I'm not really sure what to make of this song. I enjoy the intro more than the actual singing part of the song. I've always been a fan of guitars despite I don't actually play one myself. After reading the previous comments, I believe there is some sort of sexual meaning behind the lyrics as Mark refers to them "get on down." However, these are just innunedos and there is no explicit parts of the song that actually says they are doing naughty things :P I guess it's one of those songs where you have to make your own mind up about it and that there's more than one way you can take the lyrics ;) |

A really great song and very cleverly written. Obviously a tribute to Elvis after he passed away. I love how there's a lot of playing on words where Elvis's song titles are used. For example: "let me leave my number - heartbreak hotel oh love me tender - baby dob't be cruel return to sender - treat me like a fool" Only a great God like Mark Knopfler could pull this off. I've always seen Mark as great as Elvis and his songs are very powerful too. I just wish that Mark was more well known because he such a brilliant singer but he's just not regonized enough by todays society :( |

This song is a really sad song but one of Knopfler's best : ) To me, it's about someone who has having a long distance relationship and is tired of making out on the phone because they never see each other. I've been in similiar situations myself where my boyfriend has been a long way away from me and all we can do is talk over MSN or phone and they don't understand, "I get so tired when I have to explain, when you're so far away from me." This is actually very true because you cannot say in person what you really mean, there's a big different from meeting someone in person to talking over a line. "I'm tired of being in love and being all alone When you're so far away from me I'm tired of making out on the telephone And you're so far away from me" This is a particularly moving verse because you love this person a lot and you're alone because they live somewhere else. When Mark sings, "See you've been in the sun and I've been in the rain" it really shows how far they are away from each other :( Depressing song, I must admit. |

I think this is probably my favourite song by Mark Knopfler and I've spent many happy hours listening to this song. What I currently make of it is quite confusing as I'm not entirely sure what the song means to me but I'm going to give it a go. I'm also uninfluenced by others as this song has never had anything written about it :P I think it's about how life changes and sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad but you should always enjoy the good times "before we say good bye" and "it all goes wrong". It also refers to how relationships change and even who your relationship is with changes. If you've seen the music video to this song then you'll have a deeper understanding of what Mark meant when he wrote this song (you can find the song on any popular video viewing sites). "Everything can change In the blink of an eye" This is another example of how things can change very quickly without you really noticing until you step back and look at it. |

I personally really like Mark Knopfler and think he is a very talented singer + musician. I feel the song is very much about the "sod life" attitude and about life is too short to care about what happens. "I don't care if my liver is hanging by a thread don't care if my doctor says I ought to be dead." The meaning is that why should we care about consequences. We're all going to die someday, at least die happy doing the things you wanted to do and enjoying yourself. That's personally how I see this song, your opinion may vary :P |
