If you've ever read or seen any of Bernie Taupin's and Elton John's interviews, they clearly state that this song is indeed about being away from one's loved ones. It's a song about the Space Race, since that was a huge deal during that time and a very popular subject. There were a lot of other songs written about the Space Race during this time with similarities in thematics, such as David Bowie's "Space Oddity". It has nothing to do with drugs. |
