Steven Wilson – Harmony Korine Lyrics 6 years ago
@[lookingglasspear:24385] i know steven wilson can sometimes be very bleak to the point where i am too naive to notice where other fans immediately key in to what he is saying, but i am not so sure that is the case here. It seems to me he is saying that you should only feel afraid to wait forever to do what you should have done when you were alive. thats the ONLY thing you should be afraid of (well not the only thing but for effect in this instance thats how ill phrase it) nothing in life should be scary because at least you dont have to wait forever like you do when you die. so dont wait, be afraid to wait, and do what you think youre meant to do now before its too late and you have to wait for a second chance that will never come.

@[Geissler:19112] i think ur misunderstanding the word host as someone who is having people at their house for dinner. it can also mean the recipient of a transplant hence they are the host to the new organ inside their body much like the owner of the house is a host to the people inside their house

Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics 8 years ago
The first time I heard this song I was having a bad acid trip. I thought I was in hell and all hope was lost until I heard the lyrics "just cause you feel it doesn't mean it's there" and it made me feel like someone was on my side and I began to feel a little better. When I moved to college I decided to research what other people thought the meaning of the song was because I wanted to hear if everyone else found it as positive as I did. I soon learned that while the meaning didn't correlate with my preconceived notion from before it still described the same existential crises I was experiencing at the time. And before I say this I want to clarify that I have always enjoyed radiohead and I think Thom York makes beautiful music. It's just that what's the point of listening to a song that basically tells you that you're fucked? I almost feel as though writing a beautiful song wasn't enough and he had to add an extra depressing layer to cater to his fans who must think it's cool to be hopeless. I get the artistic catharsis of circumscribing the things in your life you don't accept or may not have any control over and I understand the feeling that you don't know how to go about fixing any of it but this whole album seems to be full of only questions without even one answer indicating the first step towards solving any of them. It seems to be the gimmick most people in this vein of music (that's a broad generalization btw: basically anyone that appeals to the listeners emotions and then purposefully breaks their heart) And quite frankly, I find it sadistic. How could you get any pleasure out of conveying such a sad message to millions of people? It seems like every other song I hear nowadays is trying to get me to think about my ex girlfriend or something worse. I mean you'd think everyone on earth let the right one get away and is now single. Is there one song on the radio that talks about just having a good old fashioned crush on someone without likening it to the apocalypse? I mean chill out people! It's gonna be okay. But that's what sells because what people want is to be told is there's nothing they can do. It makes it easier for them to forget they have control over their lives and can actually change things. Like for instance a song that tells the listener that they messed up and will never get back the chance to fix things or some other melodramatic masochistic bullshit emotion the artist is feigning to be feeling themselves in the first place so they can make the listener feel vulnerable and suck them in by making them feel less alone. I mean misery loves company right? And Thom can say what he wants about Jim Morrison but I'll take "deliver me from reasons why you'd rather cry, I'd rather fly." Over "it was nice while it lasted but now it's gone." Or "you can scream you can shout there is no way out" any day. Like I said I like this music and people should be able to make whatever kind of art they want. But I think it's time for the human race to start taking initiative and responsibility for their own lives and demand content that reflects those beliefs. But you know that's just like, my opinion, man.

Nine Inch Nails – That's What I Get Lyrics 9 years ago
I don't think this song is about putting your faith in just anybody it's about the fact that the person you put it in wasn't as trustworthy as you'd like to believe and deep down you knew it. "Whys it come as a surprise to think that I was so naive" for me it's about a total loss of faith in humanity because of just one person that you really wanted to believe in more than anything, because that's what love is. All or nothing, and at least for me it's about accepting that maybe you don't know everything right out of the gate in life and you just have to admit you screwed up. Moving on and rethinking your criteria for a significant other so it doesn't happen again to you in the future (or me haha). Anyways it's not whiny if you take it in context instead of indulging in your own ability to separate yourself from other people's emotions. It may not ever hold as true for me as it does right now in my life, but hey that's kinda why I like it. It got me through one of the biggest obstacles I've ever had to overcome.

Radiohead – Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about how if you let them, everyone around you will make everything seem like your fault. After years of waiting nothing came(death) and when it finally did come he realized this was his life and no one else's so deep down inside something couldn't help but scream "if you're just going to try to brainwash me leave me the fuck alone I want to live my own life now so I can actually enjoy it" you're looking in the wrong place means your looking in the mirror to solve all you problems when that has never worked and may be the reason your packed like a sardine in rush hour traffic

Majical Cloudz – Childhood's End Lyrics 9 years ago
makes me think if my grandparents and how they made my childhood unbelievable. I mean i literally don't even think it happened sometimes. they're all oozing this golden radiance of sunshine. and i think this song is about how theres nothing sadder than losing that, but also on a personal note theres understanding that 2 plus 2 equals four but until you're sitting in a room with your grandfather and your dad and realize how each of them want to be young again like you you don't realize why. its because you haven't left that era of your life completely and you want to just shut up and stop complaining and enjoy it. while it last, so i think this song might be explaining life in terms of a process of decay that should be celebrated and revered. maybe you do but i don't want to be sitting in a room with my grandchild and be just realizing all of this stuff when i can't do anything about it. Who knows maybe the freedom i think i have both then and now is just an illusion but its one i want to explore because ever since then to me its like heroin

Chroma Key – Get Back in the Car Lyrics 9 years ago
I just watched a video of my late grandmother and my grandpa and my mom and my dad when they were still together a year before I was born. And it was surreal because my grandma died when I was 3 or 4 and I never really see any videos of her also my mom and dad were together and if you knew my mom and dad this video would be weird for you too. Anyway they're all down in the holler with the rest of my grandma and grandpas family in West Virginia celebrating Christmas. You can see that my grandma loves her whole family with all her heart and (me at least) want to just walk through the video and warn her that she's going to die of cancer in just a few years. She had cancer twice and I don't know if this was before the first time or not but I also know that she adored me wen she was alive so if it was I think that her leaving her sickness behind to enjoy her grandchild was an irrefutably good decision. This song (to me) is about how much love humans are capable of and how ironic it is because it's intangible and eventually washes away. To me it's a coincidence because It reminds me of the spirit of Christmas (although I don't believe in god) all of the memories I have of my family being together and being happy seem so much better because I was young and I didn't know any better. We all don't know any better and I think this song is saying to savor that while you still can because there's always gonna be more to know but it will only make those past memories even sweeter when you do. That's why I put this song on immediately after watching that video and I didn't even know it yet. Soon enough you will become apart of the naivety of the past so you might as well live the part and capitalize on your existence if not just in the name of the ones you love or once loved who aren't around anymore

Marilyn Manson – Great Big White World Lyrics 9 years ago
in reality nothing has color sop manson is saying that by accepting that things have color you are taking away their true colors. maybe he's saying that in his imagination he wished he could live in space where not much of anything matters but because his whole life he was taught that things like color exist even in his wildest fantasy he still can't escape reality and is burnt like a moth by the stars. a great bug white world reminds me of the idea that if you shed all of the ideas that you were taught and actually did whatever you wanted (which in my cue would by taking everything and destroying it) then the world would become your canvas. the second to last stanza reminds me that even though you may not believe in god you still may hope to some degree that there something outside of your power that can change your situation. the irony of it is that if it were the god that they taught you existed that was listen you might pray that he would die or never have existed at all so you pray like an insect or a parasite that is feeding off reality rather than being what you could have been if you were never jaded by these lies

Marilyn Manson – The Reflecting God Lyrics 9 years ago
and I'm sorry i have to post again because i don't think you can edit your post and nobody is gonna even agree with me on this but i said "that is to say after death" not because eternal life exists in life but just because I'm refusing to speculate because the song clearly isn't talking about that. the problem with this site is that people just run with these ideas too often so it prevents an real conversation. don't get me wrong song applying to your personal experiences isn't a bad thing and in fact i applaud you for exercising that part of you brain but in telling everyone on this site about it you're not respecting manson's (who himself said he does CARE what people think about him just not if they LIKE it) ability to make a song that says what it was meant to say. so I'm not trying to say don't give your honest opinion on a song or even an anecdote that helped you understand it. but just don't try to attach your own agenda to a work of art because idk about everyone else but i can see right through that shit and ill stop reading your fucking comment immediately

the same way you can't really tell an evoking anecdote about a shooting star you once saw to someone who wasn't there you cannot feel camaraderie with someone who did not suffer through the same things you have. for me it all comes down to the idea "oh thats so classic me" when you look back on your life no matter how good or bad you perceived something was at the time you still see yourself in every experience. thus creating an almost sociopathic intoxication with your own pain, or maybe just the idea of it is intoxicating enough to inspire you to create more memories

so she was alright but she can't come out tonight reminds me of someone who views a relationship in a certain way and won't ever settle for anything less. i think its talking about the fact that if you hold up your relationship to a certain standard the whole time you're in it you'll never have any fun. i think the singer realized this while the girl was sure there was someone out there who would share her morally sound stance on how life should be and although she's now in a manhole out of everyones sight its not like she was going to do anything with all that attention anyway. and who knows she may be happier with the idea theirs this perfect guy is down there for her than if she ever found him

i came here expecting everyone to have exploited my original thoughts on this song intot their own ideas but no one has so here goes: its about someone who fell in love with a conformist, and is stupid enough to believe he can save her. once he realizes this is impossible he is forced to cope with this fact. very similar to the beginning of the love story in 1984 except the author never gets to the point where he can be alone with her so instead of feeling like he has loved and lost the beginning also serves as an ending. also even if this is the case i dont feel right assuming that maynard is even comfortable writing his own explanation of the song in this many words so i also have to speculate that maybe this song serves as an example of how the widely accepted idea of unadulterated love is impossible and used as a tool used to control your mind and trap you into being distracted by someone who will never love you because they are also focused on this phantasmagoric fabrication and more comfortable with, and less aware of it than you will ever be

the part the scream of a butterfly ironically pertains to my life more than anyone else ive read on this site. its ironic because its obviously easy to get lost in these lyrics and i think they should be interpreted as black and white instead of how word choice affects the individual. anyways my late grandmother was obsessed with butterflies and i always think of that which is again ironic because this is a song about the after life, regardless i think the interpretation of it being "the last animal on earth you would expect to scream" (kodiak500) is correct because thats the conclusion i came to after coming to the conclusion that jim morrison did not know my grandma
