The song, “Ghetto Gospel” was written and sung by Tupac Shakur, which emulates Tupac’s life. This song also features Elton John as a contributing artist. This song discusses the brokenness and pain of this world with emphasis on the children growing up in what Tupac calls the “ghetto.” Tupac has a vision for a better tomorrow, which this music video demonstrates. The opening lyrics sung by Elton and Tupac say: Those who wish to follow me 2Pac: My ghetto gospel Elton John: I welcome with my hands And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold And peace to this young warrior without the sound of guns This opening statement says a lot about the aim of this song. To opening makes reference to life that Tupac lived. Tupac’s life serves as a positive role model for inner city children that struggle to survive the war on the streets as he did. The youth of today that live in low-income housing and high crime areas are not incent children but warriors or soldiers. These children have to become warriors to survive the everyday warfare that they are surrounded by do to the sin of humankind. Tupac is singing out for a change in this world; that there is another way to survive the streets with out getting rapped up in gangs, violence, and drugs of the “ghetto.” Tupac recognizes that there is higher power that can set the world free which is God. The people of this world do not have to be slaves to the sin of this world but they can walk free out of oppression by turning their lives over to the Lord. Now in the first chorus Tupac raps: If I could recollect before my hood dayz I�d sit and reminisce, nigga and bliss on the good dayz. I stop and stare at the younger, my heart goes to'em They tested, it was stress that they under. And nowadays, things changed Everyone�s ashamed of the youth cuz the truth looks strange And for me it�s reversed, we left em a world thats cursed, and it hurts Cuz any day they�ll push the button. And yall condemned like malcom x and uncle bob They died for nuthin. Dont let them get me teary, the world looks dreary But when you wipe your eyes you see it clearly. Theres no need for you to fear me. If you take the time to hear me, maybe you can learn to cheer me. It aint about black or white, cuz we�re human I hope you see the light before its ruined My ghetto gospel Tupac is calling attention to the oppression of living in an environment where the only future young children can see for themselves is a life of crime as a means to survive their environment. These young children are forced to grow up in a world that offers them violence and they are forced to handle unmoral situations and to make life changing decisions before they are mature enough to. The last two lines of the chorus really speaks to Tupac’s dream of a better world by the people of this nation coming together to fight the war of the streets. For, this world to be successful society needs to listen to one and another with open minds and hearts as Tupac highlights. That society should be less about condemning one and another and more about building bridges. In the second chorus Tupac raps: Tell me do you see that old lady, aint it sad Livin out a bag, plus she�s glad for the little things she has And over there there�s a lady, crack got her crazy. Guess who�s givin birth to a baby I don�t trip and let it fade me, from out of the fryin pan We jump into another form of slavery. Even now i get discouraged. Wonder if they take it all back will i still keep the courage I refuse to be a role model. I take hoes, keep control, drink out my old bottle. I make mistakes, but learn from everyone. And when its said and done, Ill bet this brother be a better one. If I�m upset, you don�t stress. Never forget, god hasn�t finished with me yet. I feel his hands on my brain. This segment speaks to the pain and tribulation that people in low-income areas that are high in violence are dealing with. Our country fights in wars overseas to prevent injustice from happening in other nations but our country does the bare minimum when it comes to the wars that are fought everyday in the streets of our own country. Must children become a product of their environment so it is the responsibly of society to provide a solution as Tupac is singing about. What is Tupac’s solution? Well, I believe that Tupac is calling for a world that is united by the true faith of God. For everyone to look after one and another as God calls his children to do. To proclaim the Word of God and teach the cultures of this world about their Father in heaven who has the power to mend the brokenness of their hearts and the brokenness of the world. |
