Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines Lyrics 8 years ago
What I meant by "rape culture" is a culture in which the victim is blamed. Yes, it's possible it may deter reports of rape but that was not the point. The point is when I crime is committed against a person and we first question what that person did to deserve it....blaming the victim, rather than the criminal. Here's a cut and paste definition from the net....

What is the “Rape Culture?”

Rape Culture is an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture. Rape culture is perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety.

Rape Culture affects every woman. The rape of one woman is a degradation, terror, and limitation to all women. Most women and girls limit their behavior because of the existence of rape. Most women and girls live in fear of rape. Men, in general, do not. That’s how rape functions as a powerful means by which the whole female population is held in a subordinate position to the whole male population, even though many men don’t rape, and many women are never victims of rape. This cycle of fear is the legacy of Rape Culture.
Examples of Rape Culture:

Blaming the victim (“She asked for it!”)
Trivializing sexual assault (“Boys will be boys!”)
Sexually explicit jokes
Tolerance of sexual harassment
Inflating false rape report statistics
Publicly scrutinizing a victim’s dress, mental state, motives, and history
Gratuitous gendered violence in movies and television
Defining “manhood” as dominant and sexually aggressive
Defining “womanhood” as submissive and sexually passive
Pressure on men to “score”
Pressure on women to not appear “cold”
Assuming only promiscuous women get raped
Assuming that men don’t get raped or that only “weak” men get raped
Refusing to take rape accusations seriously
Teaching women to avoid getting raped instead of teaching men not to rape

Shawn Mendes – Stitches Lyrics 8 years ago
The song is just about dealing with the pain of breaking up and the hurtful things that people say to each other but focusing on moving on. I love this kid's voice! I read he is a Canadian whose mom is English and his dad is Portuguese. His name reminds me of my daughter's friends with an Irish mom and a Latino dad because their first names are Irish and their last names are Latino.

Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out Lyrics 8 years ago
@[jonjonwinny:8299] Everybody has some stress throughout life but I prefer being older to being younger. I think life gets easier after you get out of school. Working is easier than school. I think too many people idolize their youth and forget how difficult it truly was. I'm in charge of me now and I don't need to ask my parents or my teachers for permission for anything. It does get better. Songs like this are coping mechanisms. I listened to C'est la Vie by Robbie Nevil in college to cope and now I'm the mother of a college student. School pressure is tough. In my opinion, it gets easier so hang in there!

This song is on a compilation CD in my car and it sticks in your head. It's about a woman who doesn't stay in relationships and leaves men wanting more. Her exes "haunt" her as in they won't go away because they want more of her but she's finished with them.

Nick Lowe – Cruel To Be Kind Lyrics 9 years ago
SweetCheeks2, a scenario of "cruel to be kind" would be that you're out in a club and see your best friend's partner passionately making out with someone else. You know that your friend is under the impression their relationship is monogamous. So keeping your mouth shut and minding your own business would be "kind" because you know this information would hurt your friend but telling your friend what you saw would be "cruel to be kind" because the information would hurt your friend but she or he would be aware of the truth and able to make an informed decision to stay with that person or not. If your friend decides not to stay he or she might find a partner who is more honest and they can negotiate a relationship that works for them both. In this way your "cruelty" of giving your friend the negative information would help them in the long run. You would be being "cruel to be kind" because you love your friend and are looking out for their best interest. Another example might be not starting a relationship with someone who's interested in you because you know you're not right for them and they deserve to be with a more appropriate person for them. It might hurt that person initially but it's better for them in the long run. In these examples, hurting someone is a way of caring for them and showing love to them. I would say that MOST "don't subscribe to it" because many prefer to stay uninvolved rather than be a messenger of bad news...or have that fling with someone who you know should not be with you [because you're selfish and attracted to them] then dump them once you've had your fun. I prefer to be honest up front. Even if it hurts someone temporarily, honesty is kinder in my opinion.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is a mother trying to get her son to be realistic and lower his expectations. She wants him to not try to be something or someone he's not and he'll find the right person for him. A simple man should find a simple woman [or another simple man if he prefers]. He should not try to change himself to fit into someone else's world nor should he try to get another person to change herself [or himself] to fit into his. She's saying be yourself and be patient and the right person will come along.

It's similar to the advice I give my daughter, except I don't tell her to be "simple" because she's not. I hope she is patient enough to find someone as spectacular as she is. No one should settle for less and no one should strive to be someone they are not....just to be in a relationship. There is someone for everyone....the right someone.

Paramore – Brick by Boring Brick Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about a woman who bases her life in reality, not fantasy. It may look like she lives a "fairy tale life" to outsiders but she built her life slowly through hard work and dedication, not luck or romance. She's "ripped the wings off of butterflies"....meaning she is no fool. She knows that to have the ideal life, being grounded and realistic is the way to go. When "her prince finally came to save her, it was a trick". The ONLY way to a stable life where your dreams come true is to "Build your home brick by boring brick". Exciting is fleeting. Flashy is short-lived. The TRUE prince is not a big talker but the man who will be by your side through thick and thin, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. You have to work together to build a stable life grounded in reality.

"Well make sure to build your home brick by boring brick
Or the wolf's gonna blow it down
Keep your feet on the ground
When your head's in the clouds"

Shallow promises mean nothing.
Actions speak louder than words.
"If it's not real
You can't hold it in your hand
You can't feel it with your heart
And I won't believe it
But if it's true
You can see it with your eyes
Oh, even in the dark
And that's where I want to be, yeah"

So she "buries" the fantasy and grounds her life firmly in reality....

"Go get your shovel
We'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle"

"Bury the castle" is to bury the fantasy because it's not real. It was never real.
There are some people who are unable to accept reality, no matter how many times it is presented to them....those hopeless romantics with a string of failed relationships because when the "newness" wears off they think the "magic" is gone and they keep searching for a "better match" rather than get to the reality which is that REAL relationships take work...for everybody. Some people are addicted to lust [to the excitement and novelty of a new person] and run from true love. No couple is together 20, 30, 50 years without learning to work through the difficult times. That is REALITY, not fantasy, but it's the ONLY way to make those Fairy Tales come true....for real.

shelley100, at my [now college-age] daughter's public grade school they had a separate class filled with all students who had ADHD, some medicated and some not. I wondered at first how that teacher would handle a classroom full of busy young people with shorter attention spans but she was awesome! She tailored the class to how those children learn and their activities were short, hands-on and very interesting....and they jumped from subject to subject to keep these students participating. Those children, given the correct learning environment for their specific needs, THRIVED. It was a beautiful sight to see! I have a girlfriend who chose to home-school her daughter who has Asperger Syndrome autism spectrum disorder. This student was very bright and would have benefited from a Gifted and Talented class but none were available at her rural Vermont public school. Now that child has matriculated back into public high school and is gearing up to get an Art scholarship to college. EVERY child has their particular "gift" and even the most severely impaired children have gifts for us to appreciate. Do not be discouraged. You are doing what is best for your child and you will see the benefits of your sacrifice and love for your child in the future. <3

My bad. 30 is generally the "magic age" in America when people are finished with schooling, established in their careers and settling down. I'm a couple decades past 30 but kids and marriage was a slice of heaven, not a death sentence....and surprisingly it still is. I'm sorry if that hasn't been your experience. LeAnn Rimes – Life Goes On Lyrics 10 years ago
"Baby shame on you, if you fool me once
Shame on me if you fool me twice"
The meaning of this song is basically if someone fooled you once they won't get a second chance- ever. The first time someone screws you over it is their fault for being a flake/tease/liar/cheat. You gave them the benefit of doubt, let them in and gave them a chance they did not deserve. When others warn you that someone is less than you, listen. If you let them in again, it would be your fault when they do it again... and they would because some people never grow up. They just grow old. You can sit back and watch them repeat the same mistakes over and over and over with new people....and be thankful you are not a part of it. They have not learned from their mistakes. They have not grown. But you have. Life goes on, you are stronger because of them and it is the other person's loss. This is a song of personal empowerment gained from pain and experience.

Dion – The Wanderer [From the Wanderers] Lyrics 10 years ago
This was a popular song in its time....a peppy dance song about a sad fellow who's not much of a catch because so many girls have already had a piece of him. He's been with lots of pretty girls but "they don't even know his name". He mentions living life "without a care" and he's going "nowhere".

To me, sad lyrics with a happy upbeat tempo are funny and can cheer you in their twisted dichotomy.....like the newer song "Man of Constant Sorrow" by Soggy Bottom Boys. You want to feel sorry for the subject of the lyrics but it's hilariously done so you just laugh. :)

I see this song as meaning that as you age life gets more complicated as you settle down but it's manageable. Stefani is in her 30s now and balancing work, marriage and parenthood but she can "get a hold on it" because she's a "rough and tough" girl. It can also mean because she's back with her original band instead of being a solo artist.

Get in line [get your ducks in a row or literally "get in line" like everyone else your age who is growing up] and settle down. You've hit your 30s so it's time to quit playing and settle down....the perfect time to get married and start a family. Grow up, settle down, make a commitment, get engaged to your girl [or guy], get married, buy a house, have a few kids, climb that corporate ladder, etc. Time to quit being a child [you had your time and now it's over] because you are definitely aging.... quit screwing around, get in line and settle down. :)

Frank Sinatra – Nothing in Common Lyrics 10 years ago
“Lust is easy, Love is hard, Like is the most important.” ~Carl Reiner

When you can't stand someone as a person, why start anything at all? A pretty face is not enough. It's easy to be turned on by someone's looks but if your core values are opposing, that person is only attractive until they open their mouth....or until you discover who they really are. If you could never be friends, you should never be lovers.

The bottom line is if you respect someone as a person and share solid values, you can get through the hard times but if nothing of value to you is within that person, it won't be long and they will turn you off, pretty face or not. This is why having *something* in common is so important [the more things in common, the better match] and how people who've been married for decades can still turn each other on...the attraction can be physical but it is also at a much deeper level. You don't have to be exactly the same. Traits can be complimentary but if traits are opposing, even casual sex is impossible because it's difficult to get turned on by someone you hate. And it's impossible to pretend there's a soul there once you've seen pure evil behind beautiful eyes. This song is a playful version of that scenario. "Waiter, separate checks."

kingsmalls, A.D.D. is attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity or impulsive symptoms. People with A.D.D. only have issues with staying focused and since they are less disruptive are much less likely to actually receive a diagnosis of ADHD. A.D.D. is a common term used among laypersons and also professionals when referring to those people.

Interesting interpretation except for stating ADD is an intellectual disability. ADHD or ADD is NOT an intellectual disability or disorder. I'm thinking you might have meant to say brain disorder. They are essentially wired directly. Intellectual disability is a below-average cognitive ability with three (3) characteristics:

1. Intelligent quotient (or I.Q.) is between 70-75 or below
2.Significant limitations in adaptive behaviors (the ability to adapt and carry on everyday life activities such as self-care, socializing, communicating, etc.)
3.The onset of the disability occurs before age 18.

Excellent! I don't know how many parents I've heard complain about their children who refuse to do homework yet ace their tests and they complain about how lazy and unmotivated their children are. Those are traits of a Gifted child. Schools without programs for Gifted & Talented children put gifted children who are exceptionally bright, yet learn differently, in with children who are average or overachievers and the gifted children are often in trouble for behavioral issues that are a result of boredom. They already comprehend the material and don't have the patience for the busy work while the other kids are catching up learning. Gifted kids who are identified, tested and put into classes with other gifted children, who learn the same way, can excel in academics because gifted and talented classes teach at their elevated level.

Fall Out Boy – Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner Lyrics 10 years ago
Many of the highest rated comments are very good interpretations but I will add that the Title "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner" is from the film "Dirty Dancing". This film very much plays into the lyrics because in the film the vacationing affluent teenager hooks up with the resort entertainment staff dancer and her upper middle class family would not approve of him so she keeps their relationship secret for much of the movie.

Spoiler: At the end they part ways because he is essentially "the help" while she is a recent high school graduate who will go to Mount Holyoke College, a prestigious private women's liberal arts college in the northeast, and has great plans to join the Peace Corps after college so to continue a relationship with this guy would be out of the question. He would be tying her down from her aspirations...He'd be the "locket around her throat weighing her down". Through much of the film he has a huge chip on his shoulder about being of a lower social class and that she would be embarrassed to be seen with him. He understands why but he does not like being her "dirty little secret".

I purchased "Dirty Dancing" and watched it with my teenager because she did not understand the Dirty Dancing reference in the more recent film "Crazy Stupid Love".

@Riversong5123, I don't have an agenda. This is a site discussing the meaning behind song lyrics. We obviously disagree on the meaning. I'm aware of Ebonics [and I'm not a fan] but there is a huge difference between calling a person a "bitch" versus referring to women as "bitches". Whether or not I'm a "prude" has no bearing on your argument whatsoever and attacking the person, rather than their point, is an ad hominem fallacy of logic. I'm going to refrain from judging you and leave it at we will have to agree to disagree on this particular song. As you said, this site is for posting one's opinion on a song meaning based on the lyrics and that is what I have done. I will say that I DO say what I mean and if I tell a man I am NOT interested in him, there is no "game" at play. When he continues to pursue me after I've made that abundantly clear, he is in denial . For him to continue in that same behavior, regardless of what I say, crosses over from a simple "come on" to harassment.

@Riversong5123 In a rape culture, the entire culture blames the victim. If a person is raped, the first thing done in a rape culture is to assume that the victim must have done something to contribute to the rape, such as asking "What was the victim wearing?" and the attitude that one's clothing or location contributes to the crime as if the victim "asked for it". It happens with many crimes. A most recent case in America is the teenage girl who was kidnapped after her mother and little brother were murdered by her abductor, the prevailing attitude in comments on the story was, "Something doesn't add up. The girl likely went willingly." The reason people tend to blame the victim is to distance themselves from the crime to feel safer. For example, if one can attribute the attack to the victim's behavior, clothing or location then that person will feel safer in trying to reason that it won't happen to them... because "I don't dress like that" or "walk alone at night" or "leave my car unlocked" or "go on the wrong side of town" or "give blurred lines [tease]"....fill in the blank. If someone is attracted to you, anything you do or say can be seen as reciprocating because that's what they WANT to see. The only time the American culture seems to avoid blaming the victim is if the victim is a child, elderly, deemed unattractive or male. When a male is raped by another male, no one asks what he was wearing.

This song is not misogynistic? Referring to a woman as "the hottest bitch" [radio edit is "hottest ho"]. "Let me be the one you bring that ass to" "Had a bitch, but she ain't bad as you" "I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two" "He don't smack that ass and pull your hair for you" "So I'm just watchin' and waitin'" [as in stalking a person with a partner who has zero interest in you] "I know you want it" [Not taking no for an answer] This song definitely objectifies a woman and refers to her in denigrating terms...animal, bitch, ho, ass. How would the singer be improving this woman's existence? Smacking that ass and pulling that hair doesn't sound like someone trying to dominate another? Fine, if you're a masochist but don't assume women automatically are. I'd dump any man who ever referred to me as a bitch, ho or "ass". And yes, it's still a great song but there's no denying that it is disrespectful to women in general. And WHERE is the dance floor coming from? There is no dance floor in the video or the song lyrics.

No one said the song is "about" rape but rather that it "contributes to our rape culture". That being one in which people, male and female, tend to blame the victim as he or she "wanted it". There are some people who absolutely refuse to take "no" for an answer and songs like this contribute to their fantasy that if they just keep trying, eventually she [or he] will realize that deep down she [or he] truly wants me.

I have been hit on, when out with my girlfriends, and told the guy that it was a Girls' Night Out with my friends and I am married and not interested. He replied, "Then why are you here?!" as if the only reason people go out is to hook up. That was obviously why HE goes out. Projection! We have even resorted to gay bars to avoid creepers! Gay men understand we are out to dance and have fun because they are not into us any more than we are into them.

This is a song is a catchy tune that contributes to our rape culture. It's about a man who is interested in a woman, already in a relationship, yet he is convinced that she's making a mistake and that deep-down she prefers to be with him. He also refers to her as an "animal", which is what he has reduced her to in his mind. This fella is projecting HIS desire onto her. He wants her so he sees anything and everything as a "sign" that she wants him. The creepiest line is "I know you want it". Rapists and pedophiles often use this line about their victims.."They wanted it." If someone says "No", take her or his word for it. The original video has beautiful young women in flesh-toned g-strings dancing around fully-clothed men. Men already have a physical advantage over women and this makes the young women seems even more vulnerable. I guess these guys aren't as confident or they'd even the playing field and be dancing naked too. Assuming someone wants you because you want them is INSANE. It would be like me saying the boys high school track team jogs topless because they want me ...or else why would they be sending me mixed messages. They are not sending messages at all. See how insane it sounds? Since the singer seems to be trying to convince her that she doesn't belong with the man she is with, it does not sound like she propositioned him then backed down....thus sending "blurred lines". It sounds more like he's living in fantasy land.

These are the Correct Lyrics...

I've been trying to make sense
I've been shouting under my breath
How's any of this in my interest?
When you sold me out
I must've not got the cheque

Your lust is a lie but it comes as no suprise
Time after time you coast right past the line
I do my best to,
To make amends with you
But I just can't see the end

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless with a capital R

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless and you're defenseless

Isn't it funny how
Those black clouds follow you around?
It's karma smiling down
Just let me know when it's in town

You act like the world owes you a favour
You want it all but you don't like the taste oh
You've been throwing bricks at my window
Like there's no better way to say 'hello'
Hello

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless with a capital R

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless and you're defenseless

The best you never had
The best you never had
The best you never had
The best you never had

I'm the devil on your shoulder
I'm the conscious in your mind

I'm the feeling that you
You cannot hide

I'm the devil on your shoulder
Telling you that love is blind
It's ok when it's hiding in disguise

Your loose lips let
Let words slide
You spend too much
Time talking about my life

Stories you will spin
Just for a power trip
It's safe to say that I am not into it

In the picture you are not
Someone else is in your spit
This is the result of people moving on

Good luck with killing time
You won't be killing mine
I'll do my best to always be on your mind

I never once said I didn't mean this
I can't wait to see how this one pans out

You are the first to question my achievemnets
But that's alright
My dreams I've been living

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless with a capital R

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless with a capital R

Don't hold your breath
I'm not losing sleep over you
I'm Mr Reckless and you're defenseless

The best you never had
The best you never had
The best you never had

Oh My Gosh, luizdelima, so wild that I found your comment today! I posted this songmeanings comment nearly two years ago but just today I was in a conversation with a psychology student about this very subject! I mentioned that life experiences and traumas may cause issues but mentally healthy people rarely suddenly "snap". Even with incredible stress or repressed anger, that person has to have a physical or chemical issue with the brain...either a genetic predisposition to mental illness and violence, set off when put in the right circumstances, or brain injury through head injury, stroke, tumor or drug use. The average person does not truly suddenly snap to the degree we see with premeditated [to the smallest detail] mass shootings like the Columbine High School massacre or the Batman premiere shooting. We were discussing whether those with antisocial personality disorder are "born" or "made". Then I found your post! Freaky coincidence!

To me this is one of the creepiest Purity Ring songs. Specifically the lyrics...

let it seep through your sockets and ears
into your precious ruptured skull
let it seep let it keep you from us
patiently heal you
patiently unreel you

It sounds like someone was abusive and obsessed with repeatedly hurting and harming so he was "healed" from his affliction by being murdered. The dead no longer obsess nor abuse others so he was permanently "cured" through death. The abuser's skull was ruptured and as the blood seeps out of his skull, his death will keep him from hurting them again.

My daughter begged me to listen to this song, read the lyrics and watch the video to give her my interpretation of the song meaning. Listening first with only the lyrics, I saw it as a woman being stalked, trying to get away from someone obsessed with her and finally giving in and saying sarcastically, "Why don't you just crawl into me and build a shrine?" After watching the video, it appears the man is obsessed with her [damaged himself with his intense obsession] then she in turn becomes obsessed with him and he feels better [perhaps vindicated?] but now SHE is damaged. Perhaps the message is that intense worshiping obsession is much more damaging to the obsessed than to the object of obsession? My daughter simply sees it as a sort of creepy love song....possibly equating intense love to a Pagan sacrifice ritual.

emmaroxy4, I actually read that in several articles after the Grammy Award and I could swear I've heard it both ways but this is an old comment so I can't be sure now. Here is a link to one of the sources that describe the lyrics change. http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/69464/Katy-Perry-Aims-Dig-At-Russell-Brand-During-Grammy-Performance

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 12 years ago
zackczar, the word you are looking for is "passive-aggressive" and it is NOT a tactic of a "psycho" gone "thermonuclear". In fact, of all the punishments a psycho can heap upon you for wanting them out of your life, the "silent treatment" would be a blessing. A "psycho" does not take no for an answer, convinces his or her friends that you are truly in love with him or her then stalks you by cyberstalking, repeatedly calling and hanging up, having a surveillance van outside of your house, following you and your family, and damaging your property. There is no real "violence" there but constant harassment. It is not passive-aggressive but truly aggressive. There is only ONE reason why a couple who have broken up should ever be in each others' lives afterward and that is if they share a child. If they share a child, they will be co-parents throughout the child's life.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 12 years ago
The plucky music is addictive and I love the Peter Gabriel-sounding voice!! So many awesome reviews on this song already. Simply, she is tired of the way he repeatedly "screwed her over" and breaks up with him, he claims he's happy with that but in reality, he's still hung up on her or he would not care that she wants to move on with a clean break. She changed her number, which he would not even know if he hadn't been calling her. If he truly wanted the break-up, he should let her go. It also sounds like he was hung up on someone else [during their relationship] which drove her nuts so she finally stopped the torture of someone leading her on and constantly comparing her to the one who got away. Seems like an ego thing. He "doesn't even need her love but cutting him off feels so rough". Why care? Some people like to keep a collection of exes on hand. Every time I hear this, I think she's tired of his head games and "having to read into every word he says" so she blocked his future booty calls [and any opportunity to string her along further] by cutting him off and he doesn't like that one little bit.

Mika – Lollipop Lyrics 12 years ago
I heard this song on a children's dance routine video and had to find it. My teenager said it's been on her iPod for a while. I can't quit listening to it. This and Mika's "Love Today" both sound as if they were written decades ago. I think "Lollipop" is a suggestion not to obsess on love too much and not to be in such a hurry or love will get you down.

Katy Perry – Part of Me Lyrics 12 years ago
It's "bombs and blows". The other version also says "So you can keep the diamond ring. It don't mean nothing anyway" instead of "You can keep the dog for me. I never liked him anyway".

The song meaning is pretty self-explanatory....she dealt with an emotionally abusive man but he did not break her soul and he never will.

OK Go – Needing/Getting Lyrics 12 years ago
The new video music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet, that was introduced in a super bowl commercial for the Chevy Sonic...is AWESOME! So much effort went into it and the music turned out excellent. This is a great song too...the lyrics being about the futility of trying to forget a girl you love. Not only useless but "there ain't much that's dumber". Well done, Ok Go!!

Eels – Flyswatter Lyrics 12 years ago
This is, by far, my favorite Eels song at the moment. Novocaine for the Soul is awesome too but what I love about the Eels is how so many of their songs have a lullaby/music box innocent sound to them yet have dark lyrics. I agree with Appers66 that the song is about not being bothered by life's annoyances but the video is amazing. There is so much going on, like people not being who they seem...the "nun" turns surfer girl when no one is looking and another "nun" is a skateboarder. The lead singer calls the police about the clown in the surveillance van [who turns out to be literally a clown] while the cop just skips through the woods chasing bubbles and playing with flowers. I see it as symbolic of how in life you're "on your own" with your problems but you can get through the day by facing each annoyance as it comes- using ice water and a flyswatter as means to take back control of your life and rid your life of problems. The field mice living under the house "don't eat much and have a tough life for a mouse" meaning those [who are a minor annoyance to you] are living sad lives trying to live off the scraps in your life. It is also such a pleasure whenever there is modern music where you can actually understand the lyrics just from listening. I find the Eels' music very addictive! On one YouTube video someone commented this song would make a great music box tune and I agree!

Eels – Trouble With Dreams Lyrics 12 years ago
"Trouble with dreams is they don't come true
And when they do they can't catch up to you"

The lyrics SHOULD read "And when they do they COULD catch up to you".

Those are the lyrics that *I* hear when playing this song. It changes the meaning of the song. Dreams coming true "catching up to you" sounds like your dreams coming true might be a bad thing....or at least more than you are prepared for. Maybe more than you can handle since he says he's "got an awful lot of big dreams".

Eels – I Like The Way This Is Going Lyrics 12 years ago
This song, in my opinion, is about that "honeymoon" stage of a relationship where the other person seems so perfect that even watching TV with them is enough. And in long-term relationships, couples go in and out of this phase. When you're in it, your partner seems perfect, the entire world seems perfect, you are blissfully happy and all is right with the world. Many of the Eels songs have a dreamy quality to them, like they could be lullabies. Just beautiful.
