Grey Daze – Holding You Lyrics

I think it’s about a breakup or the speaker not having his feelings reciprocated, and the speaker dealing with his broken heart by daydreaming that they’re together. The stand-out lyric ‘shaking my release’ is either about releasing his heartache feelings through the daydreaming or maybe it relates to fantasizing about this other person and getting off. |

The lyricist really should've checked with some translators, this song sounds like its about child sex abuse when it's probably not? although it also might be since it's about pain? |

Brooke Valentine – Girlfight Lyrics

The rap part of the song makes me uncomfortable.
This is a nice song, very catchy and motivating, but every line from the male vocalist ruins it. He turns a song about strong women being violent into a song about two women fighting over an unfaithful guy who boinked them both-- and this rapper comments on their breasts and hair for absolutely no reason, and it throws off the mood of the song how upbeatly he says his piece.
It makes me imagine two rival girl gangs meeting in an abandoned building or something to fight, and some dude drunkenly wandering in and loudly making rhymes about their breasts and how attractive they are, and none of the girls stopping to take notice of him because they're too busy pulling hair and kicking eachother's asses, and the man just won't leave and keeps standing there in the middle giggling and rhyming random things throughout the whole fight. The mental image is jarring to say the least. Cut out the rap part and the song is great. |

I think the song is about a teen who pushes others away and does drugs and alcohol to the point that it will kill them. The 'friend' referred to in the chorus is Death. |

One of the most polite and politically correct pop songs about wanting to have sex with someone I've ever heard, which is very nice, but the song is very awkward, especially being sung by John Sakars. |

Black Flag – Three Nights Lyrics

Just one interpretation but the opening lines and chorus make me think it could be about a crazy obsessive guy with an unrequited crush. He's jacking off in his bed and wishing that she returned his feelings, and he has murderous impulses not only toward her but for the guy she chose instead of him. |

Majical Cloudz – Childhood's End Lyrics

What I get from the lyrics--
When the speaker was a child his father was shot while out. The speaker feels like his childhood ended that day. The speaker hasn't accepted it and moved on; instead of crying and going through mourning, he stays in denial and waits for his father to return home. His father was the closest person to him and he still feels alone without him. |

This is obviously using imagery from the last supper, but it's about a guy who wants to sleep with a lady even though he knows she's a cheater and that he needs to put an end to their relationship once and for all. |

Delerium – Keyless Door Lyrics

This song seems to be a moment in time in the life of a lonely person who is overlooked. They spent all day at a bar hoping to find love only to end up getting drunk instead, and they're so tipsy and upset that they're having trouble getting their key into their car to go home alone (drunk driving is bad), so they stand there in the parking lot and begin to cry. |

Kongos – I'm Only Joking Lyrics

On the surface, the sinister, almost tribal sounding beat, combined with the vague lyrics and the line "only a crazy little thing I read", makes me think that this is a guy who knows the truth behind some mass conspiracy or secret but can't outright tell the person/people he's speaking to so he resorts to being cryptic.
What is the secret then? Unfortunately I'm getting a lot of heterosexual undertones with the non-chorus lyrics and it makes me think that the song is merely about the differences between men and women and courting. I wish this song were about more than that old thing. Would be better if the song were about society or something spooky, but after reading and re-reading the non-chorus lyrics I really do think it's just about sex.
"There is a song, you're trembling to its tune, at the request of the moon. Licking her chops, she looks at the lunatics. She needs another fix." A lady goes to a party/club/whatnot at night with the intention of picking up a guy. She's caught up in the MOONlight, the lunatics are men who are acting indecent and swarming her.
"Maybe the planets are trying to become the stars and we really came from Mars. The Earth is alive and man is a parasite, and heavenly bodies make us fight." Men are from Mars (and women are from Venus, you've heard this) and apparently they're sort of like parasites during the sex act. Men and women are different so they fight. Cheesy, right?
So the speaker then is someone who sees flirting and sex for what they are-- an ancient and primitive ritual that compels everybody to act weird without acknowledging how weird the whole thing is. The speaker too is a sexual being and asks himself, despite his self-awareness, why he does what he does ("Wadu-aidu-wadaidu").
Kinda boring after I figured this out to be honest. Still a good song though! |

Zella Day – Sweet Ophelia Lyrics

Obviously about a girl losing her virginity, and it's so puritan that it's almost intentionally creepy.
If the girl is too young, doesn't that make the boy too young also, assuming he's the same age? Yet he's portrayed here as manipulative and cunning, and her naive and careless. If she's younger than the boy, then the real problem here is statutory rape rather than the girl making choices too young. Also I think the chorus is about her bleeding after her first time, and about her breaking chastity before marriage vows. This song is a lot of icky. Too bad it's catchy. |

There's a lot of imagery pertaining to internet communication and computers so perhaps this is about a relationship that got so strained that it became long distance, skype and IM only, before fizzling out completely, or maybe it's simply about missing an internet friend that stopped logging in to all their stuff. |

So.. nobody? Nobody can figure out what this catchy song means? It's very confusing because on the one hand he's saying this lady has a lot of sex because she's troubled ("crying on the shoulders of the men") and needs saving... but on the other hand, he seems to want to get with her himself.

Bastille – The Draw Lyrics

|
I think this is about peer pressure/envy and feeling like you and your life are less good than other peoples' when really those other people are only pretending to have it better and also feel envious of others. The "draw" that's pulling the speaker back is these outside forces, these supposed "friends" of his, making him feel this way, when in fact he has plenty to be happy about in his life. |

Volbeat – A Moment Forever Lyrics

I'm not really sure what the lyrics mean but, from the words and images used, I get this story-- there was a lovey-dovey couple that frequently went dancing at a dance hall. They were killed shortly after and their ghosts still haunt the dance floor together, dancing eternally. The people that also frequented the place remember the couple and how in love they were, and sometimes see the couples' ghosts dancing.
I might be completely wrong. Catchy song though. I like how the guy sings. |

Roland Orzabal – snowdrop Lyrics

This album came out in 2001 but I only discovered this guy and bought this album recently. The sound is very well balanced and high quality sounding. This is my favorite off the album, Hey Andy! being my close second. Frankly the mood and lyrics sound kinda similar to Hey Andy! even though the beats certainly sound very different.
All this guy's lyrics seem to be almost purposely vague, but here's my interpretation of this one-- it's from the point of view of a gay guy, to his lover who is breaking up with him and going into the closet due to pressure from his homophobic religious community. The speaker is telling this guy that doing this is actually counter-productive to his soul's salvation. |

Evanescence – Breathe No More Lyrics

This song I think is about someone who has acted like someone that they're not for so long that they convinced themselves they were that someone. As their entire identity, life, and way of thinking has been built around this other kind of person, it's going to be like breaking themselves and then fixing every facet of who they are before they'll feel like their authentic self is being "reflected".
Finally being true to herself, she attempts to portray her true self to the world, but they don't accept it. They think her true self is sick, either they think this isn't her true self and she's mistaken or they simply don't like her true self and prefer her other persona. This person won't be fooled now though and realizes that they aren't the person that everybody sees them to be. Even if nobody else accepts who this person is inside, at least they will themself.
This song is available on the Elektra soundtrack fyi, this is not unreleased or only available via crappy live albums.
Even though it's not the lyricist's original intention, this song reminds me of someone who's asexual and only recently learned what that even is, and maybe the asexual person had been acting and pretending to be a heterosexual person because they'd always thought they were. |

Owl City – Deer In The Headlights Lyrics

Okay, I don't know if this was the lyricist's original intent, but this song sounds like it's about a stalker. The speaker/singer is an unreliable narrator, this dude approached a strange lady in a parking lot and started hitting on her, and when he wouldn't let up after she started to walk away he insisted she liked him back and began to stalk her on her way home so she pepper sprayed him in the eyes and beat him up. Even after she got away the guy continued to remember the interaction as a light-hearted and romantic misunderstanding and that she was only playing hard to get even though he was pressuring her in a parking lot and she punched him in the face.
I could also be completely wrong and be reading into things too literally, I dunno. Thoughts? |

Lana Del Rey – Put Me in a Movie Lyrics
|
Lana Del Rey romanticizes pedophilia and the book Lolita in a lot of her songs, this one being the most egregious case. This song is about an underage girl coming onto a grown man, no more no less. "Put me in a movie" probably alludes to suggesting they videotape it. Daddy, jump rope, sparkles, all imagery reminiscent of childhood. It's pretty fucked up how sexualized her naivety is in this.
Young girls (as well as boys) can't consent and if a child is hitting on you it's your job to turn them down. Studies suggest that kids that hit on adults have usually been sexually abused. Adults have way too much power over kids to be taking advantage of them like this.
Yeah the song is pretty and catchy and weird and expresses what it intended to, and creating a song about a thing doesn't always neccassarily mean you support the thing, but it's basically a song depicting a very innocent underage girl "asking for it" and it troubles me that NOBODY else in these comments is troubled by the content of the lyrics. |

Pretty sure this is a song about a huge nerd (of the tabletop rpg and trading card variety) seeing a guy at a club and lusting after him but he's playing hard to get. I initially thought it was simply about them hooking up until I realized she was saying "and a game, and a game" instead of "and I came" at the end.
Love this song. I love the nasally technical voice she uses in the chrous and the blatantness of the lyrics. |

Manchester Orchestra – 100 Dollars Lyrics

This feels like a breakup song. Before reading the comments here about the actual story behind the 100$ line, I'd have guessed the line alluded to the process of moving out of the house after a divorce and the guy's wife giving him 100$ dollars for a place to stay like a hotel until he got settled into his own house. The whole song has this feel like the tired yet relieved aftermath of a huge breakup. |
