. Its the song about duality. For everything bad the lover does, she balances it with good. And, as always, the lover speaks about the monsters. :) |
Ash – Shining Light Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Annie Lennox's version is 10 times better, IMHO. |
Indigo Girls – Land of Canaan Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is the song my username comes from! I take it to mean that Amy has a relationship of some sort but the other half is out with someone else, hence the chorus. And she's not the promised land, meaning that she isnt going to sit around for 40 years while this person finds their way back to her. Just another song caused by heartbreak in a non-monogamous relationship... |
Melissa Etheridge – Shriner's Park Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Shriner's Park... This is one of my favorite songs of all time and Melissa's best work. I think that it might be about her first love, or first serious love/sexual experience, and the confusion she felt by her sexuality (Slip into the car/trying to make some sense). I haven't read her memoir in a while, but I know she had a pretty significant relationship at 17, referenced also in Fearless Love and Ain't it Heavy. It's possible that the girl she's writing to/about went into a mental hospital or a metaphorical prison in terms of a false lifestyle. I don't get the feeling that either of them are in a physical prison though... At any rate, it's a while later in her life, and Melissa is wondering what ever happened to that girl (Jamie might have been her name in the book, I think that's the one) and where she is now. Reminiscing. I went to a school named Shrine and so looking back at a first love at 17 in Shriner's Park always really hits home. |
Indigo Girls – Touch Me Fall Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Its such a beautiful song... I think the chorus "Touch me, I'm so beautiful" could be related a number of ways. Personally, I see it as saying, "Why won't anybody come around me? Why don't people love me? I'm ok aren't I? Are they hiding?" And sort of to say that now that I've fixed my problems, they said love would come to me (Emily song) so I did and there's still nothing! Its distressing anyway... It might MIGHT be a song about Self Harm... Blood and Fire, Keeper of my Heart, and Covered for You all pretty much straight up say that Amy used to deal with that. Thoughts? ~LS |
Brandi Carlile – Looking Out Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Well I'm not sure if it's a religious thing or a cheer up song to a distressed love interest, but my favorite line is "While you were looking for a landslide, I was looking out for you" Stevie Nicks-- The reflection on the snow covered hill until the landslide comes and erases you. While this person was looking for their own reflection and attempting self-preservation, Brandi (or whomever) was looking out for them. |
Brandi Carlile – Cannonball Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I definitely think its all about getting your hopes up and then being totally crushed. Bright lights sounds like maybe the relationship was for show-- but at the speaker's expense. She fell for someone who used her and abandoned her. Amy and Emily's harmonies can make me cry... Emily's are so subtle... <3 BC & IG |
Indigo Girls – Mystery Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i think that handed down or made by hand means either taking how you were raised to heart or growing into your own thing. or not even youthful, maybe its like, having a relationship dictate your life... |
Bob Dylan – Man in the Long Black Coat Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Now I don't know all the Dylan references, and I prefer Joan Osborne's cover from her album Relish, but this is an absolutley mesmerizing song. Line by line... Quiet. Darkness/night time. Drowning. Despair. Hung out to dry; left unattended, soft girl hanging. Window wide open, African trees Not sure... Everything's a total wreck. This is the world through the girl's eyes. Dead without notice. Unexpected. She didnt even write a suicide note. She's gone with death. I think this line is good ol' Dylan imagery. More imagery. She stared death in the face and he ask If she wanted to take a chance with it. Could be drugs...? She didnt recognize it as deadly. Not sure about the bible part... More imagery about death. At her funeral, The preacher condemned her flaws. What do you expect? It's only human. She was just trying to find some sense of self satisfaction. Its not easy to comprehend or retell, She gave herself to death Belief in fate Isnt that far off Life is futile. That's why she killed herself. I have no idea what the last stanza means... Either way great song. |
