Big D and the Kids Table – 175 Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe this song is beautiful imagery backdropping dave's philosophies on how he lives his life. "175 gram of disc" seems to me to be a prop symbolizing life and its weight (dave [as well as many artists] uses circular devices to capture the essence of life's never-ending cycle like a circle has no beginning or end). The disc is like holding your life and its worries and purpose/goals in your hands and tossing it the most accurate you can without worry; as in the disc that seems to float on the air and him and his friends killing time everywhere they go.
I also view the lines,The wind may blow
"The snow may fall
We're playing disc
Late into the fall
And the winter
I just met her
Hardly know her
Wanna make out with her
Again"

-to describe the bitterness of the world
that is forced onto us by ebb and flow.
They go with it head on against the world in its pitfalls and hang-ups
by defying weather keeping him from leaving grants apartment in the winter and fall (late). He also doesn't "know this girl" very well but he would rather go for it and have fun than hold up. And, then he say "again" after the thought to create the implication that he can't even wait long enough to think about it; it's already done.

Last of all, my favorite opinion on the lyrics is within the lines,
"I need another beer
It seems I've drank the twelve ounces of the one I have right here
Stop the van, Dan
We need to piss
We need to
It's our, our dying wish"

-another example of drunkenly stumbling through life's ebb and flow (beer and piss, in this case); and putting a weight to it. It's like he's saying he's going to piss away his time with his friends ("it's our dying wish").

A very lighthearted, fun, energetic, enthusiastic account of taking on the world the best you can,
"Yeah, grams of disc."

The Hold Steady – Chips Ahoy! Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with elstongunnn on here (except all the cookie analogies). She uses painkillers but they make it worse. She has all this money that buys her a materialistic high, but she never gets the paralell high (enjoyment-which is what high implies). She makes him want her with her looks, money, and sex. However, she never feels fulfilled with her. they both are not getting what they think they are getting.

Shook Ones – For Collards Lyrics 14 years ago
Collards are widely considered to be healthy foods, collards are good source of soluble fiber and contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties, such as diindolylmethane and sulforaphane.

I think his father was dying of cancer. On Independence day he was given the news that his dad was terminal (the independence day passage, i think, is present tense. It is him hearing a song that reminds him and saddens him with memory). Collards were probably suggested to his father to eat. This probably helped him live longer than antisipated. October is when his father died. I can infer this because "I knew October was sweet like anti-freeze." is and ironic statement that exposes that october was sweet because it was extra time spent with his father, however, is not sweet (anti-freeaze is not sweet) because it is when his father died.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Independence Day, and I know it
when the song that's playing is just so damn sad.

--(its independense day [presently] and he is reminded of his fathers encounter with cancer and death via a song on the radio.)

I'm growing up, I'm growing up in front of you.

--(he's growing up by experiencing his fathers death. He spends this time with his father before his father dies. Hos father witnesses him growing up.)

Holding you knowing that there's nothing more that I can do.

--(self-explanitory)

When Mississippi rang I should've stayed citing

--(Missisippi is where his father was living. At the time he was probably touring with shook ones and got a phone call telling him that his father was terminal.)

I wanted one more week with you.

--(He transported himself to missippi to give his father company.)

I knew October was sweet like anti-freeze.

--(Foreshadowing-explained above.)

I think I see your light around that door. But I can't show it.

--(He knows his father is going to die soon but can't show the sadness on his face because he is with his father.)

I'm growing up, I'm growing up in front of you.
Having 12 years of my heart to answer to.

--(he might have had a bad relationship with his father and not visited for 12 years. he has that void now.)

The corner of your eye is what I want to see when I get home.

--(when he comes home he is scared that his father will be dead)

The neighbours said "no" but I said "he's so old".

--(He came home and the neighbors told him that his father had died. he couldn't handle it. he had to try to give himself closure)

We're lucky that they're all in bed by nine,
cause in the quarter turn of Earth's rotation we gained another year.

--i have know idea the motivation of this sentence. I think it is an exageration of how much time he feels he added to his fathers life. Or how much fulfillment he felt. not in a sadistic way, but closurefull.

Going down old stairs, old stairs.
Middle of morning I walk them.
Then out the car as we push off.
Out to behind her childhood home.
Glasses off my nose - they're sliding.
Marked with a brick and stick from the yard.

--(getting the casket out of the hurse and burying his father behind his mothers childhood home.)

Shook Ones – Ebb and Flow Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe he does not want to take on the responsabilities of growing up: getting a shitty job that is respected, getting married when it is the right time, having children at the right time, the stess of being seen as achieving.

bird=him. wind=stressing to achieve success in the eyes of his peers and critics. Flock=The majority of people that do live life working their hardest, breaking bones, just to do the respected thing at the respected time. letting the winds have their way=let those things happen when they happen. lets not be worried by time and respect. You shouldn't have to fight a pace to achieve hapiness and fulfilment.

i wish she'd say no. = his girlfriend most likely (,but could be anyone). Just someone that wants that lifestyle. Maybe a girlfriend that wants to get married just because of their accumilated time together as a couple, or even a baby.

Ebb and flow means to waver back and forth from good state to bad state of something. Therefore, he is most likely saying that there will always be good and bad moments in life. No matter how hard you try to make it all good moments.

Modest Mouse – 3 Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters Lyrics 14 years ago
Tongue tip tied to the roof of my mouth
(Bad naughty little angels come rushing out)

-people talk about heaven and almighty. He has something to say, but he knows it will offend the people. In the end, however, he can't help it and discloses his doubts. The bad naughty little angles are hard truths like; lack of reason for faith, or closure to death. These angles are bad and naughty because most people don't want them, but they can save you from investing your life in a hope that something exists that most likely doesn't.

I guess you guessed that I'd catch hell
(I just caught a cold but now I'm feeling well)

-The people that he diclosed his doubts to where defensive of their belief and told him that hell would come to him. Yet, hell did not come.

I don't know but I been told
(You never die and you'll never grow old)

-His doubts are explained here. He cannot be certain that there is a heaven that will enable him to live forever in hapiness.

You said, "I hope you live forever"
(Don't you wish that on me
You said, "Don't be clever")

-the religious person sticks to his guns and wishes Isaac the ability to live forever in heaven even though he has doubts. However, Isaac then discloses that he does not want to live forever. The religious person then becomes defensive again and dismisses isaac's confession as a hope to be clever.

Looked like we were photographed
(At gunpoint, so I had to laugh)

-We are stuck in fear of death. That cannot be a reason to devote your life to a stuctured faith.

It's the big show, it's the big show

Three inch horses watching them drown
In the tar pit we're kneeling down

They see us talking out both sides of our mouthes
Two faced monsters

-the big show refers the performances people give when they need to hide their own doubts in their religious beliefs. The truth is, most religious people do have doubts. Isaac doesn't want to hide his doubts.

-Three inch horses is an oxymoron that is a symbol of faith. A horse is big and noble and beautiful. However these horses are only three inches tall. There may be some faith you have within you, but it is not as gigantic as you make it out to be. As well, when confronted, the faith drowns slowly: like in tar. We drown: wasting our time praying.

-Everyone can see religious people agrandizing their belief, then asking themselves doubtful questions. Their faith sees both the believable and unbelievable (two faces).
