Amy Winehouse – Stronger Than Me Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think people have got this wrong. Sensitive men are fine. Sensitive women are fine too. You do need that quality to an extent in order for a relationship to be successful and for the other person to feel understood and listened to. But I don't think that's what this song is about, nor is ultimately about gender and wanting a man to play the typical macho role. It's about the frustration that comes when your partner is so consumed in themselves and their own lives that they neglect you and become dependent. You become less of a girl/boyfriend and more like a mother. "You always wanna talk it through - I don't care! I always have to comfort you when I'm there But that's what I need you to do - stroke my hair!" First line I think is an expression of her being so frustrated and irritaed with always having to listen to her partner's problems constantly. The next two lines I think are about her frustration that, whilst she's there to take care of him, he can't even be bothered to return the gesture. "Why'd you always put me in control? All I need is for my man to live up to his role," She's sick of taking the lead and being the one that provides direction in the relationship, which is fair enough. The other person has to pull their weight too. "Always wanna talk it through- I'm ok, Always have to comfort you every day, But that's what I need you to do - are you gay?" She's tired of talking, tired of being emotional, she's at the end of her line. She needs someone to support her too. I think the last line here let's the song down though, it's not very sophisticated and is insulting. "I'm not gonna meet your mother anytime I just wanna grip your body over mine" She wants a boyfriend and passion, not emotional humdrum. That's my take on the song. Sensitive partners are fine, but partners that become so absorbed in their own issues that they fail to return the support aren't. |
